As a member of the Tool Army I need to thank you for diving down the spiral and expanding your enlightenment. That being said, this song has more layers than you think. The syllables used are based on the mathematical pattern known as the Fibonacci sequence which defines(plots) the shape of many things such as sunflower heads to seashells and galaxies. The pattern creates a spiral. The song itself describes letting go of fear and opening your mind to the inner diety that is connected to the collective unconscious(also known as the Akashic record). But thats just one layer and there can be other opinions... look into the phrase " as above, so below"... and metaphysics and philosophy of Carl Jung dealing with alchemy and Gnosticism.

The REAL bomb is when you realize the lyrics themselves are a literal SPIRAL! Specifically the Fibonacci sequence that happens everywhere in nature. From Wikipedia: "[The song lyrics] began linking up to the Fibonacci sequence." The syllables Maynard sings in the first verse follow the first six numbers in the pattern, ascending and descending in the sequence 1-1-2-3-5-8-5-3. "Black (1), then (1), white are (2), all I see (3), in my infancy (5). Red and yellow then came to be (8), reaching out to me (5). Lets me see (3)." In the next verse, Maynard begins with the seventh number of the Fibonacci sequence (13), implying a missing verse in between. He descends back down with the following pattern; 13-8-5-3. "As below so above and beyond I imagine (13). Drawn beyond the lines of reason (8). Push the envelope (5). Watch it bend (3)." The second verse adds the missing line to complete the sequence; "There is (2), so (1), much (1), more that (2), beckons me (3), to look through to these (5), infinite possibilities (8)." 1-1-2-3-5-8-5-3-2-1-1-2-3-5-8-13-8-5-3. ...SPIRAL OUT!!!

Also, Maynard grew up in the Michigan/Ohio area, and the most common racial interactions were between black people and white people. It wasn’t until he moved to LA and the SouthWest that “red” people and “yellow” people first “reached out to him” and “made him be.” Maynard’s philosophies have since been rooted more in Far East and Native American ideologies.

"Black and White are all I see, in my infancy, red and yellow then came to be, reaching out to me, lets me see." Black and white are rudimentary. The colors of the electromagnetic spectrum are photons of light reflected off of mediums and based off of their wavelengths is how our brains depict them. So it's basically the steps in how we visualize the universe. We learn more and more about it every decade. And the title Lateralus is based off of lateral thinking. The way that Einstein developed the theory of relativity was by picturing himself on a photon traveling at the speed of light and what would occur. So Maynard is implying that in order for us to resolve the mysteries of the universe we must think outside the box.

About the colors and infancy: that's a metaphor from literal infancy and the journey of the soul. At the start of our journey, we only have black, until a moment of white. Then red and yellow reach our minds (the first two colors the eye perceives of the visible light spectrum). This also parallels our soul's growth from a naive binary world of absolutes to a universe of complexity and possibilities. It really sets the stage for the entire rest of the song's meaning.

Your takes on this song are spot on. Here's what I think REALLY makes Tool so great. You guys and KKdogMedia both dropped your reactions to this song today, and both had different interpretations as the song went. Both were just as accurate as the other, and at the end both conclusions were on the same wavelengths. Tool can put you in a trance, take you on a journey, teach a message, and everyone's experience is different but everyone comes back to Earth on the same point. Great reactions and analysis, guys! I showed up for Tom, I'm here for TooL, but I stayed for A&B. Spiral out!

Several of the images used in this song derive from the alchemical works of Carl Jung, who sourced many of his theories (including archetype theory into which the anima and shadow are subsumed) from the late alchemical works of the 17th and 18th century. The use of color imagery appears to have manifold meaning. Firstly, the specific colors used (black, white, red and yellow) designate the phases of the alchemical transformation: the melanosis (blackening), leukosis (whitening), iosis (redenning) and the xanthosis (yellowing). The latter two colors (red and yellow) were later synthesized into the aurora consurgens or fusion of red/yellow as explicated in alchemical works attributed to Thomas Aquinas: the dawning of the true self. I'm not sure of the actual scientific validity of the infant theory of visual perception as expounded on in 'the giver,' but I do know that these colors attributed to the work of the alchemist's predates any possible scientific speculation by several millinea. Magnum opus (alchemy)

I'm a Tool fan for sure, mainly for their music. However, their lyrics are fantastic as well making for a deeply rewarding band to get into. Maynard has developed a lot as a human being and could only have done so, IMO, by sharing and expressing with others, without fear. He was clearly angry and ventilating a lot lyrically with the first two albums. However, from there on, it was not so much about him, but more about humanity, a reality check for us all from his own eyes, and also encouragement. I see that you have both heard his message in this song and loved listening to your sincere sharing of your own interpretations. What a breath of fresh air!!! Asia and BJ, continue to be just who you are and not falter. This is Maynard's prescription. Tool's song 'Ticks and Leeches' from that same album 'Lateralus' was made in response to their record label wanting more of a type of music from them, rather than what they would want to make as a group. Of course, Maynard will have none of it and let them know what he felt of that sort of demand in 'Ticks and Leeches'. He refuses to be a sellout. Hopefully, you'll listen and react to more of Tool.

The title of the song came from the concept of lateral thinking. Viewing problems through a new light. The first verses show a progression of colors reflecting the birth of an individual, a universe, or a thought. The singer pulled the colors from aboriginal creation stories which played a heavy role. As well, the colors Black, White, Red, and Yellow represent the 4 color changes in Medieval Alchemy to create the philosophers stone in order.

