The Asian Football Confederation (AFC) Executive Committee has approved the qualification format for Asia’s Road to the FIFA World Cup 2026 as well as the AFC Asian Cup™ 2027 in preparation of the eight direct spots and single Intercontinental Playoff slot allocated to the AFC by FIFA following the expansion of the FIFA World Cup 2026 to 48 teams.

I liked this new qualification format rather than previous. Simple and giving a chance to other teams make it qualify into 2 big major tournament inside FIFA International Calendar Match for AFC Asian Cup and FIFA World Cup. Keep it up FIFA and AFC. 👍👍👍

I like this format. It got a lot easier plus it will give other teams a chance too. Australia, Iran, Japan, South Korea, Saudi Arabia and Qatar can all qualify directly as expected (which makes it 6) while teams like Iraq, UAE and Uzbekistan can be given a chance at the fourth round which also got easier since the fourth round has two groups (to make it 8 in total) unlike the previous fourth round format which had sudden death matches with away goals rule. The fifth round may be interesting as two weaker teams (two runner-ups from the fourth round) will compete to go to the inter-continental playoff

Definitely India has chances to qualify because 12 years ago North Korea which in 105th place in FIFA rankings but they qualified in 2010 FIFA World Cup in 4 slots they fight against strong basement teams like japan s.korea saudi arabia iran. Not happening haha the first 6 spots are going to South Korea, Japan, Saudi Arabia, Australia, Iran and Qatar. The other 2.5 spots are going to UAE, Iraq, Uzbekistan or Oman. This is by stats, but you are right, football is full of surprises, but the teams that have a higher chance to make a surprise are Vietnam, Syria, Jordan, Bahrain or Lebanon. Don't see a pot 3 team making it in this format. In AFC the difference in level between the pot 1-2 and 3 are huge.

The format is too long and involves too many rounds, eliminating teams too early (in October 2023 11 teams will already be eliminated) and qualifying teams for the 2027 AC too soon (18 teams will qualify by June 2024).
