Point of clarification; Aretha only had 30 minutes notice about filling in for Pavrotti!
@faafafineartist5 ай бұрын
Yes. She sang it at another event 2-days before (so she was familiar with the song), but on the night she didn't expect to sing it, but when approached, she was literally given 10-mins to get it together, and KILLED IT!!
@breonwilson8790Ай бұрын
No. She had less than 10 minutes. There are several videos about it from her and the Grammys people. They got the notice about 30 minutes before, but she was asked about 8 minutes before. She then asked to listen to the rehearsal tape, and said, “This is going to be fun” with like 2 minutes before going on stage.

This is the #1 Greatest Grammy Moment I think. It’s been brought up many times given how unique it was, surprised folks were, and how Aretha executed it. She’s a consummate pro and also so assured that she probably didn’t care what folks thought. The Queen knows her capabilities.

2 days? She had to step in, at the very last minute, in less than an hour since she was already scheduled to present or perform. In an hours time? Bananas. She had performed it two days prior which is why she’s familiar with the material, eventhough it was a different conductor and orchestra. Brilliance!

Is this when she stepped in for Luciano Pavarotti? He got ill. If so I saw it live and remember it vividly. I was yelling, "You better sing, Aretha!" My goodness. I met Aretha Franklin at a rest stop in NJ coming from Atlantic City. I saw her, tapped on her limo door, and got her autograph on the back of a taco bell receipt. She was in the middle of eating it when I interrupted her. RIP Aretha Franklin. I love you 🌹
