Asia's Largest Slum, India's Richest City | Mumbai: A Tale of Contrasts | Free Documentary
Extreme India - Cow Vigilantes, Disabled Dating & More: • Extreme India: Cow Vig...
It’s one of the most populous cities on the planet with 22 million inhabitants, predicted to increase to 30 million by 2035. Nicknamed ‘the infernal Metropolis’, Mumbai is a city in perpetual development. But with millions of people living in slums located on valuable real estate, how can city planners balance the competing needs of the population?
In Dharavi, the largest slum in Asia, over one million people are packed into the 2 km. slum. But although its residents are poor, there’s a real dynamism. Mahesh, 27, was born and lives in this slum and would never leave it. He runs a recycling plant and employs around 20 people. Dharavi’s underground economy is thought to generate 800 million euros per year. But it also lies on prime real estate in the very centre of Mumbai so its future is in doubt.
Every day, new towers of glass or concrete emerge from the earth. With the support of the municipality, real estate tycoon, Babulal Varma, razes slums to build luxury apartments for the upper classes. As the city constantly expands, it pushes into the surrounding forests and natural spaces, such as Sanjay Gandhi Park. The fifty leopards who live there regularly make forays into the new housing estates. They attack stray dogs, but also the inhabitants. Each year, several people are killed by feline attacks. At night, forest department rangers patrol to prevent leopard incursions.

In the gulf states they need Laborer, streets sweepers, toilet cleaners. In Africa plantation workers and other menial jobs are paying better. Therefore these folks should be send to these countries to have a better salary and contribute to India economic growth.

In the gulf they are treated as slave labour and have their passports taken from them so they can't leave after months and years of not being paid. They are beaten and abused and kept in very poor overcrowded conditions. There are few if any safety conditions in their work places. In Dubai labourers fall from those tall buildings every day. They die of heat stroke and malnutrition and don't even have enough water to drink or bathe in. They often go without food.

While it is not the responsibility or obligation of the rich to help the poor, it would be nice if they did. In a country where a wealthy businessman can spend 1 billion to build a mansion and 100 million can be spent on a wedding, the chasm between rich and poor is so wide.

The top 10 billion and trillionaires could, by their wealth alone, solve world hunger, water access and homelessness. @@cw4608lol, thirst for power and what you call "greed" is ingrained in all of us humans with varying degrees. It's the instinct to be in control and be better. This isn't "greed" it's ambition, and this instinct is not going away any time soon. So instead of whining, why not try to be better and more powerful yourself? As for the sense of superiority, I believe it's directly proportional to your advancement and success as a nation. The more advanced the more you have deep pride in yourself. This doesn't mean we should treat others disdainfully tho, but having pride in one's own self and achievement is good
