The house with the building material exposed is called 塗墼厝, which is built with mud bricks, with straws mixed in. There is another kind of traditional building in Beipu called 箅仔壁, which is built with mats weaved together with strips of bamboo.

4:58, some of the wall, could be made of mixture of mud, and rice/rice husk/leaf, not kidding. Taoyuan county used to have lots of these old buildings, this is due to steel, concrete were rare. Luckier and more wealthier will get good quality clay- clay which you make kitchenware/china with, otherwise just ordinary mud

The fruit looks like 'kedondong' in Malaysia and Indonesia. It has a very sour taste and is usually blended into kedondong drink. Local Chinese in Malaysia calls it as 沙梨。
@AsiaHikelopedia3 жыл бұрын
Yes. I think that's what it is (according to some locals who commented)

@@AsiaHikelopedia Buah Kedondong is very common here in Malaysia. Most families plant a tree of buah kedondong at the backyard of the house or by the roadside. We pound the fruit together with dry anchovies and chlli or blend the fruits to make juice.

15:36 number 3 highway, through Hakka settlements in Taoyuan, Hsinchu and Miaoli has alot of these washing places, and they wash everything, from laundry, to fruit/vege/food and yes the water are fresh thats why you get to see shrimp :) I used to catch them for fun :) there are eels present as well. Since 20 years ago, they starting to preserved these washing area, particularly a lot around Longtan District in Taoyuan

Hi Richard! That's a great video on the rustic town 北埔, full of historical information. That's why I enjoyed your videos so much. Thanks. Oh I have to point out something that you mention at 1:55 of your video. You mentioned the cooperation between 漢人 and 客人. I think you are referring to 福建人 and 客人。漢人 actually refers to the major ethnic group of the Chinese that comprises of various dialects groups including 福建人 (the main dialect group of Taiwan's Chinese), 客人, 潮州人, etc.

Lol....I remember number 3 highway, the highway link Kaohsiung/Pingtung via the mountain area through to Taipei that go right through Beipu, it's a lot easier now with freeway there, number 3 highway back in mid/early 80s was horribly windy, dad used to drive along this highway from Taoyaun to Hsinchu via Beipu and I used to get car sick and throw up along the way, somehow that difficult path and not so easily accessible has helped preserved the buildings in area from over development.
