About Table of Gods ►
Inspired by the world’s oldest recipes, cities, and stories. Table of Gods is not only a cookbook. Table of Gods is a time machine. One that takes you back to the cradle of civilization.
Information ►
- All quotes are spoken in Assyrian. A language that evolved from Aramaic and Akkadian - the official languages spoken in the Neo-Assyrian empire during the reign of Ashurbanipal.
- Some quotes have been edited for clarity by omitting lacunas and/or other parts that obscure the message.
- Ashurbanipal’s age is based on a birth date in 685 BC as suggested by Irving Finkel in his book The Cyrus Cylinder: The Great Persian Edict from Babylon.

Ashurbanipal, his grandfather Sennacherib, and his great-grandfather Sargon II represent the most significant Assyrian monarchs. Yet, Ashurbanipal's diligence vis-a-vis the construction of his great library cannot be underestimated, for its cuneiform clay tablets enabled modern scholars to uncover a myriad of historical mysteries, particularly the discovery of archaic Sumer.

Great documentary and thanks for the effort presenting my ancestors history. As an Assyrian scholar in Assyriology I would suggest for your future videos to present an actual photos of the Nineveh city and king Ashurbanipal reliefs from his palaces and you can get those from the British Museum Galleries. Second, I would add at the bottom of every videos a references of my videos and which books you get from! Again really appreciate the effort and keep going forward to present other Assyrian Kings. The brother's betrayal of his own brother shook the Assyrian king's worldview. The king could not process and overcome this internally. This was the stumbling block and the real reason for the fall of the Assyrian Empire. It was not the superiority and strength of the enemy that led to the downfall of the Assyrian Empire, but rather the disharmony within the family (envy and jealousy in the family, constant comparison of Babylon with Nineveh). It is a story that penetrates the human psyche and captivates it. Even if you are king, all achievements and efforts seem meaningless if there is no cohesion, loyalty and harmony in the family. @tableofgods Very nicely documented and presented by the producers.

Great clip. I just finished reading Eckart Frahm's Assyria: The Rise and Fall of the World's First Empire the other day, and this clip is very much in line with the facts. It's good to see that you added the quotes in the Suryoye language with English translations too, though you omitted most of Ashurbanipal's Susa report, which is arguably the most badass of all Assyrian kings' statements after reporting on a war. Here's an abbreviated version of it: ”Susa, the great holy city, abode of their gods, seat of their mysteries, I conquered. I entered its palaces, I opened their treasuries where silver and gold, goods and wealth were amassed... I destroyed the ziggurat of Susa. I smashed its shining copper horns. I reduced the temples of Elam to naught; their gods and goddesses I scattered to the winds. The tombs of their ancient and recent kings I devastated, I exposed to the sun, and I carried away their bones toward the land of Ashur. I devastated the provinces of Elam and on their lands I sowed salt.“ - Ashurbanipal Really, as far as I'm concerned, Ashurbanipal should have done the same with Babylon, because Babylon's civil war in Mesopotamia, was what ultimately caused the fall of the Neo-Assyrian Empire, and later, the Babylonians destroyed Nineveh and Ashur with the help of the Medes. So Ashurbanipal's biggest mistake is that he was too nice to the Babylonians. Esarhaddon should've never rebuilt Babylon after Sennacherib had destroyed Babylon. Anyway, Ashurbanipal was a great king, and his legacy lives on, through his library. It's thanks to his library that we know so much about the ancient Assyrians and other peoples of the ancient world. Sure, he was brutal when required, but it's his Babylonian brother that was really the cause of the fall of Assyria, because that civil war severely weakened Assyria. Hopefully, in the not too distant future, we Assyrians can have a new Ashurbanipal leading us into a new, glorious future.
@tableofgods
@tableofgods 2 күн бұрын
Eckart's book came out after I wrote the manuscript for this video, but I used other great books and sources. That's a very interesting point-what would have happened if Ashurbanipal destroyed Babylon completely? Maybe the Assyrian Empire would have survived. Who knows? Thank you for your comment :)
@EliasAlucard
@EliasAlucard 2 күн бұрын
@@tableofgods Oh for sure, had Assyria not fallen that early in its imperial period, the Neo-Assyrian Empire would have gone on to rival the Roman Empire in size, if not much bigger. Keep in mind, in 600 BC, the various tribes outside of Assyria weren't as developed and powerful, so it would've been much easier to conquer much of the world at that point. And had that happened, Assyria would probably never have fallen, and we wouldn't have had Islam and so on today. We'd be living in a very different world today, and probably a world for the better. By the way, you should check out Simo Parpola's The Mesopotamian Soul of Western Culture, great stuff. Now, that's how much the Neo-Assyrian Empire influenced the world, in such a short time. Imagine if Assyria didn't fall.

