“Whoever governs Singapore must have that iron in him. Or give it up. This is not a game of cards! This is your life and mine! I've spent a whole lifetime building this and as long as I'm in charge, nobody is going to knock it down.” ― Lee Kuan Yew

He has a tough job and very heavy responsibility on his shoulder, but he doesn't give up, managed to build a successful country from practically nothing. He is quite an inspiration and has set a good example for many future young leaders here.🕵🏼‍♂️🕵🏼‍♀️

The Overarching strength of Lee Kuan Yew was his wife. The unspoken words of encouragement and a lifetime of companionship. Singapore understood her loss when Lee Kuan Yew was inconsolable when she passed away. It was a formidable team.

6:18 LKY is a "one man intelligence agency." 7:12 It's more valuable to spend time with one smart who's read a whole bunch of books, rather than reading a bunch of books yourself. Find the smartest person and talk to them. (distilled knowledge) 9:50 He's interested in knowing what makes the winners tick. For example, 'The Right Stuff' NASA astronauts, and memoirs of concentration camp survivors - why some perished, while others made it through. The guy you least likely expected based on his makeup, who survived and thrived later in life. 11:45 For society to work, you had to have a class of almost philosopher kinds 13:08 Two biggest mistakes of leaders: 1) Hubris > Confidence, 2) To miss a transformative opportunity when you're presented with it. 16:00 Without a leader, it doesn't matter even if you have all of the right ingredients - you're never going to make the cake right (competitive advantage granted by resources, location, etc. etc.)

Just be pragmatic, what you want is good governance, regardless of the ideology. Since the cold war, most countries and people today have the presupposition that there is and must be a governing ideology that is of absolute righteousness, namely democracy. But in reality, every governing ideology has its flaws, for the longest time about 50% of the democratic countries remained poor, third world and suffering. Today, we are seeing even the best democratic countries starting to fail and produce poor performance. IMO, focus on good governance, what actually needs to be done to produce results, do not focus on ideology. Singapore and China made so much progress because they were pragmatic. Singapore choose the democratic path as the base but employed both socialistic and capitalistic policies and mechanism preserving the pros and eliminating the cons. China realized that communism has failed, and was able to move on and adopt capitalism in global engagement and retain socialistic policies in domestic affairs. Even in western countries, where policies and governance are heavily capitalistic, they always had socialistic mechanisms like tax, social benefits, healthcare etc for balance. Unfortunately those socialistic policies are broken today and we see capitalism run amok in the west causing massive social problems and wealth inequality.

Sunday 24 MARCH 2024 Time: 6.01 pm. A very fruitful day. The prayer went smoothly. My sisters, Mary and Carol did it between themselves and Eng is taken care of too. Carol's hair is cut, you go for a haircut yourself. I thought your hair is growing and looks good. Well, I had 100 assignments to be remembered passionately and a sad family life to give credit to my sisters. Resilient and never say die. Mr K SHANMUGAM. 100 assignments of interesting antidotes. A real sad family. Why bother 6 to 7 uninteresting innocent merry go round. Common. Bury your head in the sand please. Everyone all over the world will laugh at you. Mr K SHANMUGAM Hongyi shengwu right. What's there to say. 1998, now 2024. To all Singapore students, this video is interesting.❤❤❤❤

Lee Kuan Yew was indeed a "grandmaster" of get things done. But did he do the RIGHT things? His metrics were annual GDP growth and "concrete on the ground", i.e., infrastructure. These are the wrong metrics. Singaporeans are the ONLY asset of Singapore. Singaporeans ARE Singapore. The correct measure is the QUALITY OF LIFE of Singaporeans (as measured by real wages, productivity, work quality and standard of living). Singapore is NOT First World using the quality of life metrics. "What gets measured get managed." The grandmaster did NOT measure the right things. The rest is history. If Singapore is a REAL democracy (with basic freedoms, free press, openness and transparency in Government making elections free and fair) it would have a COMPETITIVE political system with the right economic metrics. Democracy is a "messy system" but all the others tried before turned out worse. Competition is always good even in politics. The best ideas are implemented and there is a mechanism for orderly change of government. What countries need is not a "grandmaster" but a "grand political system" called democracy with an effective education system. BTW Lee Kuan Yew limited to a small minority (around 20%) the number of young Singaporeans that can go to universities in Singapore despite steadily increasing reserves and perennial budget surpluses. Uniquely Singapore. Singapore has massive reserves but it cannot buy time. Lee Kuan Yew is gone and he is not coming back. RIP. Time for Singaporeans to move on and. They should QUESTIONS EVERYTHING (ask "hard questions" and demand answers) and make changes, if necessary, to have a better quality of life. What do you think?
