Them killing themselves was symbolic of killing their old self in order to move on from the pain of the past. Its a deep deep song and you have to understand a few things about the band as a whole before you can really understand what is going on in the video...For instance...Those two guys in wheel chairs were 2 new members of the band and the band was killing the new members old selves so they could be reborn as a new memeber of the band. Like I said its deep. It also is a tribute to the Bassist Paul Gray who sadly passed away prior to this video and this was the first video they shot without him. He was a founding member and was dearly beloved by the entire band and fans. Like I said its a deep song about conquering fear and pain and killing the old you in order to move forward. Good stuff guys.

Each of the deaths is also symbolic of the person suffering it. Corey is known to have an ego... so he blew up his own head. Syd(dj) can't perform without his hands... so he chewed off his own fingers, christian(beaknose) is afraid of birds, pinhead is afraid of betrayal so he was attacked by his best friend(that was his dog) and so on... there is a behind the scenes video on the making of this video in their official youtube channel that is worth a watch

You and Gabriel provided a perfect breakdown in its simplest form to help people who aren't fans understand. The video has a lot of symbolism that fans who have followed the band since the beginning would only comprehend. Edit: Just to add a little more context the band used old masks throughout the video to represent killing their old selves

Depending on the band the community is based around, we are brothers, allies, friends, etc. But as a whole, the metal community is a family that cares for each other when things get real. We grieve as one like When Chester Bennington died, like when Cliff Burton died, and recently, when Joey Jordison died. So many other times, we have grieved together when a legend died or a rising star passes before his time. But, we also celebrate as one. Good up-and-coming bands spread through the community like a plague and they soar. When they rise and they stay consistent, we MAKE SURE they stay high for as long as possible. Rock bands in general don't ride for long due to money, promotion, or anything else except the love of their fans. We are a self-sustaining family. And when a feud breaks out, it's not just between bands, but inside the family itself. The feud comes to an end as much when the bands settle it as when the fans do. that's why MGK is STUPID to go at Slipknot. He's trying to feud the way hiphop and rap does. That won't pass. If he doesn't drop it soon, he'll be shoved out of the genre completely and NOT kindly. Not by Slipknot, either. By the fans, by the family.

I'm a lifelong metal head, mosh pits, brawls, band tattoos drugs alcohol etc, (most of that is behind me now), but when i was at my lowest, songs like this reminded me that i could be better. take for instance vermillion from slipknot, it's about a stalker that ultimately kills a girl because she doesnt want him so he does the only thing he can to "make her his", he takes her life for his own. sure, that's what the song is about, but to me when i listened to it, i realized the damage i was doing to the mother of my child with my wild habits and addictions, it forced me to look inward and confront a part of myself that was toxic and helped me process it. there is always a meaning to a song that the artist creates, but part of the beauty of music is the freedom of expression, and interpretation. if it means something to you in a sense, that's all that matters. great reaction guys. much love

The first single from .5: The Gray Chapter to be released to radio and music channels features clean and melodic vocals from Corey Taylor in its verses before he sings on the chorus: Step inside See the Devil in Too many times we've let it come to this Taylor explained the song's meaning to The Pulse of Radio: "'The Devil In I' is really about the war inside yourself," he said. "Trying not to give into defeatism, trying not to give into negativity, trying not to give up basically. It's a struggle. It's one of the hardest thing you can do, is to give in to that side of yourself." 5: The Gray Chapter debuted at #1 on the US albums chart. It was Slipknot's second long player to top the list, their previous studio release, All Hope Is Gone, reached the summit in 2008. The song's music video was directed by Slipknot drummer Shawn Crahan and features the destruction of band members in various ways. Chris Fehn, for instance, is pecked to death by ravens, a fate he requested for himself as the percussionist suffers from a fear of birds. Sid Wilson, meanwhile, eats his arm and fingers in the clip, destroying the things most important for the DJ's role in the band. "Basically, this video is about finding past devils, past things - becoming one with it and then doing away with it," Crahan explained

HAHAHA! I knew she was going to freak the moment I saw that they were watching the video and not just listening to the song. That video definitely is over the top gross.. It's what happens when you let Clown loose.. I mean the guy photographs roadkill and maggots.. The interesting thing is that they are all shown dying by their greatest fears. "The Devil In I" is the survivor's guilt that Corey was going through that made him want to kill himself to be with his best friend as well as it made him turn on everyone he loved because they couldn't understand what he was going through. In a way those 9 guys were closer than actual brothers could ever be, and like brothers they fight but they still love each other. And notice that until they killed the guys in the wheelchair, you never saw the bassist or drummer but as soon as they did, they went right to showing closeups of them like "okay, now you are worthy of being introduced" though for the first tour rotation V-man (bassist) wasn't allowed out of his little box on stage and they told him if he left it he'd be out of the band.. and so of course Chris (long nose) Sid (one eating himself) and Clown (duh clown..) fought like hell to try to shove him out of his box and make him earn it. The fun part about their new drummer Jay is that he can actually be seen in the Disasterpiece Live DVD at like 9 sitting on his dad's shoulder's with a replica of Corey's original mask on. (and his dad Max Weinberg was Bruce Springstein's drummer forever)

The point of the video is to get rid of all your pain no matter the cost. So its almost like when you have a good friend or family member pass away. Are you going to grieve over their passing? And, never live? or, are you going live your life in their spirit live on and be happy. You see soo many pop artists have one thing in comment they always show positively. Yes it's a good thing to an extent but in order to keep that positively going you have to kill what hurts you have to destroy the pain that haunts you. Most pop artists unfortunately dont do that in their music. You have to show somewhat of both sides of the platform. Ive been listening to slipknot since i was 16. (When i got into metal) and ill be 32 in a few weeks so been listening for 16 years lol

Impossible to not love Corey's voice, you should check out his solo acoustic stuff and Stone Sour...great band, much more mellow. _Please watch Spit It Out Live at Download Festival 2009,_ gives you a hint at how powerful they are live with their fanbase( the maggots). It's nuts!!

i got to give you two props, non metal heads actually taking the meaning in and giving it your own spin, not just seeing it and going " that's just messed up!!" Remember we listen to this because this is what we feel inside , THE DEVIL INSIDE. We listen to this as the rage and horror we know can't handle .........we release|! Not pretty, but for us it real. That rage, that hate. That fear of our worst selves. This song lets us say " Not today, you wont get me today. I am not afraid " it lets us feel heard. The band was doing just that,, they just lost their boy. This was their way of putting their worst fears out there. facing them and yelling into the void "I do not the fear! Do your worst" and they were telling us "Face it with me"
