Unless they are in a place where there are koreans or in a korean community...it is very difficult. If they are in living in a place where there are no Koreans....many girls just can't handle it. Going out to do errands and everyday things...are very depressing. The service and kindness is not there like Korea. Always experience leaving somewhere feeling treated not the way as expected. Westerners always criticize korean plastic surgery but UN statistics says differently. South Korean is not included in the listh which do the plastic surgery the most. however, so many journals say about so many patients in plastic surgery hospital in Korea. Most of them are Chinese and south east asians. My friend who worked as broker earned money 10000 dollers per month, bringing foreigner customers. As someone who started watching Kdramas I could say yes being exposed to S Korea through there has made me have unrealistic expectations in the past as it related to relationships, love and feelings. But the more I got exposed to other types of South Korean material such as the entertainment industry (Kpop) or the dramas that often highlight social issues, such as seniority dynamics,Corruption, low wages, exploitation of workers, models, idols ect. Or when I watch the Asian Boss videos it has really opened my eyes. I think it's normal for one to have idealistic ideas at first about a foreign country but you should try to learn and inform yourself . Now I still love Kdramas, but I don't overlook the reality of the country and the difficulties people go through. I enjoy Kpop groups while also keeping in mind how they are overworked and sometimes not paid. Living in Korea require a certain type of personality and knowledge to survive there and the conception of not being the best will be emphasized. As a Korean high school student born and raised in Korea, I find everyone in Korea thinking 'competition&ranking is very natural, indispensible, efficient because it enables to sort out the most competent' .And some think it is fair enough, so they urge younger people to work hard to the extreme ( due to the experience of past success by extreme effort ) saying "you can do it if you work just a little bit harder." This made sense in the past(when it was able for individual to success from almost nothing) but as the society have developed and became firm, 'Many drops make a shower' became nonsense, nowdays. The phenomenon that fortune of parents descends to their children discourages many of young people in Korea. This kind of change and the lack of empathy also became one the causes of the generation conflict. Anyway, I think that the reason many Koreans are depressed is not only extreme competition, but also the social justification and encouragement to the competition. I could sense people, especially conservative people here unconsciously think 'if only we can develop competence of country, firm, individual, or anything else, some inhuman things are ok." I think this helps to understand some issues in korea.

If you think about it, not really, New Zealand has half the population of New York City, and located at one of the most remote region of the globe. I currently live in NZ and have been since my family immigrated here decades ago. Yes NZ can get a bit boring, we are not really any where near the forefront of technology, but it doesn't mean it's a place that young people can't thrive, succeed and live happily. Each country have industries that are more developed than others and NZ specializes more in dairy, agriculture, food and I guess you could say tourism. If you are a young person with a drive to succeed in some other sectors like the creative sector eg: film, yes there arn't many opportunities here for that and you will probably need to move abroad to further your career. NZ is no where near perfect but the people are generally more genuine, the government cares a fair bit about people's welfare, there isn't really a culture of over-working and most people prioritize a good work-life balance. The environment and scenery is great although we should be working harder to protect it, there is good quality food available and it is generally safer compared to other countries. Most people in the world do not have the financial ability to just pack up and leave their home country, every country has it's flaws and we could all spend more energy in finding out how we can make our own countries better rather than criticizing it or fantasizing about other countries.

For me, personally, I thought the guy in the glasses at 3:25 gave the best answer. Just because you, yourself, can't adapt to the society that you were born in, doesn't mean that you'll succeed in another country when you move there. And just because you do succeed in another country doesn't mean that South Korea, as a whole, is a bad country as well. I know A LOT of Koreans here in LA who moved here for the "American Dream" and ended moving back to Korea after a couple of years because they couldn't find their success here as well. So it really depends on the person whether he/she will succeed in life. Some people have to work extra hard for it and some people with extraordinary luck can just sail through life. I don't agree with the girl at 7:53 that said that only in Korea you have to work at a big company and such in order to get respect from others, etc. It's the same everywhere you go. I think she isn't very aware of how society is outside of Korea. Even here in the US, it's not all that different. People on top will generally look down on those who are working class or live in poverty.

