“Bennie And The Jets” is about kids fanboying and fangirling over a fictional band called Bennie and the Jets. A lot of rock songs are meant to be like little movies. They paint a fictional scene and/or are sung from the point of view of fictional characters talking about fictional things.

Yep, it's just a little made-up narrative that you can day dream about, while you listen to a great music track. Like a lot of pop, the song is the body, and the lyrics are just some clothes it wears - they're well crafted and fun but they're not trying to be T. S. Eliot‎.

When he hit the American scene as a solo artist, his music was incredible . We had never heard much piano work like this in a while. This is truly one of his best. There so many more such as: saturday night's alright for fighting, rocket man, goobye yellowbrick road, and my personal favorite funeral for a friend/loe lies bleeding. I always liked his catalog from the 70s better than his 80s work. More rock and roll than pop oriented. Great stuff though!
@markharris1125
@markharris1125 2 жыл бұрын
Hi Don. I know a lot of people prefer his earlier stuff, but I personally love many of those 80s albums, and of course he's gone on to do great work up to the present day. Someone who had two UK #1s in 2021 must be doing something right (even though one was a remix and one a Christmas song with Ed Sheeran!). Personally, my top two are 'Funeral For A Friend/Love Lies Bleeding' (from 1973) and 'This Train Don't Stop there Anymore' (from 2001). They change position, I can't really choose. And my #3 is 'The One' from 1992. I wish reaction channels would dip into his later work from time to time. I do appreciate that many are hearing it for the first time, but this is a multi-decade artist and I'd love to hear some later songs get some love. Asia and BJ, how about giving those three a whirl? Oh, and someone below mentions 'Sacrifice' (1989) - there's the 70s, 80s, 90s and 00s covered! Toss in 'Home Again' from 2013 and we've covered the 10s!

Elton John ruled the radio in the seventies. He may be best known these days for his ballads, but his rockers are a lot of fun too -- "Crocodile Rock", "Saturday Night's Alright for Fighting", "The Bitch Is Back" -- and for something completely different, check out the clip of him performing "Pinball Wizard" from the 1975 Ken Russell film of The Who's 1969 rock opera album Tommy.

It's about a futuristic all-girl punk band. Bernie Taupin wrote it as a satire about the rock music scene at the time -- glam rock arena concerts. The Bennie is Bernie's old girlfriend Sally Bennington (electric boots , mohair suit, etc.).

Interesting note: Elton didn't think Bennie should be released as the 'single' but was out voted by a record exec. One of the few songs of the 70's that the artist performed on American Bandstand AND Soul Train! Bennie also went on to be a signature song for Elton John and Bernie Taupin.

He's hyping up a band called "Bennie And The Jets", and how they're going to blow your mind, with their style, and new sounds. Is it for real? No. Anticipation, and excitement, for something new? That's for real, 'cause he hits the audience, with some synth sounds, that were, mostly, new.

I used to hate this song. I know, what was I thinking? I remember being at a concert, Wembley Arena, and when he hit that first note I decided this was the time to take a break and off I headed to the bathroom (as you would say). I remember being in there and you could still hear the music echoing from the auditorium, and I was thinking, 'Why does he have to play this terrible, disjointed, melody-less mess of a tune? And I was a massive fan, as well. But something sometime switched on in my brain and I realised it's actually a masterpiece. That piano section (starts at about 5 minutes in your video is magnificent) and the way he starts repeating 'Bennie' at the end is wonderful. It is just a fantastic song. In over a year's time he'll be here in London and I'll be in the audience for two concerts, and when he hits that first note I'll be up on my feet - not to go to the bathroom but because I'll be so excited. And when I sit down again, I'll do Asia's little dance in honour of this video. As to what the song means - it's funny you spent the last few minutes describing Elton's flamboyance, his sparkly clothing, his voice, his piano playing - well, that's what it means! The singer is describing this fantastic (fictional) band in just the way you were talking about Elton. I thought it was quite sweet that you didn't realise that you were the singer and Elton was Bennie. But look, he's over there in North America at the moment. I imagine everywhere is sold out, but you two have 158K subs on KZbin, that's quite a calling card. Is a press pass out of the question? Go and hear 'Bennie and the Jets' performed live. You probably won't get another chance. Lovely reaction. I have a comment to make further down, I hope you read that one as well.

I absolutely love Elton's sound. My parents played tons of his music when I was growing up. I'm going to request one of his lesser known songs, based on never seeing it in the comments. Could y'all check out his song, "Blue Eyes"? It's slower, but hauntingly good. 💙 from a couple hours south!

Elton wrote the music to this song as an homage to glam rock, a style defined by outrageous costumes that was popular in the early '70s, especially in the UK. Artists like David Bowie and Gary Glitter got into the act, but for Elton, it was an extension of his personality - he really was gay and liked to wear feminine clothes on stage. He became known for his wild appearance and collection of gaudy sunglasses.

I saw him live in Central Park in the '80's. He played that one-key note and all of Central Park went CRAZY! An outdoor concert I'll never forget.

Classic party Anthem! 1973 maybe! Elton was his best in the 70’s. I was in 7th grade when this hit.

I miss Elton John on tour Your Song 1969, Crocodile Rock 1972, Teacher i Need You, 1972, one of my favorites, Benny and the Jets 1974, Someone Saved my Life tonight, 1975, just too many hits to remember from this talented musician. Iconic pianist. My favorite has to be Elton John. My brother got me hooked.

Awesome review y'all. Some other EJ suggestions: Rocket Man (album cut is hauntingly beautiful - turn it up to hear the bass and synthesizers!); Ticking, Indian Sunset, Mona Lisas and Mad Hatters, Daniel, GBYBR, etc...
