Not sure if true but one of my Taiwanese friends said that Taiwan-Japanese relations are good now because when Taiwan was colonized by Imperial Japan, it was under the control of the Imperial Japanese Navy who were more amicable than the Imperial Japanese Army.

Now that is something worth arguing, had jealous SK had the capacity to come up with it. Not just targeting all Japanese randomly. And it's annoying SK think they are Japanese and have a say in Japan politics. I am glad taiwan have sense and logic, no just some emotional rage syndrome.

I think it's important to give some context on Japan's colonization of Taiwan. Japan gained control of Taiwan from China almost 50 years before WW2, and during those first few years they were cruel and made themselves superior over the natives and Han Chinese. Many of those people who experienced the worst of it died decades ago. Japan's goal for Taiwan was probably similar to what they did with Okinawa, to create a Japanese identity in the people over time, they did this by teaching Japanese in schools and building more infrastructure and developing Taiwan. Amongst all the countries and regions Japan had previously colonized, Taiwan definitely gained the most through investments, but that's not to say that they treated all the people well. When Japan left, and Taiwan was handed back to China, you had the civil war and eventually KMT takes control over Taiwan, using Marshall law that lasted nearly 30 years. When KMT first arrived, it was not pretty between the refugees from China and the people who were already living in Taiwan. Taiwan was basically a police state for a few decades, mainlanders were treated better by the government and this caused a lot of clashes where each side would attack one another, I believe these incidents also play a role in how people view Japan, as these incidents were more recent, it held a lasting impression on the people, who had to adapt to the change and overshadowed any mistreatment from Japan. I think these answers from the public are probably very different if you were to ask a Taiwanese who whose family came from China only a one or two generations ago.

There's a famous Taiwanese movie called "City of Sadness" that tells the story of the life of a Taiwanese family as Taiwan went from Japanese rule to KMT rule, and showed how KMT rule in many ways was just colonization and oppression of Taiwanese all over again.

This is a fair summary for those who are not familiar with this part of Taiwanese history. It is also fair to say that the colonial Japanese investments, construction and infrastructure that many Taiwanese say they are grateful for were not made to benefit the Taiwanese. That includes all imperialist colonizers. If there's an exception, I'd like to know. From the Taiwanese perspective, if there are two "evils", one is Japan and the other is (unnamed but we can guess), the former is probably seen as the lesser of the two. But I haven't heard anyone I know in Taiwan outwardly express that, and I wish they would. They're too polite. At the end of the day, people will usually form opinions based on what is useful, beneficial, or convenient to themselves. That's just human nature.

It doesn't surprise me that younger Taiwanese people view Japan positively but the elderly as well does surprise me. I have one uncle still living who was a schoolboy under Japanese occupation in Taiwan. He's now in his 80s. But growing up I never really sensed any anti-Japanese sentiment from my (Taiwanese) family, even from the ones who lived under Japanese occupation. I don't ever remember my grandmother saying anything about the Japanese. So I guess I shouldn't be that surprised.

