Ashok kumar is a institutions of Bollywood. Excellent actor and his pronunciation was very rich and clear. He was multi- talented educated person. Very good singer, very giod painter and a very good homeopathy doctor. I heard that he used to spend a lot of time visiting patients before going to the shooting. However, in my opinion, he was not properly evaluated. Thanks rahoul for this post..god bless you

On one hand, much was talked about Dilip kumar and very little of Ashok kumar, on the other hand, Ashok kumar was reduced to a caricature by mimicry artists in 90s and thereafter... it used to make me upset because i was totally in love with him... i still remember watching his act in film Mahal and being captivated by his mesmerising eyes, the tilt of his eyebrow, the amusement in his smile..... i have always wanted to meet him.... even Dilip kumar, in his autobiography, has dedicated a complete chapter to Ashok kumar.... even now i keep watching any B n W film of his that i can get my hands on....my favourite Ashok kumar pair is with Nalini jaywant and Meena kumari....

Wow..What an incident you have thrown light on. Most of us from the 70s remember Ashok Kumar as a character artist, and mostly remember him in tele serials like Humlog & Ramayana where he used to speak at the end of each epusode. He waa a superstar during his time. 1950 was a time where India was taking baby steps after independence. People had limited source of entertainment and bollywood was the only option for the masses. The politicians were also new in their fields, hence they could not think about the grey character that Ashok Kumar played in Sangram and so they decided to ban the movie so that the moral and the thought process of the masses does not get affected in the wrong manner. I would say that all, the government, the movie makers alongwith Ashok kumar were right in their own way. History will remember this one incident this film Sangram was withdrawn from cinemas after going house full for 16 weeks in a row. Loved this interesting podcast Rahoul... Awaiting the next one 🙂

Hi Rahoul , I can relate to everything you said in this episode. My admiration for Ashok Kumar has gone up today because he poked his fingers in the eyes of authority esp. when it comes to Morarji Desai, the Home Minister of Bombay, who had a bee in his bonnet when it came to social probity and even when it didn't. I haven't seen SANGRAM(1950) but this will be an incentive for me to watch it. I then will form my own judgement if Ashok Kumar and his film needed to be censured (not censored) by Morarji Desai's government I have a big problem when Big Brother interferes with society, especially in India, where they always seem to set their goons loose on films that they don't like, even when it contains nothing objectionable. I saw AANDHI(1975) a couple of days ago - i felt it was time I saw it again, because the last time I saw it was a very long time ago. I don't know what Indira Gandhi found objectionable about it. So what if it centered on her life, but it portrayed her in a positive light. What was the need to overreact? Your'e right, I never knew Ashok Kumar as a matinee idol - only as a very good character actor, but character actors in the old days used to be very good, anyway. Thank you sir.

Ashok Kumar was not just a character artist, he was the biggest superstar of India right from late 1930s to early 1950s, after that the trio of Raj-Dilip-Dev made it big in Hindi cinema. Ashok Kumar was senior to them, and his career spanned 60 years with over 300 films. 'Achhut Kanya' (1936) was his first hit. He played leading hero roles from 1936 to 1960. In fact, he was the highest paid actor of India in 1940s. He was probably the biggest filmstar of pre-independent India. 'Bandhan', 'Jhoola', 'Naya Sansar', 'Kismet', 'Najma', 'Mahal' , 'Sangram', 'Samadhi', 'Afsana' , 'Parineeta', 'Howrah Bridge', 'Ek Saal', etc., are his big hits as leading hero. From 1960s onwards, he started playing character roles. He played all kinds of characters, whether positive or negative. His character in 'Kanoon' also had grey shades, and he also played a surprise villain in 'Jewel Thief'. 'Aashirwaad' was his best performance ever, which won him both Filmfare & National awards for best actor. He brought many new talents in the film industry. He was a multitalented man. Not just a great actor, but he was also a classically trained singer. He had a great knowledge of medicines and astrology, together with being a great painter. Padma Bhushan & Dadasahab Phalke Award winner.

