Yeah, it took Jenny having a child & choosing not to "run away", experiencing being loved & returning it, then realizing it & reaching out to forrest...unfortunately a bit too late. But, you're probably the best person I've seen that picked up on everything throughout the movie. Great Reactions tho! (Oh, an OCS is Officer Candidate School. People with high potential/College grads groomed for high ranking positions & jobs. Plus, my guess why Forrest didn't go pro-football was that the Army Recruiter got to him 1st. If a manager/agent wanted to represent him & got to him 1st, plus Forrest's very impulsive, he definitely would've gone that route)

I believe it was because she felt that she wasn't worth being loved. Or that no one would truly love her. I mean, she was treated badly by men (except Forrest) her whole life. Her father abused her. I imagine her boyfriend in college took that picture of her and submitted it to Playboy magazine, thus getting her kicked out of school. Wesley hit her. And whoever she got involved with after that, got her into drugs and also hit her. Forrest is the only one who showed her what a loving and proper life is. He was the only man who truly loved her. I'm glad she did realize that at the end. ... Yea, it's because the army recruiter got to him first 😂 He probably said, "OK" and joined the army right there and then.

I can't lie...I shit on her for decades... Until not long ago (literally yesterday) when I realized she did it all for her son... When she realized she was dying, she instigated pretty much the main plotline to ensure he'd be taken care of... Also realized it played right into the theme of her not being able to love herself enough to do anything for herself... All the chances she had to REALLY take advantage of Forrest, like leeching off of him as soon as he hit some money, she didn't... She was a single mother for years yet never reached out to the father until she got the doomed diagnosis... But she did not reach out because she learned some humility, she reached out for her son. So, she could not love herself, possibly did not "love" Forrest in that romantic way, but she was "sick" and knew it was inevitable that there'd be a point where she would not be able to take care of Jr, and she ACTUALLY loved him, hands down and no argument there... Her friend had to help drive Jr back n forth to daycare, yet never before the diagnosis did she bother him for money...I think by that point she KNEW she could EASILY manipulate Forest much more than she had... All I'm saying is I shit on her for like 99% of all this time since the film came out and I saw it in theaters and I got it wrong... You can be angry she pushed him into a marriage, but the intent behind it wasn't what you may have thought

Glad you liked it. It’s interesting to see how this movie is received in other cultures. It’s pretty much a synopsis of US history, post WWII. Forrest and Jenny are the Yin and Yang of baby boomers. The sound track is the music of my youth. To some of your questions: Million Dollar Wound. It doesn’t kill you, but it gets you out of combat. GI stands for Government Issue. It became a euphemism for enlisted personnel. Jenny had hepatitis C contracted from shared hypodermic needles.

I like the video, but in my opinion, you left out the best scene in the entire movie. When Forrest asks Jenny, "Is he smart, or is he like me...?" That scene is absolutely gut wrenching. It's the first time we realize that Forrest is WELL AWARE of how different he is from others and how others judge him. He finds out he has a son and missed the first 3 years of his life, and his immediate reaction is concern for his child. Just an amazing scene all around.

I do agree. That's why I knew he would be a great dad. I actually felt that he was well aware of many things, including his uniqueness. The scene that I can think of is when he thought, "I guess Lieutenant Dan figured there's some things you just can't change. He didn't want to be called crippled, just like I didn't want to be called stupid." He may be different, but that doesn't stop him from being a loving and caring friend / father.

Dude, I'm paralyzed from the neck down and it's fine. Biggest difference is... I don't multitask. OCS is officer candidate school for enlisted to become officers. Cleaning the floor with a toothbrush is punishment, not janitorial duty. In the 60s it was common to ask strangers for rides or hitchhike. Which is worse? Losing your glasses or your contacts? Jenny had HIV/AIDS. In the early 80s it took them quick. For people familiar with it, it was foreshadowed when it showed her using needles with other people. It's a common way to pass it to others.

The older girl on the school bus wearing the red and white dress is Tom Hanks daughter Elizabeth. Tom said he based his speech pattern on the boy who played him as a kid because he was from that area of Alabama. There was going to be a sequel where Forrest was raising his son who contracted aids from Jenny and Forrest was going to meet Princess Diana and be near the Oklahoma bombing and other 90’s events but the script showed up the day before 9/11 and Tim Hanks and the director decided the movie had no meaning anymore. Most of the crowd at that anti war rally were not really there, they basically used computers to make the crowd look larger, they basically copied and pasted the people who were there. Jenny was so damaged by the abuse she suffered as a kid that she thought she didn’t deserve happiness and she probably thought she would hurt Forrest more if he stuck around.