But the resumption of trade with tropically lush, industrially rich Formosa was a sweet-&-sour business. Formosans complained that the Chinese occupation army was looting stocks, letting crops, refineries, railroads and power plants go to rack & ruin.” “Formosans greeted the few visiting Americans with: "You were kind to the Japanese, you dropped the atom on them. You dropped the Chinese on us!" Thoughtful Chinese on the mainland began to agree with the Formosans. Said Ta Rung Pao, China's counterpart of the New York Times: "Fundamentally speaking, China was not qualified to take over . . . she lacks the men . . . technique . . . commodities . . . capital. She governs, but is inefficient. She takes, but she does not give. This is the government's shame." Most foreign observers in Formosa agreed that if a referendum were taken today Formosans would vote for U.S. rule. Second choice-Japan.” 1949 TIME(the year KMT lost Chinese civil war and escaped to Taiwan）: “In Washington, Formosa assumed an increasing prominence in discussions of future U.S. strategy in Asia. With the help of U.S. sea and air power it could be held against Communist attack. It flanked the line of a possible Communist advance across the South China Sea. But Formosa had its drawbacks as an anti-Communist redoubt governed by Chinese Nationalists. Mostly these boiled down to the simple fact that 6½ million Formosans did not like the Chinese. Last week TIME Correspondent Wilson Fielder cabled this picture of the island in its new, unwanted role:” “At night, electric lights -rare in rural Asia-twinkled from the modest huts of tiny villages. By day many villagers not needed in the fields worked in the small industrial plants that dot the island. Compared to mainland Chinese, the Formosans were well off. Nevertheless they were grumbling. In guarded whispers they spoke of the "good old days" of Japanese rule. The years since V-J day had taken with them much of the sting of iron-fisted totalitarianism. The islanders now remembered how Japan had given , order to their lives, while China had brought them to the brink of chaos. “ “Civilians and soldiers (1,500,000 in number) were refugees from the communism now flooding south across China. They were also a troublesome burden to a people who wanted their island home for themselves.” “Pigs Just Eat. This resentment is grounded partly in the psychology of a colonial people whose standards of living, general educational level and technical proficiency were raised well above the standards of their mainland Chinese brethren. The Japanese, for example, trained 30,000 Formosan doctors, more than the number in all the rest of China. But when the mainland Chinese took over the island, they did not even treat the Formosans as equals, but as "liberated" inferiors. The result is that even thoughtful Formosans now say: "We think of the Japanese as dogs and the Chinese as pigs. A dog eats, but he protects. A pig just eats." Many Formosans want complete independence for their island-to be gained by revolution or any other means. Others talk of "autonomy under a good Chinese government," neither Nationalist nor Communist. A third group favors a U.S. mandate.”

I'm Korean and spent some time studying and working in Taiwan. I learnt so much about Taiwanese history and its relationship with Japan. It was interesting to learn how Taiwan experienced Japanese colonialism completely different to Korea so people's perception of Imperial Japan was quite different as well. I hope we can all work towards a peaceful relationship in the future :)

As a Taiwanese with Taiwan-Japan mixed relatives, my grandparents and relatives can speak Japanese well, especially grandma speaks Japanese better than chinese, they told me when I was little that Japanese government was way better than chinese government in every way, although not everyone thinks so but I think only the elders from the past, who truly experienced both can have honest opinions.

Japanese people are actually ok. The issue is after world war 2, the right winged government was not replaced by the usa because they were against the soviets. As a result, many of the post ww2 leaders of japan were juniors of their ww2 counterpart. Even as recently as 10 years ago, Japan's pm shinzo abe is the grandson of a war criminal. Back in 2012, during one of my many visits to Taiwan, I was in Hualien. A Taiwanese friend took me to a local festival (Just Googled it and think it was the Hungry Ghost Festival). We were making a short film together at that time so we went there with our film camera to experiment with lighting and shutter speed etc. The festival we went to was elaborate where locals played games and distributed food to everyone. They then took out a procession and we started following it. On our way we walked through a small village, where people looked a tad bit different from the Taiwanese I knew. A friend of my friend who happened to be there told me that these people were in fact Japanese who decided to stay back after WW2. The sight was surreal. After so many years I still remember that evening vividly.

Its common thing actully.. US nuked Japan in 1945 And Japan bombed pearl harbor and killed many people in 1941 But after 1950 they have good realationship. You see things can just changed in 5years. But Korean people dont seem to get over their colonial history. As a Korean this part is really sad

It is important to differentiate between the relationship of the people and the countries politics, some of the questions blend them together a bit too much, making some of the answers a two sided sword. Of course nobody trusts politicians, but how the communities hold together (and possibly demand change the politics in favor of their relations) is something else entirely.

Another reason Japanese colonial rule isn't remembered so negatively is because just after the Japanese left dictator Chiang and his KMT army from China came to Taiwan, Chiang's rule to many Taiwanese was seen as just as brutal and unjust as Japanese colonial rule, if not worse, so its more fresh in our minds. In Taiwan there's a saying 狗去豬來; "the dogs left. The pigs came"

Actually, the Japanese were far worse as compared to the early era of the KMT administration. Over 600,000 Chinese and Aboriginal inhabitants of Taiwan lost their lives to the brutal Japanese atrocities. The Tapani and Musha incidents are notable examples.

