Till this day, the movie that was the most epic for me is Baraka (1992) by Ron Fricke. And the strongest feeling comes from the scene where a Japanese monk is about to ring a huge bell, but at the moment he'd hit that bell... OH GOSH, just by remembering that part, makes my hair stand. Also... when you see the mountains of trash... or the river Ganges... etc. I also recommend some wine with this movie.

I find the discussion between Hogarth and the Iron Giant about what it means to be alive/to die touching as well, especially when Hogarth acknowledges that the Iron Giant "thinks about things" - that being a metric to decide that the Iron Giant is a living thing. The scene in Richard Donner's Superman when he finds Lois after she died from the cave-in. Hearing him plead "No, no, no" as though he could will her back to life, only to then see her body go limp was heartbreaking. The scream he makes just before taking flight is as though years of guilt for not being able to save his father and, now, Lois, has been boiling beneath the surface and losing the love of his life is too much for him to bear.

For me, it can only be the "Green Dragon Inn" scene in Return of the King, where the four Hobbits sit silently at the table and just look at each other, each with that shared experience of what has happened to them, how they've changed, how, for each of them, it'll never be like it once was, and how all those around them, in blissful ignorance, simply cannot comprehend what they have been through. It's almost like that one scene was written by a veteran, one who knows what it's like to come back from that sort of experience, physically undamaged, but inside...... It's how I felt, and, I dare say, many others too. As Country Joe said "and the girl next door will never be the same".

We showed it in 35mm at the University of Louisville in 1989, and even though it was a student theater, and performance venue we dragged all the stage monitors out to the sides of the hall so there'd be side fill (alas, the projectors only had mono sound pickups, but we tried our best to make it an event. The sound really thundered.)

My dad invited me to attend a movie review group, where folks were invited to bring a dvd and play a strictly time limited portion of a favorite movie scene for discussion. I brought and showed the same scene from the Abyss, starting at the purposeful drowning, and the strictly enforced timer ran out just as resuscitation was getting started. There was almost a riot as the attendees demanded the never-before-broken timer rule be set aside to allow them to see the final result. My dad said that was a first in all the time they had been meeting.

From the "biggest emotional impact" thread (I can think of at least five scenes that I will NEVER forget), and the "building an elaborate universe just to discard it or gloss over it in shots or only film what you need and move on" perspective, AND the "I would love to get memory wiped and see this all over again" standpoint (and ALSO coincidentally, a series with which Adam is INTIMATELY familiar) . . . . . . . From start to finish (sadly, last episode this week), "The Expanse" is the most cohesive, coherent, INCREDIBLY consistent quality, beautiful, flawless pieces of sci-fi I have EVER seen in my life. He comes to his senses and realizes the situation he's put himself in at the last possible moment: it's redemptive, in a way, and nicely rounds out his character in a movie that is known for being character driven.

There are moments I would like to relive where I was excited about something coming up where I had so much hype for it and then the hype paid off, but I honestly wouldn't want to forget the films or shows and rewatch them. Those were each moments in time that went well beyond the media that I wouldn't get back just watching it with a blank slate. Waiting months to learn what would happen to Locutus of Borg, watching Blazing Saddles with dad, sitting through a lot of TV I would never watch today to get to a finale or even a random episode that made it worthwhile. There's value in the second, third, etc. watching of a show that isn't there in a first viewing. But there's also a comfort in it with many shows. There are shows I'll go back and rewatch and be comforted by knowing what's going to happen. It's like coming home and everything is where I expect it.

And Bones replies "what you had to do, what you always do, turn death into a fighting chance to live" I was 10 at the time and absolutely nothing prepared me for that, it's first time I ever cried at a film. Remarkably brave storytelling. That scene you picked out Adam is also quite simply amazing, Cameron did a great job with that film. Yes, I agree with you on that one scene in the movie. The brutality of the resuscitation of Mrs brickman, and the tension of the final part where she comes back to life, it bitch kicks you to almost stopping you from breathing. I adore Dune #1 but haven't seen the new version yet but I am looking forward to it. I've read the doorstop of a book, and how it's more 'fleshed out'.

Lots of them, but the one that immediately came to mind was Field of Dreams. I have probably seen it 50 times and there are half a dozen moments that STILL choke me up. I hadn’t thought about it until just now, but there is an amazing and unique musical score that accentuates each of those moments as well.

Adam, you just don't hear nearly enough love for Grosse Pointe Blank - which is a shame because it remains an incredible movie. I remember seeing it in 97 and immediately going back the following weekend to see it again to kind of track Martin Blank's strange and quiet arc. So good.

It’s probably quite ridiculous but when Bruce Willis stays in Armageddon, I’ve always just had tears streaming down watching it. Haven’t seen it in a bit, but that’s what jumped out at me. Edit: Definitely not the biggest emotional impact now that I think about it, but AN emotional impact lol

Honestly difficult to recall a specific long running example but a recent one (other than basically nearly bursting into tears at the opening scene of Dune cause of how damn good it was) is the ending of Dunkirk. I'm definitely a sucker for musical emotional impact and that combination of Elgar's Nimrod variation and the plane coming down. Man that got me.

So scifi of me, but the 'like tears in the rain' speech in Bladerunner gets me still to this day. On a TV note, the Star Trek TNG 'The Inner Light' episode when Picard plays the tune at the end - it's so painfully brilliant.

For me, among others, would be the scene near the end of Return of the King where Aragorn is being made king and he walks out to to the Hobbits. They start to bow to him and he stops them with "My friends, you bow to no one." And he kneels in front of them while everyone else follows soon after. Gets me every time.

One of the reasons star wars worked so well was from taking those exact reference shots and matching them up one to one. Which captured that same sort of energy, this is a spaceship but if we want it to feel real, we can't treat it like it's special. It's like the atmosphere of the cantina scene, where it's got to look weird, but it has to FEEL familiar. I'll stop but I could go on about this all day, I loved Sports Night and I'm glad to see it talked about by anyone. Also, speaking of scenes with emotional impact. "Eli's Coming" Or at the very end when Coulson has let Dana know what is going to happen to them and she relays it to the crew. that's a great scene.

The emotional scene to me is in Avengers. When the Avengers actually "Assembled" & that pan around, with the soundtrack still makes me cheer & gives me goosebumps when I see it. I could cry everything in happiness. Another set of scenes are the final 30 mins of Endgame...from the 3 fighting Thanos & when Dr. Strange finally assembled everyone for the final battle.. 2 of the best most emotional best moments for me in movies

Adam's sentiment about being able to show someone something you love for the first time is so true I was able to show my wife avatar the last Airbender for the first time when we first got together and she fell in love with it (after saying she probably isn't going to like it) but just the joy I got from showing her something that I love (enough to get the four nation symbols tattooed on my arm) and watching her slowly over come any preconceived notions and enjoying it with me was beautiful

Oh my goodness! I adore Grosse Point Blank! The soundtrack was the first CD I bought because it wasn't available on cassette. It's such a fun, wonderful movie, filed with great moments, masterful writing, stunning acting, and, obviously, a great soundtrack. On that, I'm very jealous of people who's first experience of the Star Wars universe is The Mandalorian, or the Filoni Clone Wars series.
