The lyrics were written in collaboration with Lori Lieberman after she was inspired by a Don McLean performance in late 1971. She was so strongly affected by McLean singing the song "Empty Chairs" that it spurred her to write poetic notes on a paper napkin because he touched her world so much with his performance.

@@JustTanya. Charles Fox wrote the music, Norman Gimbel wrote the lyrics that were based on a poem by Lori Lieberman. The original version was sung by Lori Lieberman in 1972, one year before Roberta. Roberta Flack heard Lori's excellent song and she covered it. Roberta was not involved in the writing nor did she sing the original but untill today she receives all the credit instead of Lori.

@@Marco-ns7ih Charles Fox, yeah he worked with him a lot if I remember correctly. That sucks for Lori Lieberman because both Roberta Flack and The Fugees have been making a lot of money off of it.