Most neighboring countries don`t have good relationships and Japan is not an exception. But Japan and Taiwan is different. Taiwan is our ONLY neighboring country that we can call them a friend. That is why most Japanese think Taiwan is important to us. That is why we do not want Taiwan to be part of China because if Taiwan becomes part of China we lose our only neighboring friend.

I can feel what u said. I live in both place long time. I think it’s come from media and education. In Taiwanese education which wrote by period of Kuomintang occupied,Japan help to build the island in the history, and the mainland China is a place need to be liberate by ROC.（ In Chinese civil war，Kuomintang occupied taiwan island ，while CCP occupied mainland. So In other words, China is still in a civil war between the two parties.） But now Taiwanese all know it’s impossible win if PROC and ROC has war. So their ruling party DPP use the way Anti-China policy to get more voter. From the video the interviewee said In War II, Japan use Taiwan as the back supply station to attack China. U can feel something about their relationship. And in most of Chinese memories, the history of Japan invades China is really bad.

As a Taiwanese, I am very interested in the "Pro- Japan" vibe, too. Here are some experience and opinion. My family members are all very pro Japan because this is what we have been taught as a kid. (My great grand paretns lived in Japan for over 20 years) So I was a pro Japan guy for a long period of time. However, as I get older and has traveled more and meet more people from different countries, I think that the way we think of Japan is too narrow. The media is a big part of this mind set because most of the news about Japan is relatively positive. People in Taiwan like Japan because everyone likes Japan. It is just a trend. I still like Japan and is still one of my favorite countries, I have lots of Japanese friends that will share their actual culture and more importantly their "mind-set" with me and not just anime and subculture. So in conclusion, I hope that Taiwanese people can have better critical thinking skills and not just follow what the media says.

Don’t forget Taiwanese government was ruled under KMT for 50 years. KMT is from China and it hates Japan. However the most people of Taiwan like Japan out of comparison. It can’t be fooled from the people’s experiences. Taiwanese people were taught to hate Japan from 1945 to 1990s, but failed. Why?

@@ns-4438 As long as Japan don't come clean proactively like what the Germans did, most countries that were invaded by them will hold those negative views. The annual visit by their political leaders to the Yasukuni Shrine (paying respect to class A,B,&C war criminal) is another sensitive topic. Even the past 2 Japanese emperors never visited that Shrine for some reason. Also the names of thousands of men from Taiwan and Korea killed while serving with imperial forces are also recorded at Yasukuni. Some relatives want their names removed coz this brands them as collaborators against their own countrymen.

I'm Japanese. I love Taiwan and Most of Japanese ( I think 99% of Japanese) love Taiwan. Taiwan has always been helping Japan, like March 11th 2011 earthquake. But Taiwanese people always say that Japan helps Taiwan. I hope that this great relationship will last forever. Our relationship is strongly connected. Next time we Japanese want to help Taiwan.

As a Taiwanese, I don't really need your help as a Japanese. Please don't arrogantly assume that, after colonizing Taiwan for 50 years, mistreating and killing us, and using us to harm our own compatriots, Japan can now exploit us again to counter the mainland. Japanese just want to see China divided, and they don't genuinely care about us Taiwanese. Many Okinawans also don't consider themselves Japanese, and Japan should focus on its own issues. We don't accept your hypocrisy. Our relationship with you is only one of colonizer and colonized. In the nearly 1000 years of history, Japan has repeatedly violated Taiwan. For me, the credibility of the Japanese people is zero, and the painful history tells Taiwanese that Japanese people can never be friends. If, as you say, "next time you help us," please directly engage with the mainland. We won't accept your military landing in Taiwan, and Taiwanese people won't allow Japan to turn Taiwan into a battlefield.

