If this is your first "The Grateful Dead" experience, keep digging, there's a lot more. This band had 30K to 50K fans follow them around the world for 30+ years making it the largest peaceful movement of people on earth ever in recorded history. The only other times that there were that many people moving together for that span of time is war.

Oft dismissed by Deadheads as a silly disco number, it gained solid traction over the years, especially amongst non-GD fans. You mentioned Steely Dan and Bee Gees, and despite none of these three bands actually having much in common, they did for a brief moment in the late 70's, whilst coming from entirely different backgrounds. Hated by punks and ignored by most of the youth audience at the time, they all managed to get in the charts (with various success) thanks to disco vibes and white funk heat. Also see: Miss You.

This isn't typical of the Grateful Dead. The Rock & Roll version of the Dead is "U.S. Blues." It's a really fun song. Hope you give it a review. And Happy Thanksgiving, young lady. 🙂
@joshs45944 жыл бұрын
@@lakecrazy "U.S Blues," "Scarlet Begonias," "Casey Jones," "Estimated Prophet." Don't get me wrong, I'm not knocking "Shakedown Street." It's a good, fun song. I like it because it shows some of their amazing versatility, like their version of "Dancin' in the Streets." My favorite Dead song is "Terrapin Station" because it has some very un-Dead like classical orchestrations with some spectacular guitar work by Jerry Garcia. Bottom line, I like all their music without being a "Deadhead." 🙂
@joshs45944 жыл бұрын
@@lakecrazy All I said was that "Shakedown Street" isn't the style they're generally known for. I wasn't trying to judge or classify anything. "Deadheads" or "Dead Heads" were loyal fans that were always high on drugs and followed the band all over the country for months at a time, often longer. I know one. It was an obsession with him. I remember him saying he's been to over 220 Dead concerts. I couldn't relate (or afford) that level of loyalty.

It's sweet and funky with a chill message in the lyrics. I used to be one of this song's haters as it did feel like a sell-out during the disco period, but at the time, I didn't understand that this ain't disco, it's too funky (disco is straight on the beat 4/4 time, where this here is a bit more syncopated).

In the 70's the best seats for a Dead show was up high near the back where you could watch the entire crowd trip to the sounds. Pure magic.
