Its like a toxic relationship where a guy is trapped with a severe narcissist. She is two faced, and often it seems like there are actually two of her. She isn't capable of love (but doesn't know that because...well, she's a severe maladjusted narcissist.) She makes him perform (demonstrating his love for her, doing menial tasks, paying for everything, taking the blame and apologizing even though she's the one who is wrong, etc.) in exchange for her noticing him, pretending to care about his needs...or even acknowledge they exist...being physically affectionate, or whatever. No matter how much he does she will never be capable of reciprocating his feelings. Since he has his own issues where he believes nobody could ever actually love him, he views her in some way as the ultimate goal. If he can make her love him, then truly he must be worthy of love after all. Narcissists know what love is in the same way a colorblind person knows that the shape, size and lettering of a stop sign clearly indicates that the sign would be colored red. They can emulate the outward forms and expectations of love for a time, but they can not actually engage in acts of love for real anymore than that colorblind person will ever know what the hell "red" looks like. So, he pursues her, performing however she tells him to, attempting to get her to actually love him as opposed to simply rewarding him with some false pretension of love for a brief moment. If he succeeds he will now become worthy of being loved and can leave her...because she sucks and is like the worst person he's ever been around. He can't leave until she loves him though. But she's a narcissist. She can't love him, she can't love anyone. So they're trapped together in an endless cycle. Or its about the music industry or something, take your pick.

People say it’s about metaphor the love/hate relationship between artists:mucks industry but it definitely fits the idea of a person who is in a toxic relationship. Only whos keeping who? It seems like while he thinks she is the one “in love” with him and “kept,” it is actually him that is addicted to her bad treatment. He likes her when she’s awful and awful to him. Maybe?

Even though it's not where it's intended to go, this lyrics of this song makes me think of the probable mind state of my sisters ex bf who tried to tried to murder her years ago. Especially the "we were meant to be together, now die and fucking love me" part. I was the one she called to get her out of that apartment after he had bashed her to unconsciousness over and over again, crushed her windpipe strangling her. Then when he found out she was getting the fuck away from him for good, he bluetacked a photo of them two together on the bed rest and OD'd so we'd find him like that. He survived and she pressed charges, but he was completely fucked in the head and believed he really had a right to take my sisters life. And that's the gloomy place this song takes me.