Last year when China tried pressuring Taiwan over pineapples, everyone in Japan started buying Taiwanese pineapples intended for China. People in Japan also remember the pro Japan sentiment of leaders like Lee Tenghui and support for Japan after earthquakes. News coverage in Japan of Taiwan is overwhelmingly positive. I think it is a shame Japan as a nation can’t be as openly friendly to Taiwan as it feels out of PRC sensitivity but I’m glad the two are such good friends.

In fact, the vast majority of Koreans do not say 'I don't like Taiwan because I like Japan', but they do not say 'I don't understand' or 'I don't understand'. I'm a half Japanese and living in Japan too but I don't hear people talking about politics much. I think we tend to have middle-ground mindset in most of the problems . I've traveled to South East Asian countries and they too have positive view to us . Maybe it's because Japanese companies are offering jobs to them ? Idk , but it's interesting because our history with the neighboring countries wasn't good in the past . I'm glad that I got to speak with them . They're more open about their opinions on the world's politics than most of the Japanese .

i think it’s because of the soft power (jpop, japanese products especially appliances, japanese food, and of course, anime) that japan has cultivated over the years spreading through globalization. when the country had the bubble boom, it essentially jumpstarted the whole love affair of the world towards japan. my country doesn’t feel the animosity towards japan now (i’m half filipino, half japanese but living here in the philippines) because of this, and the several instances of alliance with japan in regards to different aspects were effective. it’s kind of commendable to a degree, really, especially in part when you know the terrible things japn has done here in the 2nd world war (e.g. comfort women). i think it’s also because filipinos as a whole aren’t really vindictive and don’t dwell on the past. we’re too busy living our own lives in a shitty economy right now and earning our keep to live, so it’s just kind of “not minded (?)” by the current generation even though schools still teach the history of our connection.

I felt instant relieved when they started talking about anime , entertainment , cars , etc. That way we can have a decent conversation even if I'm not very fluent in the language . As bad as past events were between nations, it shouldn't be a deciding factor in how anyone views the entirety of a country, its people, culture, etc. Focusing on these things is just going to breed more hatred & animosity when instead we should be learning from past events and working towards not repeating things and doing things that'll be better for the future. this is happening to the philippines right now. many western people (commonly americans) have been pulling out of commissioning filipino artists because of the current political state in the country, with the elections turning out to be a sham and the son of a former dictator being elected as president. i’ve seen screenshots on twitter where they basically said they cannot be associated with us, stating it was a risk because of the recent event, and one even said (non-verbatim): “i can’t really support fascism, i thought you were better than that but i cant really force you to be different.” essentially branding every single one of us as fascist because several knockheads decided to put that guy in power. it’s so frustrating how they’re talking to us like this and act as if they’re being woke when it’s literally just performative activism hiding their racism and discrimination. many professional contractors have also pulled out of big projects. it’s terrible and the more i think about it, the more my heart hurts. we’ve been nothing but cordial with them and they give us this in return. it sucks, man. it’s not even them who might potentially suffer under this new regime, it’s us. will they be there when we’re going to be in a terrible condition fearing for our lives, livelihood and economy with the possible second coming of a dictatorship? it sucks. it really sucks.

In general, you are right, but most Taiwanese are very contradictory and dualistic. Those words are only adapted to Japanese, but the vast majority of Taiwanese generalize Koreans and hate Korea. Like the comments on this video, most Koreans say The taiwanese like Japan as 'wierd' and 'do not understand', but do not hate Taiwan just because they like Japan. However, most Taiwanese hate Korea because Koreans hate Japan. Taiwanese are really contradictory.

As a Japanese national who has lived and worked in Taiwan for a short 14 months, I really appreciate this particular AsianBoss video because it not only coincides with what I felt about Japan's true colours in the Taiwan-Japan relationship but also reassured me that at least the people featured in this interview were not playing lip service to Japan, their past oppressors/current allies. I hugely respect those who expressed negative or critical opinions about Japan, too; they were honest and straightforward, didn't exaggerate, and remained thoughtful and composed throughout the interview. I think they could have said more critical things about Japan that I probably would've agreed with, but I realize that wasn't the intent of AsianBoss. There was a good balance of Taiwanese perspectives from different people and different generations in relation to their experience with Japanese people. Some folks tended to speak more about the consumer side of things; others spoke more on nuanced subcultural aspects or had a more global view of the Taiwan-Japan ties. I think I'll watch it again later with my Taiwanese friends. We need to see more civilized discourse on important issues. And listening to the interviewees here gives me hope. Thank you, AsianBoss!

