Asian here, can attest it's true. They've only ever given me a direct compliment maybe once in my life: when they told me they're proud of my job at a foreign company and how much I'm earning... before telling me that I sound miserable and that I need to find a career I actually dont loathe. I love them and am grateful for the work ethic they've instilled, but a strict childhood do be causing much baggage for the kid. Still don't know what to chat about with them because I've kept my life private for so long for fear of criticism.

Pro Tip: you buy that foaming soap one time. When you run out you take 50% water and 50% cheap hand soap of a similar scent. If you thin down the regular soap it will work in those dispensers. Now you have the status symbol soap of the ritch family with the price tag of the zest guy. Jimmys dad would be proud. What a deal!

Lol, I'm a white lady who is *frugal* and when I moved to California and wandered into an Asian supermarket I was all about it. Asian supermarkets are the best, right after Hispanic ones, my top choice! I'm from a pretty Hispanic area to the point where I can read and understand Spanish pretty well even though I don't speak the language. I went into a market in town just looking for some of the Mexican chips that are harder to find at a regular grocery store and I was in complete shock. They managed to fit an entire grocery store into a space the size of a small barber shop. And I looked at the prices they had and they weren't bad either. Honestly Walmart is probably about the same cost but then you gotta deal with walking around the whole store and waiting in line for an hour because they have one register open. Same place with the European deli in town. It's a little bigger of a building but has an entire deli, bakery, liquor section, produce section plus regular canned/ bagged items you'd normally find at the store. Now I understand how people's grandparents are able to shop exclusively at places like that.

I do like his mom with a slight change, my cousin is a "foamy soap" type of person, every time you use the soap it smells like you're in the middle of a fruit orchard or you're on a beach, then one day I asked if I could have the bottle when she was done. Realized that all the foaming action is due to how the soap dispenser is engineered, so all get is that big jug of refill softsoap from Costco then refill the bottle 5:1 water-soap, and BAM instant foam soap dispenser! Sure the smell it has is that of "soap" but I can feel like a prince even though my paycheck is that of a pauper.

On the "organic" front, I was in an undergraduate Biology class at Cal State, Northridge about 30 years ago, which would have been about the time when all this "organic" stuff started trending. My teacher said, "Hey, you guys. Listen up. Let me save you some trouble and some money. Scientifically, organic just means carbon-based, ok? Anything that includes carbon at the molecular level is, therefore, organic. So save your time and money, and don't buy organic." And the teacher wasn't even Asian. Hah! So good. I am, however, going to forward this to my daughter and her boyfriend who happens to be Korean to see if it is accurate. Good stuff. Thanks. : )

@@jamesmcinnis208 I was taught to always say it growing up because “you don’t know when you’lol see them again/it might be the last time.” To be honest, I also think this is slightly problematic reasoning but now I still want to hear it every night before bed.

@@thenightskywatchingoverme It's a valid thought, and the number of people I've lost in the midst of petty disagreements seems to bear it out. Because I didn't grow up saying it, the phrase carries disproportionate emotional weight. My solution has been to find people to whom I can say it in another language.

@@thenightskywatchingoverme In a way it makes sense. Yeah I see how it can get repetitive and annoying but you never know if you'll get the chance to say these words to that person again. So don't take it for granted

I’m not Asian but I grew up in an Asian community and I can see all my family’s friends in what Jimmy is saying.

As an Asian, I took all hand soap from hotels from my business trip. Totally free, the best deal.

Asian parents don’t necessarily spell things out but they care deeply and will be there when things get hard. My mum told me she loved me, maybe not as often but I always know I’m loved growing up. ❤

10 years ago I was shopping for a new refrigerator. I was looking around. Taking notes and so was this Chinese guy. He asked me...which one is the best? I said...if you value your happiness...let you wife pick.
