Tribute to Carole King. She is an American treasure of a song writer. She was receiving the Kennedy Center honors award. She has 4 Grammys and has written so many hit songs for so many artists! The reason I wanted to request this was for the power of Aretha. RIP to the Queen of Soul. Great reaction🤓🤠❤️

Correction Asia and BJ. This was at the Kennedy Center honoring Carole King who wrote Natural Woman. Carole King is shocked that Aretha sat behind the piano because she had not done that in years due to her ill health. Aretha was 74 when she performed this for Carole.

That's how amazing this performance was...and knowing Aretha was battling cancer and still belted this out with superstar power...it just hits like nothing else.. and,.it's brought millions of us to tears.

THE MINK DROP THO! Everyone was emotional because Aretha had been ill and had not been doing a lot of live concerts. She had been so sick for so long that there were rumors she was dying. So Carole King (yes, she wrote this song) was first of all surprised that Aretha showed up for her special tribute. There were other singers on the stage, so then she was surprised that Aretha was actually going to sing. But she really freaked out when Aretha sat down at the piano, because that was VERY unusual--she had not been singing and playing at the same time in concert for quite a while. Folks were so surprised and happy to see Aretha that they were ready to love it regardless--they had no idea how sick she was and whether she had "lost a step". Then she SANG the song like THAT. It was as if she turned back time. You saw the spontaneous standing ovation. It turned out to be her last public performance.

Aretha Franklin is a national treasure. I believe the the reason there was so much emotion in the audience is because this was recorded in the late 60s. This was an extremely tumultuous time in our history as a nation the assassinations of JFK MLK Malcon x Medgar Evers and the ongoing war in Vietnam with 58 thousand dead and the Civil Rights movement along with the hateful Jim Crow laws. This was indeed a very sad chapter in our history and to see the first black President tearing during this epic song along with a Baby Boomer croud they all had flashbacks in time. I also got emotional when hearing this performance I was born in 1960 Brooklyn I am proudly part of the era. 😢

The lady the camera kept going to was Carole King. She was a writer of the song, which she wrote FOR Aretha Franklin's debut album in 1967. This was in 2015 when Carole King was being celebrated at The Kennedy Center Honors. Seeing her play & hearing her sing it, Carole said she kept saying to her daughter (who was sitting behind her) "Oh my God! Oh my God!" That moment in itself was a great honor. Carole King wrote this song specifically for Arethra. No wonder she was called the Queen of Soul, she could belt out a song like no one's business. I want to share a little story. I live on the east coast of Canada and my then hairdresser had a picture of herself with someone who looked very familiar. I asked her " is that Arethra Franklin " ? She replied yes and proceeded to tell me she was at a hairdressers' convention in New York ? but I could be wrong about the city, it was quite awhile ago. Anyway, she spotted Arethra going into a store to shop. My friend approached one of her entourage/bodyguard and asked if he thought she would take a picture with her and he said yes. So, when she came out , Arethra was so gracious and accommodating. I'm sure she still has that pic on her mirror at work. I know I would. Love your reactions and you have an awesome voice Azia 👍🎵😁

ASIA! Big smile on my face right now after your little bit of singing at the end. I mean I've seen some of your videos so I know you can sing and you do it a little bit frequently, but that was wonderful. Really put some air behind it and I wish you would do that more often; it is so freaking cool. I've seen this performance of the Carole King song before and it's amazing and I also thought that the taking off of the fur coat was planned because I'm sure it was hot no doubt, but I think by her casting it off like that and showing herself just as she is at that age at that weight but proving that she has all the soul and the ability to sing in the world, that literally embodies the sentiment of the song. It's like, take me as I am.

My favorite performance by her. You should watch the Kennedy Center Honors sometime I think they are aired in October. They are so well done.