This movie was a huge break through in movie magic, and it pushed green screen technology to the limit and brought it to a new height. They put Tom Hanks into actual footage of the era and even interacting with them. I don't just mean talking to a stand-in, I mean they blended him in like never before, making it look like he shook their hand and they change the lip movement and sound cutting and made it look so real for the time. Now, the rally, you had it 50% right, they did use a green screen and only (I think) a few hundred people. They started with them up close in front of a screen, then they moved every one and the green screen back and re-shot the scene with the new position. They did this over and over until the had filled the rally area.

As one Asian person to another.... I'd like you to polish up on your deductive reasoning lol..."compulsory" = mandatory military service = the military draft. Nearly every Asian country has mandatory military service or a neighbor who does, c'mon man! Back then, they instituted a draft of men over 18, with some getting deferments for this reason and that, but for the most part, few elected to go to war but Forrest did. The big student protests were over the youth of that era both disagreeing with the war overall morally and their vitriol for the draft... We in the states tend to not like to be forced into anything Oh and she's--meaning Jenny--most likely a drug addict and was in recovery when she just kept "sleeping"... In a sense you were correct that she felt "safe" but it was prolly just good ol' withdrawals... Coke and heroin were THE drugs of choice even back then (that was actually it's heyday in terms of it's emergence of widespread use)

Yes, it would make sense that her "sleep" was due to withdrawal. It didn't cross my mind because heroin withdrawal is usually accompanied with agitation, shaking, vomiting, etc. But if it was cocaine, then her fatigue and sleepiness makes more sense. Thanks for sharing, Sizzlak 😊

7:02 In some ways it's the perfect place, he is told exactly what to do. He couldn't be an officer and make decisions or give orders to others, but as a Private he is in exactly the right place. I don't think military service was compulsory, but he needed to earn money first, before he could go into shrimping. 25:54 I think Jenny thinks she's 'damaged goods' and that Forrest could do much better, she doesn't understand that he will never love anyone else, even while she stumbles around from one abusive relationship to another.

He fit in surprisingly well. He can't make decisions or give orders, but he sure is disciplined. So he proved me wrong there 😂 I agree with you, that's how she saw herself 😢 I'm glad she had Forrest Jr. He changed her world.

At the time of the movie all men could be drafted into the army unless you had a exemption. Forest was exempt because he was in college, after he graduated he was no longer exempt. That was why so many were against that Unpopular war. You could be made to go. The college exemption was removed I be leave about 1969 which made all men over18 subject for the draft. The man at the protest in the flag shirt is Abby Hofman a college professor

So after 1969, every man over 18 has to be drafted into the army even if they're still studying in college? 😯

@@henryellow every male over 18 was electable for the draft unless you had a deferment. At 18 you were required to register for the draft by law and had to carry a draft card with your status on it . 1A being the most elegable, 4F was a medical deferment. Burning you draft card was a big thing at protests, punishable by arrest and jail. In 1971 when I was 18 and in college there were three of us living in a house , all of us up for the draft. In Washington DC they they would have 366 pieces of paper in big tub, and would draw out one at time . they would draw January 1 first, then January 2 ext. They were taking numbers 1 thru 10 that year for the draft my number when draw was 361, second roommate got 251, third roommate got 8. He had to report for a physical but did not get drafted he had a bad ankle. You could avoid the war if drafted by joining the National Guard.

Looking at the flyer he got, I always thought Forrest was led into volunteering (Hence why he thought he might have made a mistake = signing up).

Psalm 15: of David. LORD, who may abide in your tent? Who may dwell on your holy mountain? Whoever walks without blame, doing what is right, speaking truth from the heart; Who does not slander with his tongue, does no harm to a friend, never defames a neighbor; Who disdains the wicked, but honors those who fear the LORD; Who keeps an oath despite the cost, lends no money at interest, accepts no bribe against the innocent. Whoever acts like this shall never be shaken.

Why overthinking a movie an ask questions like "couldnt he get an athletes dehree after college?" ...well yeah. Gump went professional athlete for 8 years, retired because of back problems, end of movie. I hope you never watch terminator and realize the time travel is a paradox and question it aswell. Movies are to be watched..not questioned how it could end otherwise...arrgh..my pet peeve..sorry :)