Yeah, definitely I think the black and white and red and yellow line is like, when you’re young everything is either good or bad… and as you grow you learn that nothing is ever truly black and white but has shades of gray and there are many influences on the decisions you make and people who do bad things aren’t necessarily evil or bad, but they were making that choice for a reason… and people who do good things aren’t always selfless and doing good things for the right reasons, they may be doing it so they look good and then they get some benefit as well, which is manipulative. So we go from this solid everything is good or bad view of the world to a more nuanced one where there’s room for interpretation and mistakes.

The fact that BJ said evolved, he was spot on. I once watched a program in which they described the evolution of the eye. The first creatures to develop eyes saw only light and dark. Black and white. We then developed the ability to see red and yellow. Blood and sunlight. That's the theory at least. It's a cool concept to think about. But to me the first few lines are talking about how every thing was good or evil, positive or negative, etc. But then as "red and yellow then came to be", he realized the lines can be blurred... Not everything can be defined as one or the other... There are variables, tangents, other forces that come into play as you start viewing the bigger picture.

The great thing about most Tool songs is that the meaning is not readily available, leaving the audience to make the meaning. Also, understand that Tool's lyrics are treated not as an out-in-front element of their music. The lyrics and singing are treated as a part of the whole, another instrument. Tool forces you to listen different. Now, regarding these lyrics, much has been made about the Fibonacci Sequence, which determines it's structure, and thematically to the meaning. Regarding the verse lyrics "Black then white are all I see in my infantcy," black and white may be interpreted as "splitting," in that things that you like are seen as good and thing that you don't are seen as bad, a metaphor for dualistic thinking. Red and yellow are the colors of danger and caution, the two colors we are able to see best in the daylight. Thus, the colors, from my perspective, represent and evolution of early thinking from split black and white morality to a more evolved seen of danger and caution during one's "infantcy," which ties into the rest of the song's theme.

Babies are born colorblind. After awhile they learn to see color. I also think he's referring to how the world is not black and white. All societal issues have shades of gray. But mentioning black, white, red, and yellow, he could also be hinting at colors of skin, but he left out brown. Back in 2001, this wasn't really realized fully. But I do like the sentiment. Great video ya'll.

This song is about an intense drug trip. Push the envelope, watch it bend, swing on a spiral of our divinity. Its about spiraling out into your own mind as you shed your ego and strip your human side away you become pure inspiration itself. Its a great song but it becomes a beautiful song when you listen to it from the stand point of a break through drug experience.

This is one of tool's best songs. its hard to pick one song as their best. the way they used math to create this song, the opening to the song. the lyrics all of it is insane . something you would expect from the band. This in my opinion is the only band today that would never be a band if you took any one of the band members out of the band. it just would never be the same . from Danny's insane drumming to the insane guitar work from Adam and Jason's base lines and of course Maynard's voice, time signatures and their creative lyrics. this band just makes people think and feel more so than most other bands and especially live. thanks for showcasing this incredible band and this song

Talking in front of people and facing that fear, is just like embracing the random. The random being, you don't know how people will react to you, but fuck it, embrace it! It's a pleasure watching you two turn the reaction to the song into a solid understanding of the conversation that needs to happen after these kinds of songs.

Babies literally can't see color for the first few days. Their eyes are still developing. It's not a metaphor. In time they slowly begin to see colors. Like red and yellow.

If You don't know, this song (and album) follows the Fibbonacci sequences. (The number + the next sequential number = the next number. ) 0, 1, 1, 2, 3, 5, 8, 13, 21,....ect. Leonardo Fibbonacci believes he stumbled on "God's mathmatical equation for life" (all living things follow this pattern) The album in backward numerical order of the Fibbonacci sequence, makes one long song. (The end of the tune of #13 is the beginning of the song of #8 and so on!) 🤯🤯🤯

Human beings are almost instinctually obligated to like this song... from the time signature, to the length of the song to even the syllables all following and bouncing around within the "Fibonacci Sequence" which is a set of numbers that starts with a one or a zero, followed by a one, and proceeds based on the rule that each number... its the Golden Ratio... its every spiral you've ever seen from a rose to a snail shell...

When it comes to black and white and red and yellow etc., of course he’s using them metaphorically but research shows that babies don’t see color until a few months after they’re born. So you’re supposed to introduce black-and-white toys, and then at a certain age (whatever months old) you start introducing red toys and yellow toys and then you add blue and other colors. So black-and-white in my infancy, red and yellow then came to be. Again of course he’s using this metaphorically because this song is about so much more.

I have played music for over 20 years, I have been in a signed band, I have toured the country I live in (UK) and played live locally a lot, I have recorded, mixed , mastered music, and I can't front, performing scares the shit out of me LOOL. I play guitar so i have a guitar to hide behind. Vocals is even more anxiety inducing (I used to sing as well but I was always playing guitar so I could still hide behind it in a way). Also I think vocals are so personal because its your own body making the sound that it makes it that bit extra nerve jangling. I cant be a singer, even though I can sing lool being the focal point , at least playing guitar I can turn side ways or look at band mates, lool, or focus on my playing a little, as long as I'm moving with the music you are still giving the crowd energy, but vocalists have to really engage all the time and that in of itself , is a skill, even before you get to the actual singing. So I don't blame you Asia for being anxious of performing (I think it's actually pretty common even with some really big artists)

It’s about seeing beyond the obvious, and opening your mind to the nether regions….It’s not “stop & go”, it’s not “this or that”, it’s not “right or wrong”……..When you expand your mind, you begin to see the “layers” in between…..That’s when you add the metaphorical “color” to your life……..Kind of like the first time you added honey to your tea….At that point, there’s no going back, and your mind is refreshed.