To me, for example, if you’re a woman and live in a society where women are not treated equally, then you’ll be more successful in a country where women are better treated and given more opportunities than just obey whatever their families or husband wants. Nothing wrong with exploring other countries to see where you’d be the happiest & most productive. Truth is, man is an eternal unsatisfied. "The grass is always greener on the other side of the fence" as we say. And the university entrance exams are notoriously difficult. I thought A levels were hard but boy I was wrong. The things they do is much more advanced and difficult. I realised that our education system in England is not competitive and the standards are way too low. the truth of the matter is that koreans have this mentality that one has to be perfect or #1 in terms of looks, job status, education, etc. these unrealistic expectations make it super difficult to live/survive in korea bc although they don't like being judged themselves, they can't help perpetuating those expectations bc they are ingrained into them since childhood. the education system and the job market is especially cutthroat; it's not good enough to be smart, get good grades, and work hard while sleeping less. the "average" korean student would be able to get into a prestigious college in the US and do well, but that's the case in korea. that's why they call it hell because no matter how hard they work and smart they are, nothing's guaranteed for them unless they have special connections or come from a wealthy background.

This is my personal opinion: Before someone decides to move to a foreign country they should try to visit and do an extensive research on the culture. The culture in Korea is VERY different than western countries. What they call manners, for us it's like a wth? Things that for us are somewhat daily life, like getting on an elevator and saying good morning, they don't do that. But then you see that if they're drinking alcohol and there is an age difference the younger person has to turn away so they can drink. Even though these are small things, it's still things. The lifestyle is different as well. For me (I live in the U.S. and have lived in Europe) I consider it's more laid back and relaxed. When I went to Korea I noticed they live a much faster life. Looks like they're always late for something. I liked it for vacation but personally I just couldn't live there. Just thinking about the heat wave this year and not once could I wear a spaghetti shirt (since I was with my husband family) was awful.

Spain is a peaceful place to live, however we have the same problem with getting jobs and a comfortable lifestyle. Many people struggle to reach the end of the month with their salaries. I am used to living in a country where violence is something normal, where I can’t go out wearing a skirt without being cat called and I can’t stay out for too long, where most people don’t respect rules and prefer the easy way out. I am not compatible with my country’s way of thinking, and in Korean culture I found a lot of things that I *do* empathize with. I’ve been to Korea before and, even with my high expectations, Korea managed to surpass every single one of them. Ofc there are bad things, but (just like one of the interviewees said:) I marvel at the differences we have. If I were an educator, I'd be sharing these videos with my classes and engaging in discussions afterwards.

For sure korea is one of the best country in the world. But for me it is difficult to live in thier because of thier beauty and education stardard. I am not saying that its a bad thing. But a person like me will get pressurised easily. Anyways i love korea and its culture.

Hmm, I’m considering living in SK just for the experience of living overseas, and the beauty standards/education standards are very forced. Luckly I have a strong mindset so I don’t think it will affect me too badly

Listening to this makes me feel grateful I live where I live. Welfare is good, healthcare is affordable, there isn't too much competitiveness and a friendly environment for people to succeed. The country is pretty green and eco-friendly. I like my country other than the mass influx of immigrants coming in to the country, making it hard to sustain the welfare and care for the existing people in our country.

