It was 1972. I was an 18-year-old guy dancing with my prom date to this banger of a song at my high school senior prom. Now I'm a 68-year-old senior citizen watching the young generation enjoying the songs of my youth. Awesome!

Love this group. The Hollies are a British pop rock group formed in 1962 & known for their great harmonies. They had so many great songs such as "Bus Stop", "Stop Stop Stop", "On A Carousel", "Carrie Anne", "Just One Look", "Here I Go Again", "Look Through Any Window", "King Midas In Reverse", "Jennifer Eccles", "Long Cool Woman In A Black Dress" & "The Air That I Breathe". "Graham Nash" was originally in this group & left in 1968 to form "Crosby, Stills & Nash".

The song is about a speakeasy back in the prohibition days. No drinkin' allowed, but here they were drinking bootleg booze on a Saturday night on the west side of town in a speakeasy. He's working with the FBI trying to shut down the "nest of Bad Men" but loses focus when this long cool woman in a black dress starts singing. In the end, he's promising to forgive her since she's probably giving up evidence on this illegal booze hall that she works at. Sounds like a story from an old Humphrey Bogart / Lauren Bacall romance Mystery movie. Always loved this song and you guys did an amazing job with it! Thanks !

Next, check out an 80's banger from Donnie Iris, "Ah Leah !" And for more throwback dance tunes, check out a Canadian group, "The Kings", doing their hit song "This Beat Goes On / Switchin' To Glide". Yeah, it's so good they couldn't stop so they joined two songs together. This is how you get a party started! If you do this, use the video from "American Bandstand", with Dick Clark. Thanks!

This was one of those guitar riffs that just grabbed me. As soon as I heard it I had to learn to play it - I was about 14 when this album (Distant Light) came out and I'd been playing guitar for about a year at that point. That was the spring/summer of 1972 and I still jam to that record. There's a few good songs on that record: "What A Life I've Led" (with Mick Abrahms, of Jethro Tull fame on pedal steel guitar) "To Do With Love" "Promised Land" (Heavier vibe than what The Hollies were known for, but the guitar work in this song is worth the listen. And there's even a wee homage to the harmony based songs from the Graham Nash era) I think you should check out: "Carrie Anne" (a "shy love letter" to Marianne Faithful) "Bus Stop" "He Ain't Heavy, He's My Brother"

The Hollies were doing cute songs like "Bus Stop" that was great but when this one hit the transistor radios, everyone was like, "That's the Hollies!?" They went hard fast and it made this song unique in addition to its perfection which was always a trademark for them, it was a riff that was totally new and sounded like it was the roots of rock, it is a classic.

The earlier song Bus Stop is tremendous but this is probably my favorite Hollies song. Although I would also say, All I need is the air that I breathe. But it's amazing to me how so many people even my age that grew up around this mistakenly believe that this is a Creedence Clearwater Revival song. I guess that vocal with the reverb on it is reminiscent of John Fogerty. But every instrument in this song is fantastic. The rhythm section is killer, the way the drums and the bass work together. And of course the guitar and then his wonderful voice and the lyrics tell a story but it's also humorous. And it is truly a fantastic dance song.

Most of the reviews/reactions I've seen of The Hollies are of this song and of their two beautiful ballads, "He Ain't Heavy, He's My Brother" and "The Air that I Breathe," both of which came in the early '70s. But The Hollies really made their mark on popular music in the '60s as part of the onslaught of bands that comprised "The British Invasion," following The Beatles over from the U. K. to be met with huge commercial success here in America. The first of their hits that I remember was from 1964 with "Just One Look," which peaked at #2 in the U. K. but never really found similar success in the U. S. But that would change with their 1966 release of "Bus Stop," their first top ten hit in America. They followed that with "Stop, Stop, Stop" and "On A Carousel." "Carrie Anne" was another top ten hit. My two favorite Hollies hits of the '60s were "Look Through Any Window" (1965) and "Pay You Back With Interest" (1967), which was only released as a single here in America. The earlier Hollies material (before 1969) included Graham Nash in the group. Graham Nash would leave the group in '69 to join David Crosby and Steven Stills to form the supergroup, Crosby, Stills and Nash (later joined by Neil Young to become known as Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young), one of the most important rock groups in history. (Listen to "Suite Judy Blue Eyes" or most anything from their first two albums, "Crosby Stills and Nash" or "De Ja Vu." Two landmark albums in rock 'n roll history. If you want to hear Graham Nash, check out his lead vocal on the gorgeous "Lady Of the Island." kzbin.info/www/bejne/Y3WxdmaiZc2Ugc0 It's threads like these that get overlooked by reaction channels, since you guys don't know all these threads that connect different artists and groups. I guess that's why we're here...to tell you. "Long Cool Woman (In A Black Dress)" was a cool song, alright. But honestly, it pales in comparison to many of those '60s songs that the Hollies released before it. If you need a push for where to start, I'd point you to "Bus Stop." kzbin.info/www/bejne/enezpmtpnMyHoq8