Sangram (1950) Hi Rahoul, I had promised that I would view SANGRAM(1950) and decide for myself why Home Minister Morarji Desai regarded this movie like a pebble in his shoe and whether it was an over-reaction. Lawrence ----- SANGRAM(1950) has the look of a noir film. I thought that I might have to psych myself to watch a Hindi film this old, but other than an old b/w print, it was an easy watch. This 72yo film puts some modern Bollywood films to shame. It’s a crime drama, which when combined with its age (especially its b/w color and certain quirks, might lead some people to suspect that it’s a noir film, and, more relevantly, that it’s an Indian noir film. That would have been a feather in its cap and would have enhanced its reputation, but, not all crime films are noir (French noir==black or dark) but it would have been nice if this one was, because Ashok Kumar plays a dapper, suave antihero. It’s the first time that I’m seeing AK as a hero, and not as a character actor, and he is good. He is charming, suave, debonair, who is shown two-timing two women, and frolicking with one - Nalini Jaywant - in a swimsuit, while the two are tubing on a lake. Tubing in 1950 in India!- whoever heard of such a thing! Usually old films depict poverty, hunger, misery. One of the women has on a pair of sharkskin slacks and blouse - an outfit that you’d see today. There’s a train fight appears like it could be happening in a film today. Ashok Kumar is not the usual “dudh ka dhoola hua“ hero, he is a hero who has gone “off the tracks”. Rajesh..Raju beta…yeh galti nahin yeh sangheen zurm hai…yeh tum ne kya kiya? … Kya wajah hai, kaun si aisi cheez thi, jisne tujhe is zurm par amada kiya?” That’s the type of dialogue you get. And no wailing or railing, no beating the breast, no over-sentimentality. It’s a fine example of sophisticated film making! As I keep watching in fascination, I have two thoughts in my mind, a) what is it that got the government so riled up about it, and b) why doesn’t Hindi Cinema make such films anymore? I had a similar reaction to KALA BAZAAR(1960). What happened to India and to Indian films? We have become a nation of cry babies and our films depict no imagination. They are cookie-cutter masala films. There were one or two (crime) films worthy of being compared to this film, KALA BAZAAR (1960) and GUNGA JAMUNA (1961). This movie was a box-office success with our parents and grandparents even though the film’s hero is an anti-hero. That’s the type of risk film-makers used to take in those days. Nowadays, film-makers lament that if they put this, or take that out, the audience will not like it. Rahoul is right. An antihero is a central character who lacks the characteristics an audience associates with a conventional hero. Antiheroes are ambiguous protagonists-complex characters who have a dark side. The government perhaps didn’t like the janta appreciating and liking antiheroes. They didn’t want independent thinkers in a newly freed nation that would question the official policy line. So, they banned the film, and in the process created a nation of conformists who toe the establishment line. I commend Ashok Kumar for having the gumption to play such a controversial character at the height of his popularity. This attribute is missing in our present day actors, who give in to societal pressure. There was one exception, Rajesh Khanna, in ITTEFAQ(1969). The climax of this film is a long drawn-out affair. I couldn’t predict how it would end. I don’t know if the last scene was forced on the film, as a pre-condition for releasing it. (Thank you, Rahoul for recommending the film.)
@himanshupathak1310 Жыл бұрын
Your viewpoint is wonderful. Do watch the classic movies like 'Afsana' (1951), 'Kanoon' (1960) and 'Jewel Thief' (1967), you will love AK more. Ashok Kumar was the first anti-hero of the Indian cinema. His character in movie 'Kismet' (1943), was the first anti-hero of the Indian cinema, and his character was so much loved by the people that 'Kismet' broke all records and became the first all-time blockbuster of Indian cinema and also the first Indian movie to gross 1 crore. Ashok Kumar was the true trendsetter of Indian cinema. Making movies like 'Kismet' and 'Mahal' in that era, is itself a big achievement. I think Amitabh Bachchan's 'Shakti' was inspired by Ashok Kumar's 'Sangram'. Ashok Kumar was the most daring and courageous actor of his time. Even if we call him the greatest Indian actor ever, many would agree. From a young lover in 'Acchut Kanya' (1936) to an old grandfather in 'Aankhon Mein Tum Ho' (1998), he justified each & every role, in such a long illustrious career. In terms of longevity & versatility, no actor can compete with him. Dilip Kumar admired him, Dev Anand called him his inspiration, Shammi Kapoor considered him his idol, and a lot of many actors were influenced by AK. 'Acchut Kanya', 'Kismet', 'Nazma', 'Mahal', 'Sangram', 'Afsana', 'Parineeta', 'Howrah Bridge', 'Chalti Ka Naam Gaadi', 'Kanoon', 'Gumrah', 'Bandini', 'Meri Surat Teri Aankhon', 'Mere Mehboob', 'Grahasti', 'Rakhi', 'Mamta', 'Jewel Thief', 'Merhraban', 'Aashirwaad' (won both Filmfare & National awards for Best Actor), 'Purab Aur Paschim', 'Pakeezah', 'Victoria No. 203', 'Mili', 'Khatta Meetha', 'Choti Si Baat', 'Khubsoorat', 'Shaukeen', and the list is unending. IMO, he was an acting institution and bigger than any other greats like Dilip Kumar and Amitabh Bachchan.