My family has hosted 2 Korean boys as exchange students. The second one we have had for 3 years. He is like our own son. We have learned a lot about the cultural differences. Though I think there are many beautiful aspects to Korean culture it is definitely not without its weaknesses. I agree mostly with the people you interviewed on the cultural differences. I also can sympathize with the concerns they have. I hope the younger generations can change the working culture there to create more positive opportunities and results for the future. Working hard is honorable but I think you lose the honor if you cant be with your family as a result. I think the high pressure in their society is too much and it's not healthy to live that way constantly. I have seen this behavior in our Korean son so I know it's real. I admire it but at the same time I think it's too much stress for teenagers. Just my opinion. I love our Korean son though. He is special to us! ❤

I want to go to Korea, not because of kpop or kdrama. What i love about Korea are the culture, scenery, and just how beautiful it is. I am a new Zealand citizen, and i noticed when that lady talked about new Zealand and how much she loves it, i can say even though i was getting tired of the same old things, her words really make me appreciate what nz has. And to never regret where i came from.

The woman at 1:28 said she would emigrate to Switzerland, saying the social welfare and quality of living is good. I am Swiss and live in Switzerland and am in my first year of university (bachelor of medicine). From my point of view there is great social fluidity eg at highschool the children of immigrant parents may be in the same class as those of a millionaire. (Our schools are quite good and if I remember correctly 100chf (~100$) per year from 10-12 grade. School is until 9th grade, from where 70% of students start an apprenticeship and if they want can attend a special university in their field of work or go to a ‘normal’ university after a 1 year course. Those people eg become architects. The other 30% go to school until 12th grade, then graduate. From then on we can apply and go to every university we want in Switzerland (which are very good, somewhere in the top 200 globally). That way those who do not like to study do not have to too much. University is about 800$ per semester (plus train ticket or apartment in town) but it is easy to apply for a Stipendium (where you get money from the government depending from how much your parents earn, how many siblings you have, if you need an apartment etc) I cannot say much for the job world but it seems to be good as well, there are not many unemployed and people seem to be happy. However it is quite expensive and sometimes takes a while until a new, lesser known product is on the market. And due to Switzerland not being in the EU eg some products on amazon can’t be shipped to Switzerland. However there is a lot of nature ( I live 10-15 mins by foot away from the train station from where it is 1/2 h to get to most big cities and yet I live right next to a river and am inside a forest within a few minutes. As for languages (I live in the German speaking part) I know Swiss German (which is not German and only spoken/used on social media), German (we have to read and write everything in it and have to speak it at school), English (usually a b2/c1 is reached by 12th grade) and French (b1/2 is reached, it s more difficult and less popular). So yes I am fluent in 3 languages and can speak a 4th. So yes, I am happy to live in Switzerland

I lived in the USA, Canada, Korea, and Japan, if anyone asks me negative things about these countries I lived in, I can tell them for hours. Every country has good and bad, if you lived in only one country you will think another country is better but once you move there and live there for while you will realize there are also bad things. The glass seems always greener in the other side.

I agree I've met people who ask where I'm from and when I answer with "America", 8 times out of 10 they'll say "wow I want to visit" 9 times out of 10 I respond with "it isn't that great here" and vice versa. it's very interesting to see people say and the feel the same about a country I've been wanting to visit for awhile.

People always have this dream of living where it's safe because safety it's what a human being want in their life as well as the stability of a nice well paid work. For the perspective of an european Switzerland is the dream country, together with Germany. For an asian is Japan and South Korea. Here we can see the koreans being unsatisfied of their own contry because they never experienced other type of life. However, in compare to other asian country they are one of the most developed and safe. So, in the end we will be never satisfied until we won't find our own happiness, our own place in the world, til we can finally say "oh, that is how it works in this country. Now i know" because we experienced other lifes and we can stay in peace with ours.