Actually, back in the day, the Japanese used Taiwan as a laboratory to experiment many ideas on engineering, infrastructure, social policies, that would later be adopt in Japan. Both as former Japanese colonies, why is Taiwan more pro-Japan than Korea is? As a Taiwanese with grandparents who have always been nostalgic for the Japanese era, I think there are two possible historical reasons: 1. Korea became a normal country whereas Taiwan came under the occupation of KMT-China (ROC). This is a major one if you really look into the history. In Korea, the nation-building process was heavily based on an anti-Japan campaign. There was a strong reason (& justified) to hate Japan to unite the nation. Yet, Taiwan was not given the same right to self-determination. The succeeding Republic of China (ROC) treated the Taiwanese far worse when they first forced themselves onto Taiwan after 1945. For example, "Chinese exploit Formosa worse than Japs did" was the headline of the Washington Daily in 1946. The local Taiwanese was shocked by the significant drop of education level, government efficiency & living standard. There was also systemic discrimination, 228 massacre & White Terror to kill off the elites and silence the local Taiwanese populace. The common saying "The dogs leave and the pigs come" refers to this period of horror. Under 38 years of ROC martial-law control, that generation used nostalgia for the Japanese era as coping mechanism as they internalised this trauma. This nostalgia passed down and translated into a more pro-Japan sentiment in the later generations. Some might say it's Stockholm syndrome, but the older Taiwanese only had a far worse experience with the authoritarian KMT-ROC, not unlike the Japanese, brutally imposed their culture and language (Mandarin Chinese) on the local population. 2. Taiwan was indeed better off compared to other Japanese colonies. (but it doesn't make it right) After annexing Okinawa in 1879, the addition of Taiwan to the Empire in 1895 was Japan's first major expansion. At the time, as a multiethnic society with various southern Sinophone settlers and a resilient Austronesian Indigenous population, Taiwan hadn't really formed a strong unifying culture or political identity. So Japan faced far less resistance in Taiwan than they did in Korea. Also, Japan was aspired to make Taiwan the 'model colony' to show the West that they can colonise too (and from the coloniser's point of view, colonise well). As a result, the Taiwanese were discriminated, but still treated much better compared to other colonial subjects in the Japanese empire, i.e. Korea. The older generation looks back to this period of stable time fondly as they enjoyed social security, job opportunities & access to education. Unfortunately, this difference in colonial experience can also make some Taiwanese blind to the atrocity Japan committed elsewhere in WW2.

Should Koreans be 'guided' by Taiwanese? I am from Myanmar. For most of us Japan is an inspiration. It was respectable how Japan grow from WWII. There were a lot of propaganda movies about how despicable and primal Japan was during the war but they never stick because the Japan nowadays is completely different from how it was portrayed in these movies. So, we only hate MAL Junta.

Generally Taiwanese have good impressions about Canada.... many people immigrated there ...but if you're talking about Québec then I guess we don't know very much except it once tried to get independence from Canada, and the fact that people there speak French 😅 myself know that french spoken in Québec is said to be quite different from those in France, but I don't know french well enough to tell the difference

I think one of the reasons that wasn't mentioned that explains why Taiwanese people generally have positive attitudes towards Japan, is because Taiwan was heavily oppressed by the Nationalist Party regime (Kuomintang/KMT) when Japanese colonialism ended in Taiwan. Compared to Japanese rule, the KMT was much more oppressive, with the 228 incident that led to decades of martial law, where tens of thousands were imprisoned, tortured, killed, etc. Of course Japan as a colonialist regime oppressed Taiwanese people (there are lots of records of the brutality against aboriginal folks in Taiwan, as an example), but I think the lasting legacy of Japanese colonialism in Taiwan was generally positive, both in terms of the improvements it introduced in education, infrastructure, farming, irrigation, etc., but also because of the "backwardness" of KMT soldiers and rule in comparison. When you are suddenly under a new regime that is much more oppressive, no matter how restrictive the previous regime was, in some sense it provides folks with a sense of positive retrospect.

