Paused the video just after the start of the shopping portion because I felt some type of way and wanted to come down here to say: parents, part of raising a child is helping them understand their identity as distinct from your own influence. When he said that he'd never been shopping and his mom basically dressed him, I looked at his clothes and thought "ah, she's still dressing a ten year old boy, just in larger sizes". You have to be able to own up to the reality of your child maturing so you can help give them the tools to deal with new challenges. I was a somewhat sheltered, bookish only child myself who was very close to my parents, but they always encouraged me to have my own voice. I'm not knocking his parents, at all: it just seems from some of the things he's said so far that he's pretty much formed his identity wholly under the shadow of their ideas and expectations, and the clothes are just one manifestation of that.

I doubt many people will see this, let alone Andrew, but I have to say this. Andrew, you come across as an awesome, awesome guy; intelligent, friendly, just someone who I feel like I would really enjoy discussing politics or philosophy with, but also just hanging out with. Seriously, please don't feel as though you need to actively adjust yourself just because the 'next big thing' is coming up. It seemed like you saw personal identity and fashion style as going hand in hand; they don't. It's not as though there is any onus on you to change your fashion, and with it change your own identity as a person. I think that by getting yourself out there in college, a natural progression will occur in a way that suits you far more, and will be sustainable because it comes from a genuine place rather than a synthetic obligation to change yourself. I get the struggle of trying to fit in in high school, and feeling unbelievably insufficient when in new situations. Trust me, I've lived it. Now that I'm past all that, I can say without bias that it is better not to enact in an active shift in one's own self-image (particularly regarding social media, which regrettably can be a breeding ground for materialistic or disingenuous versions of people) isn't the right way to go about things. You do you. If this is what you truly want, it will work out for you, and I pray that you are happy. I hope that this wasn't the result of an unjustified obligation to fit in. Good luck man.
