The Grateful Dead music is a rabbit hole that is deeper than all others, I strongly encourage you to explore it!!!! Greatest band and greatest music to ever exist, so deep, so soulful, so much energy, there is no end to the rabbit hole!!!! It's not too late to get on the bus, go for it!

This is what Deadheads call Disco Dead. There were some years during the Arista Records label in the height of the disco era where the Dead expanded their discography to include that hip sound of the time. But shakedown street is the crowd that camps out at all the shows they performed. Much more to the story...

i would like to recommend a live version of the song "Shakedown Street", 9/6/80 Lewiston, Maine. It was my first, but certainly not my last, Grateful Dead concert. Usually, this song is played in big cities like New York, Philadelphia, Chicago, Los Angeles, Seattle, etc., but the boys opened the second set at Lewiston with a massive 14 minute jamout version that is so fun to listen to. You would really enjoy the stretched out guitar work Jerry Garcia laid out, and Phil Lesh's Bass line boomed over the Maine countryside. The concert took place at the State Fairgrounds with the band up against the Grandstand and facing the crowd of about 30,000 or so, spread out on the "grassy" infield of the horse racing track, on a beautiful September afternoon, glorious.

@@t.j.payeur5331 Glad to meet ya T.J.. Yeah I didn't want to go even deeper into the whole experience, but Roy Buchanan and The Cate Brothers with Levon Helm were just crazy. I had seen Roy a year or two before, so I was ready for his set for sure. And The Cate Bros. had "Union Man" out a couple of years prior so I had heard them, and of them. But having Mr. Levon Helm, RIP, with them was a treat. BTW, The Cate Brothers and Levon are all from Arkansas, hence the connection, he sort of "discovered" them.

About 32 years ago my fiance and I visited San francisco. He had lived there so he was showing me around. I believe it was Golden Gate Park. Walking around tons of people we weren't sure why bikers on Harleys. We kept walking and came on and outdoor free concert of the Grateful Dead was ending and got to hear Joan Baez closing it out singing Amazing Grace acapella. Awesome day.

their albums although awesome never quite give you what the Dead were all about, it was the community at the shows before, during and after, just people being people and talking to everyone and interacting with everyone didn't matter who you were. and the shows were full of long flowing, funky(sometimes) music that people just danced to. some of their songs they would play for 15-20 minutes, some longer with other songs intermixed in the middle. the whole atmosphere was the experience🪴🪴💃🕺

Shakedown street USED TO BE the heart of town. In the 1940's when the freeways came through the heart of thousands of towns the heart would get moved, leaving the old neighborhood to become towtruck yards, metel shops, a dive bar, and who knows what, but if you look close like an archeologist you might see an old hotel with a big dance hall (that is now being used as a warehouse) that used to be the heart of town.

Hey you two, just a suggestion.....whenever you listen to the Grateful Dead, try to choose a live version of the requested song. The Dead was all about their live shows......and no issues because they let their fans, the Deadheads, tape their shows for free. I saw them live several times fortunately.
@scapito

I requested this in one of their live streams. The problem with asking for a live performance for them to react to is length... most of the live performances are too long for a live stream reaction.

Caution with this rabbit hole, it could easily take a lifetime to crawl through. They have nearly as many albums as Zappa, and should you get through all those albums, you get to the live bootlegs versions as Song A on Date H at City Y is way different than Song A on Date K at City Z, and the collections of all the places over all the times playing all the gigs get very vast indeed. Having said that, no understanding of the 70s & 80s rock can be complete without some exposure to the wonderous that is The Grateful Dead and all the Dead Heads.

That guitar player was Jerry Garcia - and most of his best music was recorded live in the late 70’s & early 80’s . Listen to the guitar , bass , drummer( s ) and rhythm guitar player . Every recording was different from the last , even though the songs were the same - the Dead an enigma .

June 30th,1985...Merriweather Post Pavilion in Columbia,MD. The next day Ecstasy would become a Schedule 1 Narcotic,so between the E being everywhere and the groovy Goony Bird acid that was rampant that summer,the crowd was blissed AF. And the boys opened up the second set with what's widely regarded as the most smoking version of Shakedown ever. Plenty of good audio versions of it here on YT,if you want to get a feel for what a live Dead show was like,warts and all,I highly recommend. The entire second set that night was stellar.

Yes indeed, best Shakedown I ever had the pleasure to interact with live and there were many of them. Was out on the lawn just outside the pavilion by the entrance on the right. Dancing in front of a stack of speakers. The crescendo towards the end reached the highest of heights and to this day gives me butterflies in my stomach every time I hear it. The whole band was on 🔥, Bobby’s rhythm work was masterful on this track.

@@Eclipse7Re Bro,no doubt. My crew and I did our lone Alpine Valley excursion that summer,so hit Wisconsin on 6/21 and 22 and then followed them town to town back to Merriweather,our "home" turf and then up to Pittsburgh on 7/2. 85 summer tour is definitely my favorite Dead tour that I ever got to follow (at least my part of it),so much fun. Phil playing with those new Modulus basses and the massive power amps he had to back them up...Holy Hell some of the bomb notes he was dropping. We were near the mixer board at Hershey,right before the MPP shows,and he dropped a crusher during Morning Dew that knocked people the Hell out of their seats,haha. That crescendo near the end of Dear Mr. Fantasy at this show was a physical force too. Fun times,sadly their like will not be seen again in an age of auto-tune.