Where did u find these people … I understand Asia boss tried to present the “ many different points of views”, but honestly if you interview Taiwanese people , I dare to say 8/10 of us are very positive about Japan. Not many people will ever stand aside China than Japan. So at least one of your question is very wrong. I think you may have hand picked opinions that are not particularly friendly toward Japan , in many very friendly interviews. But I am very surprised it is presented as the video here as a Taiwanese.

I wrote this as a report for a history class in university more than 10 years ago....poor English though.... 1. Because of the population, Taiwan was easier to control than Korea peninsula. 2. At that time, Taiwan was only an island of Qing. Most of all, Qing didn’t value it before attacked by the big powers (Europe countries and Japan), so the link between mainland and Taiwan was weak especially Qing was not established by the Hans. On the contrary, whole the Korea is a country; their conscious of sovereign was stronger than Taiwan. 3. Nowadays, Korean people regard Japan-Korea Annexation Treaty as a fake treaty. It seemed peaceful, but actually is not. While Taiwan was ceded by Qing due to the defeat of Sino-Japanese War. 4. Big area certainly becomes more problems to dominate. iv. Other differences First, after Japanese colonial period, Taiwan was ruled by Publican National Party (Kuomintang, KMT), but not for Taiwanese to build for themselves a new bright nation. However, people in Taiwan were respecting the new government from China with joys, but by the international rule (Treaty of Peace with Japan), it was not rational at all. How to deal with Taiwan after WWII, should be decided by the winner side just America but not KMT from China. When KMT government came to Taiwan, they ruled Taiwan in barbarian way, more violent than before under Japanese rule and they rooted out people who before were close to Japan. That caused many Taiwanese to prefer to the former government. However, Korean after Japanese colonial period were setting up a temporary government by Korean themselves. That would be more comfortable than ruled by other country. With this point, we can find that Korea is not same to Taiwan. People in Taiwan were continuing the lives which exploited by another political power and even worse than the former. Second, Taiwan is more like a migration country. Furthermore, there are various kinds of people in the island of Taiwan. It was something like multiple cultures in Taiwan already, so there is not so strong national consciousness in Taiwan. On the other hand, in Korea is totally different.

CCP even urged Taiwan people to fight KMT so KMT would be defeated quickly (Taiwanese can also establish their own country). The true is KMT just used Taiwan as a base to fight against CCP. If KMT didn't come, Taiwan was safe and no need to fight against China(CCP). So where is the "Self-determination" for Taiwanese after WW2? America and China(KMT) were good friends as you said, victorious in WW2, so America didnt say anything about this. Thats why no one cares about Taiwanese people.

The Taiwanese often preserve or even use its colonial-time houses, statues or facilities like most notably the Presidential Office Building rather than smash or remove them. That like-minded attitude is interpreted very positively by the Japanese people. Of course, such can never be generalized to address the entire bilateral relations, but it's a good implication.

It was more out of practical necessity than a desire to preserve. The KMT destroyed a lot of Japanese landmarks and replaced them with ugly concrete. Taipei Main Station was one of them.

Japan is not "the" first nor "the" greatest, but belongs to the top tier group (say, the top 10-20% of all countries in the world in several key indices). I think it will continue to do so.

Korea and Taiwan was annexed (governed) not colonized. colonization in general does not give education to local people and recruit them to the top of military. it was governed to give Taiwanese and Koreans the same education and living standard as Japanese. the Taiwanese conveyed that accurately to future generations while the Koreans twisted it.

Im japanese and live in Japan. I live with Taiwan people in a share house. They are so kind. Sometimes we share japanese or Taiwan foods 👍🥰 In business scene too they are so smart and I love. Now japan buy many Taiwan pineapples and we see them everywhere in supermarkets. I sometime buy it for Taiwan! Some day I visit there 😃
