This father and son conversation sounds just like my father and me, back in the day. My pops is 97 now and thankfully he is still with us, hopefully he will be with us awhile longer. He had more wisdom than I gave him credit for back then.

Ohhh. Cat Stevens, wow! He’s amazing. He is a folk singer, a poet that puts beauty to music. His vocals are gritty and sweet all at the same time. I’ve heard his songs at folk festivals, at country events and 60s reminiscing concerts. And I went to catholic school and back in the 60s we had folk masses. We sang Morning Has Broken in church to single acoustic guitar. He conjures many emotions and memories to a different time. Very 60s. VERY!

Yeah that gritty voice. I knew the song was old, and before I saw his picture I thought he was too when he did this song. But he was young, probably in his 20s or early 30s. The irony is that he's old now, and sound exactly the same.

Cat Stevens has truly kept me from dying from a broken heart. I adore this man. He goes by his Muslim name, Yusuf Islam, now. He will always be the sublimely fabulous Cat Stevens to many of us. I adore this man and his music. Please read his story...he left music when he was at the top of his game in order to follow his new faith, Islam. It took years for him to understand how important his music was, and is.

Someone commented that hearing this tune on the same day with CSN&Y singing OHIO was amazing. When young people were drafted and shipped to a foreign war, the protests were ignored until they became too hard to ignore. Like 'Teach Your Children Well' both sides need to be seen and understood. There can be wisdom on both sides of father and son.

Good reaction, team. The line "From the moment I could talk I was ordered to listen" is pivotal to this song. As a parent you need to keep your kid safe and well and teach him/her. But you must allow your offspring to grow and blossom. Getting that balance is impossible. As a child you have to listen and realise that your parents are not deliberately stifling you and are attempting to provide the best environment for you to grow. Understanding that is nigh on impossible. So reconciliation tends to happen after the kids have flown the nest, usually when they have kids of their own. But sometimes the reconciliation never happens. You may gather that this song brings me to reflect on my own life.

I was 16 when this song came out in 1970 and I learned it from a Cat Stevens song book and sang and played it on my guitar all the time, totally feeling the Son's part about having to rebel, break away, find myself. Last year, my 22-year old son heard the song somewhere and texted me to ask If I "had ever heard of it." I found that old songbook from 50 years ago and it fell open to Father and Son from my having played it so often back then. I texted him back, "Yeah, I have." I started singing it again, and of course, now I relate to the Father wanting to pass on his wisdom to the Son who is out in the world finding himself. And yeah, I'm choking up a bit as I tell this.

So is the album "Teaser & The Firecat". His first big hits were "Matthew & Son", "I Love My Dog" & "The First Cut Is The Deepest" in 1967. He has had so many great songs in his career such as "Father & Son", "Wild World", "Moonshadow", "Peace Train", "Morning Has Broken" etc. He is still recording & performing live & his voice still sounds great.

I have been fortunate to have a guitar duet partner for 31 years. We met as hired musicians at a church in St Paul in 1990 and have been playing together since (although mostly secular music since 1992). We split the parts so I do the father parts and Tim does the son parts. It also allows us to do the overlapping parts in the last couple verses. Cat Stevens has a lot of really good songs, some of which I've played over the years. Good stuff!

This is my favourite Cat Stevens song. And he has many many more hits. This song initially was a song Stevens wrote for a movie on the Russian civil war about a father begging his son to not leave n go to war. But the project was sidelined by Cat’s hospitalization due to TB. When he recovered he redid some of the lyrics and released it in his own album, Tea For The Tillerman which by the way is one of the greatest albums ever recorded.

Born Steven Demetre Georgiou 1948 in London to a Greek/Turkish father & a Swedish mother & his parents operated the Moulin Rouge! He dated Carly Simon in the early 70s & she wrote the song "anticipation" about him! He had a religious experience in 1977, gave up music, converted to a Muslim, changed his name to Yusuf {Arabic for Joseph} Islam & he & his wife spend most of their time living in Dubai! He was also put on a "watch list" & prohibited from coming to the US after 9/11 but was taken off the list after 2 years! Father & son is my favorite song by him that I dedicated to the birth of my son 32 years ago! PEACE LOVE n HIPPYNESS ✌☮

Cat Stevens totally informed my "formative years" and many of his songs connect beautiful memories--playing guitar while my sister sang "Morning Has Broken" at our church's Easter sunrise service, singing "Moonshadow" to my baby brother as we made our way through the woods at night to keep him from being scared, dancing and singing with my groovy friends to "Peace Train". I remember hearing about people burning their Cat Stevens albums when he dropped out of the music industry after he converted to Islam. What idiots. So glad I still have all of mine.

Great song and artist!! I believe one of the most poinient lyrics is often overlooked…the father tells his son “I was once like you are now, and I know it’s not easy…to be calm when there’s something going on” trying to let his son know that he was in his shoes and understands the frustration…Tea for the Tillerman was one of the first LP’s I bought in 1970…will always be a classic - beautiful acoustic guitar

It’s a universal thing, isn’t it? The conversation is so real in many families, many cultures.

Yusuf Islam is an amazing artist. He writes beautiful songs. A couple of my favorites of his are Wild World, Peace Train and Where do the children play

If I recall, it's a conversation between a father and son after the son enlists in the military.

Cat Stevens was HUGE in the 60s/70s! Then he converted to Islam, became Yusuf Islam, and left the music business. He's just recently returned, realizing he can follow his religious beliefs and make music for the public. Peace Train was probably his masterpiece.

He was one of the best singers ever! He ended up following another path and I miss him but we all need to do the thing that speaks to our hearts. He never made a bad song. Moon shadow, Peace Train, The First Cut is the Deepest, Hard Headed Woman to name a few!

Cat Stevens converted to Islam in 1977 and is now known as Yusuf. He completely walked away from fame and his music career to raise a family and do charity work.

Even as I'm older I always try to remember when dealing with younger people, to never write their feelings off like "oh it's just youth and they'll get over it". Because to young people, what they feel is real. We all remember what it was like to never feel like you're good enough, to feel like nothing quite turns out like you hope for, to feel like you have so much to master that it becomes daunting... and to feel like your worries and frustrations aren't taken seriously. We can also remember that strong sense of breaking free, and thinking "I have to go... I have to get out of here!" I think all parents should listen to this song with their teen kids. I think it's probably the best way to let them know "I know you don't think I understand, but I do.".

So many reactors don't catch on to the fact that Stevens is singing as both the father AND the son in this song. It's refreshing that you two were on to this immediately.

More than a reaction, this was more thoughtful analysis from you Asia and BJ. You are good listeners and good consensus builders. The album this was from (Tea For The Tillerman) was gifted to me by one of my 7th grade teachers. She correctly guessed it would impact me for the rest of my life. I am 62 now and playing it for my grandkids. Thank you.

Cat Stevens/Yusuf Islam (born Steven Demetre Georgiou in London, a.k.a. Steve Adams), Converted to Islam in 1978. Regardless of the name, one of the MOST talented singer-songwriters to affect his generation! This song was recently featured toward the end of the movie "Guardians of the Galaxy," vol.2, 2017, and exposed his talent again to a new and appreciative generation.
