Test optional is mad stupid its the only standardized thing and colleges decide to be blind to it. A bunch of these kids probably had grade inflation whilst having garbage SAT/ACT scores. For yale, the 1400's is just embarrassing.

Not saying these kids are the ones- but I know plenty of kids who got into these elite schools who are solid students, but not stars. But they are legacies, from feeder schools, and can pay the sticker price. Don’t underestimate the importance of being born with a leg up.

I got into Yale this year (didn’t choose to go) and you are 100% right. On admitted students day it felt like every other student was either a legacy or went to one of the big New England boarding schools.
