HOnestly, might be time for the US to lift some of those restrictions on Japan. Let them build their military to become more of an independant power in the region.

cladglas Yes, granted that now days it's officially self imposed. With that said, I have a feeling that should Japan decide to start Re-Arming and the US was NOT on board with it, Japan might find itself in a whole lot of trouble financially. Trade restrictions and so on. That said, I believe that now days with the current geopolitical climate , the US would be more than willing to overlook that kind of stuff. Hell, they could even be straight up encouraging it. Who knows?

The US fought and defeated these Empires; British, French, Spanish, Prussia, Germany, *Japan,* USSR/Russia. The USA will never allow these former enemies regional hegemonic power.

I think that Malay is better understood as a culture complex rather than a race category. Malaysians, Indonesians, Bruneians may be understood as nationalities/citizenship categories, but these people are made up of different subgroups, and speak various dialects/languages that fall in the Malay category.

Actually 'Malaya' is part of the huge Indonesian archipelago, just like Java, Sumatera, Borneo, Sulawesi, etc. Malaysia is a vague country. If it wasn't supported by British, it will definitely be part of Indonesia. And when Indonesia grows to become a superpower, 'Malays' will have no choice but to be integrated with their bigger brothers.

The belt and road is the rail freight line from South China to Milan and Paris which is the bait to SE Asia and Australasia. North South it is the influence and port investment and trade to gain influence and control of the southern naval pivot and the land US aircraft USN land based Nandi, Auckland, PN and Harewood, Christchurch.

I think the majority of SE Asian countries is plagued by corruption/cronyism to varying degree, as observable in the near dynastical political system, a trend that persist even in the more enlightened Singapore. This trend, coupled with the increasingly large population, widening income gap within the social structure, depletion of natural resources, increased dependent on trades with China and the perpetual conflict of interest within ASEAN members, make presenting a united front against an increasingly powerful China highly unlikely, thus setting stage for China gradual finlandization of SE Asia, as presented by Mr Kaplan in his book.

Robert Kaplan's comments on the situation in Malaysia is decades out of date, and therefore untrue and misleading. For years now the ruling government seems to be doing everything it can to divide the people of Malaysia along ethnic and religious lines. And its getting worse by the day. Kaplan need to keep himself updated on such matters. Talk to the people on the ground, not what the government official's version of the situation.
