They are interesting birds. I was watching a pair yesterday "defending" their chick from a hapless juvenile oystercatcher. Funny to watch and no bird were harmed, although the oystercatcher definitely learned a harsh lesson!

Such graceful birds, couldn't help but liken them to ballerinas and their tutus. Their nests sites look so precarious and pretty incredible their chicks feed straight away. Lovely video, thanks for your work, always appreciated 🪿.
@AShotOfWildlife
@AShotOfWildlife Жыл бұрын
Thank you very much! I think an issue they have had in the past is a lack of good places for them to nest. As you can imagine, if the water drops and mammals can get to the nests they wont last long, but also if the water rises the eggs will get flooded out and not hatch either. They are balancing/nesting on a knife edge!

Their beaks kind of remind me of the mouth of snipe eels with how weird they look compared to other birds (for the record, snipe eel mouths are also very odd looking, being almost as thin and curvy as these birds’ beaks)

I remember as a child watching Animal Magic with Johnny Morris on tv they covered the Avocett's plight and the memory always stayed with me, 4 decades later we were holidaying in Norfolk and we joined the wildlife trust, later as I was talking to a ranger in the car park I told him I really would like to see one as I knew they were scarce, much to the wife's amusment his words were "Turn Around and Look Over There" in and around what can only be described as an oversized puddle or small pond was around six or seven of them, Although it made my holiday I did feel a bit daft , Thank's for the Video 👍👍
@AShotOfWildlife
@AShotOfWildlife Жыл бұрын
Haha, thats Norfolk for you, wildlife is never far away. Im sure the ranger was actually very happy to have fulfilled your wish. Reminded me of when I was filming an intro for the kingfisher fact file on this channel. I was next to a river in norwich and an elderly lady asked what I was doing. I told here I was filming an intro for a kingfisher vide, she said she had never seen one before and just at that moment I heard the whistle of one as it came in to land 20 metres away. She got to see it and I got to share that moment with her, a brilliant experience.

Thanks Donna. It would have been down to habitat destruction mainly, a lot of the places they rely on epuod have been drained for farming and grazing.