@@tableofgods So I have been thinking about something, you speak Western Aramaic of modern day Turkey, Syria, Lebanon, Jordan, and Israel. Essential Levantine/Anatolian regions. Is the Nineveh Dialect an eastern, or central dialect of Suret? Because the Surets’ of Iran are much different sounding than the Iraqi versions. Could Nineveh dialect be classified as central due to its proximity, difference in pronunciation, and distance from the home land of Proper Assyria? Side note: It would be sort of funny if it was called the “Proper Dialect” or “Proper Suret”. Not because it is the most original, but it is the land of Assyria proper.

I find the history of Iraq, Syria and Assyria fascinating and spellbinding. The advanced civilization of Vedic India and the previous Puranic age saw impression of this culture firmly embossed in Greece, as the name of Agni, Mitra, Varuna, Indra etc., were gladly mixed into their own culture. Next door in Assyria, Vedic name of Asura became their own. Ashurbanipal and many others took Vedic names. Vedic arithmetic and geometry were studied by all. When all the tablets of the library of Ashurbanital is translated, it will be found to be treasure trove of knowledge. At the root of all these were the 11,000 years tradition of Sanatan religion preached by Krishna to the Yadava tribe, and founded the first human civilization. When Turks (Kuru) from central Asia entered India after the collapse of the Harappan civilization and destroyed the imperial Yadava in the Kurukshetra war 1500-1200 bc, a chapter of human civilization was forgotten. Ashurbanipal's library will bring back the lost chapter.

Just a public service reminder: Do not judge men and women of the ancient world by modern standards, you can't possibly imagine the difficulty that was life in this time period, and I don't just mean in terms of food, water, shelter, or war. I mean in terms of how deeply ancient peoples believed in their gods, in omens, in destiny, even people today who believe themselves to be religious simply aren't immersed in religion, in regard to daily life, the way that ancient peoples were. There is very little crossover in terms of morality, because that nice cushy safe society and morality that we live by today? would have led many people to a violent end, simply put, hyper morality is a luxury afforded to us by generations worth of spilled blood and piles of dead bodies.

@27:10..."...on stone from before the Deluge." Hmmmm...I wonder, did Ashurbanipal, believe in a worldwide flood? It would be very interesting to know if in fact...he did. It is quite intriguing, that many, (very many), cultures and societies...actually believed in a worldwide flood. Very interesting.....

If he was in charge while the kingdom was decaying and didn't do anything to prevent it, was he a great king? Clearly there were problems he didn't address and decisions he made that contributed to the destruction soon after him. Is that greatness?
@tableofgods
@tableofgods 6 ай бұрын
It wasn't necessarily decaying just because he lost control over Egypt, which, after all, wasn't that important to Ashurbanipal. The destruction of the empire soon after Ashurbanipal's death can also be viewed from the point of view that he was such a great king that no one could replace him. But also, as you say, that maybe he wasn't, because he didn't establish something that his successors could build upon. But all empires fall. And many empires have fallen after their largest expansion, led by their greatest leader. Neo-Babylon is another example. It fell shortly after Nebuchadnezzar II. It doesn't mean NII was a bad king.

Assyria will rise again!! Babylon has been doomed by God and will never come back to life. Its been mentioned & written in the Bible 🙏.once a great empire gets weak from the inside it cannot survive from the outside. Assyria fell due to its problems from inside. Like many other great empires in the world who came after it. Assyria still remains as the greatest the first empire of all time. Live Long Assyria 💪❤🙏

Do people who support this channel believe in reincarnation? I just want to ask first. If you're interested, I did get some documents from Karen Radner regarding the Assyrian Empire and I have two books containing collections of the words from the Kings themselves. I'm a bit frustrated by the way the United States does things. I found the education system to be lacking and I would rather travel to a different location beyond the confines of an enslaved corporate nation. I desire to see the ruins themselves and I feel called to them.

I really have never understood "man's" idea of himself to go out and hunt and kill an animal up high on the food chain like a Lion. Which really sit atop of the food chain and nature. How killing an animal wearing armor, having swords, or arrows etc. I don't see that making you a strong person at all. To me you're just an asshole. You can't eat Lion. If you can't eat it, ya don't hunt it. Or hunt it with a camera. There's a thought. But I know in ancient times. The Coliseum in Rome, God knows how many animals were killed there for entertainment. Probably a couple hundred thousand died. Thing is we have but 1 job here on earth that makes God really happy. 1. Caring for His Creation, not destroying it. That's it.

Esarhaddon should have done the opposite, and not listing to Naqiʾa advice. Naqiʾa who I believed caused the down fall of the empire. Esarhaddon should have made Šamaš-šuma-ukin the high king of Assyria, and made Ashurbanipal king of Babylon, sense Ashurbanipal was fluent in the Sumerian language the people of Sumer would have respected his rule. Ashurbanipal would be second only to his brother and answer only to his commands. Ashurbanipal would trust his favorite brothers rule, and come and aid him whenever Šamaš-šuma-ukin called on Babylon. Šamaš-šuma-ukin would rule, and trust his younger brother, and his father decision, but also feel like he is living in his older brother Sin-nadin-apli shadow. I believe if he did that the two brother would have unified all of Assyria empire, and would bring about piece in the empire. The oldest son of Esarhaddon, and the youngest in perfect unity.