I’ve travelled to different places and I’m still young and don’t really know anything about the work world or the adult life. But my view of things as a young person is that the human species is almost never satisfied with what it has (even when it has enough to survive) I went to rich and poor places and people in poor places tend to share more, laugh more, dream more but still have complaints (which is normal) In my everyday life I see people being tired of running, getting up everyday to go to work, come back home, watch tv and start everything over again the next day. They forget to laugh, to enjoy their rest time that they barely have or just like me using it to be on their phones to watch what KZbin vids about what society thinks ... . I’ll do say that I’m satisfied with my life but I’ll admit that I do complain way to much, while I have everything I need in my possession. That’s only my thought after all and my way of thinking (+ I’ve visited Korea and I lived a korean host family for a while, living a little bit of the korean lifestyle and I do speak korean and I can say that I loved i there but not to the extend of wanting to live their forever .. it’s even better when you speak the la gauge their as a (dark skinned) foreigner)

I'm from Germany and interested in Korea. I look at the country from all sides. Never been there. I watch documentaries and vlogs. Also critical ones. So the answers didn't surprise me at all. And I agree with the guy with the orange/blond hair. Only a few on the top of sociaty enjoy a good life. I've heard often about the insane competition mentality of koreans. And poverty of the old people. All of that exists also here but I think not as much as there.

@manatiluna6 жыл бұрын
@@arielgonzalez9993 I'd say it has a good social welfare system and great health care. But it is getting harder to find appartments which are affordable. And even with a good education it is hard to get a job. Here are so many teachers who are taxidrivers. Just to give you an example. And I have the impression that racism and hate against foreighners is increesing. Except if you are white and an academic with money. But that is my personal opinion. Other then that I love the mild climate and nature. And following the rules is quite important here. It makes me feel secure.
@Smiuley6 жыл бұрын
I'm from Germany, as well and I really appreciate your view on Germany... Normally, you would read only extreme opinions. It's mostly "Germany is taken over by immigrants, you can't go out without being raped anymore!!!" Your opinion is more neutral, though, which is nice :) Teachers who are taxt drivers, though? Never heard about that, to be honest. Where do you live? I think, there are enormous regional differences...
@manatiluna6 жыл бұрын
@@Smiuley Ich bin aus Berlin. Das mit den taxifahrenden Lehrern ist nicht neu, und ist nur ein Beispiel dafür, dass ein akademischer Grad keine Garantie für eine gute Arbeit ist. I'm from Berlin. About the teacher as a taxidriver is not new and just an example for showing that an acadamic grade is not a garanty for a good job anymore.

I am also from Germany. We have a lot of similar problems like the Korean ones that needs to be fixed, eg. discrimination, racism, competition, rent issue and so on. But what I love here is, that we are kinda free. I can go to college almost for free, enjoy health care, take days of in the company when I'm sick and still get paid (mental or physical), I can live with my same sex partner without hiding it and so on
@chrisleneperceval44844 жыл бұрын
I really resonated with what a few of them said. "The grass is greener on the other side" is a wide accepted taboo in every culture. And many people do strive to live in "fantasies" where they think their happiness will be founded! I am a product of that. It's really interesting to hear other people's perspectives that are culturally different from my own and see how we are all so similar! IT'S AMAZING
@djork65184 жыл бұрын
my korean classmates who moved abroad to study also say it’s really competitive. they all seem naturally intelligent or able to pick things up and remember things easier, probably due to their educational system, so they’re at the top of our class. but my smartest friend and our valedictorian said that she would be average in korea, which startled me. many of them don’t want to go back; they continue to look for opportunities to study abroad
@kabitathapa26734 жыл бұрын
The world is competitive. There is no place where there is no any competition. It's a human nature that we only see good in other people things instead of our own.

After the 1997IMF in Korea, All the thing was changed and destroyed. Extreme competitivity in Korea has been since that period. Cuz Plenty of company and system were destroyed by the lack of financial liquidity from too much press of IMF. But anyway, I actually love my country and even though Korea is declining or have a war, I wont avoid it but solve on and fight with it. Cuz My family, friend and whole world is here.

Seeing the question "why foreigners want to live in Korea while Korean want to escape?" twice on Asian Boss, my opinion is that foreigners come to Korea and live here with a different mindset, not much pressure and competition as Korean do so they can fully enjoy all the advantages that Korea brings about...
