I think you’ve highlighted a very important and overlooked point , which totally makes sense. More analysts should be looking at how this factor will impact on India’s future progress. Here in South Africa, we have had recent history of State capture by a politically-connected Indian billionaire through bribery of corrupt politicians, with the purpose of monopolising State tenders through shell companies. If this same practice is common in India, then on the basis of this one factor I don’t believe that India will progress much. It needs to clean up its political and business relationships as a matter of prime importance. China has managed to crack down on such corruption, but if it hadn’t done so, we wouldn’t even be talking of China as the superpower it is today.

I believe these kinds of narratives are sown on purpose - the principle of ‘divide and conquer’ was successfully applied by western colonial powers for centuries, and is still in use to this day. Just imagine if India and China were to form the close partnership such as that has recently formed between Russia and China. Now THAT would be an unstoppable power the likes of which this world has never seen before ! I happen to be Chinese (born and living in South Africa), and I am happy irrespective of if China or India progresses - remember that each country has massive populations of 1.4 billion people. If they BOTH progress, that means that 2.8 billion people on this planet have a better chance at feeding their families, clothing and educating themselves, and living a better life. If that’s not a win for humanity, I don’t know what is.

When a foreign company is looking for building a new factory, or new office somewhere in China, the local government/bureau (depends on the size of that company) will mostly come to aid and help that company in every possible way so it can operate softly, with all kinds of infrastrutures. When a foreign company is looking for building a new factory, or new office somewhere in India, every local bureau senses corrupted money, they will let you grow a bit for a period of time and then harvest and squeeze you in every possible way, with shortage of electric power and water supply. And that's only a fraction of the differences.

I'm from north america, and everything I see about India has traditionally been very positive and in terms of business, they're basically saying that India's rise is all but inevitable at this point, like a China 2.0. The only "negative" i've seen about India has been relatively recently associated with some sort of internal political issues in Indi itself, but I haven't really heard anything new about that in like 5 years. The only other "negative" thing I've seen about india has been with conflicts/wars in its north with pakistan and china or even separatists... but I wouldn't really call those "negative".

China's success is the result of capable and competent government and hard working people. Chinese government has successfully combined capitalist and communist systems and made a system that fits China's own tradition, culture and development stage. China's step by step, region by region approach worked very well. China's flexibility and versatile economic policies are also the key factor for China's success. Chinese government is a very much people oriented government who puts the needs of its people at first priority. Every step of the economic development in China, benefits to its people always put on as first priority. That is the reason, all Chinese people have been benefited tremendously from China's development and modernization took place in the last 40 years or so. China has lifted extreme poverty in the country. This is a great contribution not only for China but for the world. China does not need assistance from UN on food products but India does. China took away the burden from UN. Unlike the West who got rich and powerful by invading, looting, genocide and destroying other countries, rising China did not do any of that.

Progress is not just population and GDP numbers. It's how the real population, the common folks, benefit from such growth. India is still inundated by the poor all over the country. Only the rich and some middle class benefit from india's growth. I am from India, and I am pretty certain India will grow, but not reach the growth level of China. Not just because of policies but education, peoples mindset and just the lifestyle. There is a lot of room to improve. India need to cooperate with its biggest trade partner, China, to turn itself into a global manufacturing power, with seamless integration with global supply chain. It has long been China's stance that "Put the border disputes aside, let us cooperate on everything else. " An emerging power like India cannot let its development be kidnapped by border disputes. Look at Japan and S. Korea. These two East Asia neighbors can sit down for negotiations and cooperations, despite of their long time disputes over the sovereignty of the Liancourt Rocks in the sea between them. That is political wisdom and diplomatic maturity on full display. Other countries such as China and India can definitely learn from S. Korea and Japan to manage their difference on borders, LAC, or whatever, and develop their relationship for the benefit of the economy and people. The US, with its dirty "divide and conquer" tricks, doesn't want to see BRICS countries developing fast together. As an Indian , what i see from happening in India is that, no we are the Next China. Our politicians still play the religion card wildly. I would even say, that India today maybe more divided than British rule. From the kind of polarisation and extremist that is constantly fed into their minds is insane. The justification for it is even bizarre, religion. Indians don't have their priorities right. Education, science, infrastructure, development, healthcare isn't on cards for them, but temples, mosques, Churches are. There is no desire to go with the change, everything has to exactly as the Indian culture was like in history of the history. We don't want to even debate the core issues. The gender discrimination, religious extremism, civil rights and social security is just a disaster. I could go on and on. But the thing is these problems are not quick fixes. China doesn't need routine elections. This allows their govt to set truly long term goals and objectives. India is a political melting pot. Modi barley scraped home recently. China has routine elections to select qualified local officials at the village level. If those locals are good, they will be promoted to manage larger areas with greater responsibility. Chinese governance is professional and meritocratic, following the bureaucratic tradition going back to 221 BC. The Chinese have had the unification concept for roughly 3,000 years, and were first unified over 2,000 years ago. India was formed externally, and doesn't have the same concepts in their culture. If India is to compete with China, they're going to have to push education and professionalism much harder.

I think the ultimate reason why India will not be a competing power in the future is its foundation is very lose. The west colonized India before so they know how easily it can be divided again. India have so many different ethnic, religious, Caste and racial differences its impossible to form a real unified country. It can be easily dismantled. Also according to the Indians themselves, under Modi, bribery is now normalised and worse than ever. Before Modi, it was still viewed as not a good thing but expected. Now EVERY public official expects a a large bribe openly. Any time they're not happy, they can demand bigger bribes or your electricity during peak manufacturing hours can mysteriously disappear. This is just one example. Also because they haven't invested much in education, there is not much of a work ethic. Rule of law is very weak. Lots of stories of women going to the police station to report a rape and get gang raped by the police themselves. The point not highlighted enough to India's inevitable rise is China. It's not China vs India which is the West's narrative. It's China +India which the West assiduously tries to prevent. A point will be reached when India needs huge markets for its industrial outputs - and the biggest market is just next door. The border disputes and the West's divide and rule playbook will not be enough to restrain the increasing economic necessity to grow. I heard from Indian economists themselves, the economic growth numbers are bunk or severely inflated and most of the growth is in agriculture and services and not manufacturing. It's the Americans and the West talking propaganda to make the Indians feel good and encourage hostility against China. Also the current border dispute with China started when the Modi government committed cartographic aggression with a map of Ladakh and the Chinese said "I don't think so" and moved soldiers to consolidate what had been a buffer zone.

I can answer something about your explanation. Not Joining RCEP- Because India has FTA with almost all RCEP countries except China. Domestic Saving- Since last 5 years Indians investing in retail and equities are increased exponentially. For example. Start-up in 2016- 5000 but now in 2024- 120000 with 150 unicorns already. Manufacturing is now growing at 11% per annum. Education reforms must be there specifically in History. But I can surely say that India will not be next China but India will be India.
