I've been in construction for 20 years and I never miss an opportunity to teach or learn. I had an temporary employee that only worked for a day, but he showed us a new way to tie down equipment. It's now our SOP.

FYI to add to this. Something that's crucial if you feel nervous or scared about doing something (particularly work related). Talk it out with someone. A boss, coworker whatever. Try to talk about it non emotionally and say "I need to do x and y, and I'm currently on stage z" that by itself can organise your thoughts and help you get through that anxiety. In kayaking they teach you the "capsize drill". Having simple steps to follow helps prevent you from panicking. On that notion too, if the stress is too much just focus on the next step. Narrow down and avoid getting overloaded on the bigger picture. Gotta put out a tonne of fires? Focus on just one to start off with, it'll calm your mind and let you progress, worse thing to do is become paralysed with fear

I've learned to love jobs that are accepting of employees using tools and equipment for personal projects. I've been lucky enough to work for several outfits that had the mindset of "As long as the shop tools and equipment are ready for work during work hours, if they make your personal projects easier (or more importantly safer), use them." It does a lot for morale when you find out there are several creative trades-people who all stay late after the end of business to work on their own projects. A lot of sharing and helping of others goes on that way.

Kinda weird, but this applies to my work as well. Working in Cybersecurity, I investigate a lot of anomalies that may or may not be indicative of a security issue. There are LOTS of tips and tricks and techniques that you build up from doing this over the years. Anytime I need to use a little know technique, or I find a new way to investigate something, I share it with my team immediately, especially if I'm working with newer teammates. In tern, people tend to share things back. You have to put into a sharing culture to get stuff back.

It's funny, I actually did something similar when I put modding tutorials up on my channel. Through lack of practice of some skills, I've forgotten how to do some of the things that I had illustrated. I've referred back to my own videos and taught myself how to do some of those things again. It's rather cliche, but I'll second what Adam is saying here - in helping others I've helped myself.

I am a teacher and I share all my supplies with other teachers at first they are always cautious about asking but then I tell them it's no big deal and it seems like they're stress melts away with the open sharing

I’m terrible at starting a personal project. I’m good at doing the labor part in the middle, but I’m flat out useless at beginning one. I used to think I needed someone else’s help to get the ball rolling, but recently (Thanks to Andrew Tate) I’ve come to realize the importance of self accountability and coming into my own. I need to spend time taking responsibility to develop skills where I’m weak and building myself up to be an independent force. And Adam’s advice here about not gate keeping knowledge gained along your journey is an important lesson to take to heart. I shouldn’t become so entirely self focused that I keep my gained experience to myself. Sharing is an important step in growing.

Hi Adam, so part-time whipmaker of many years here and full-time film crew. I apply the philosophy of sharing knowledge to whipmaking for these reasons: 1-it's my way of giving back to the community of whipmakers as I cannot teach those who taught me, so passing it along is my way of saying thanks. 2-In an age where something as niche as whips still exist, if you don't pass it along, pretty soon all that knowledge, which is not well documented, because books are a difficult medium to teach these skills, and video tutorials are dominated by young people who only repeat what they learned from another young guy who got it half wrong to begin with because x-y-z, so the old timers are either dead, not on KZbin or are not sharing because that's not how they were taught. 3-Because despite my telling people HOW I do things, the fact that I come at this with my maniacal obsession to details and insane rigor in my methodology, and that means the vast majority of people will never do it the way I do it because most are too lazy or simply just not that interested in mastering these finite details like I do. 4-No matter what you say or do or how thorough you are in teaching someone how you do things, even if you ad them looking over your shoulder, the fact of the matter is everybody does the same thing a bit differently because we are all different and we all want to customize our experience so it is tailored to our needs and our vision of the world, so how someone else does things is always going to be different than how I do it. 5-A master never reveals all of his secrets. At least not straightaway. You always keep one small little detail for you. I don't mean something that will ensure the others fail if the do what you say because you left out a vital component, no. I mean the small detail that makes the difference between good and great. If you worked for that, if you earned that bit of wisdom, then that is yours. But you shouldn't keep it to your grave. Find someone who is deserving of it and who will use it properly. There's always at least one up-and-coming new wiz kid who will do things right. Give your last nugget of wisdom to that person. You don't have to give it to them when it can still benefit you, especially if you are feeding your family as a result of that wisdom, but leave it for them to find, write it in your will or in a letter addressed to them to be found after your death if you have to, though in person is better, but pass all of it on.

I upload crafting videos every other Tuesday. I mostly make post-apocalyptic weapons. I film the builds to share what I do, how I do it and show the warts and all. I mess up so darn often. But I also have tremendous fun.

If I come up with something "unique" that I am particularly proud of, and may not want to share "how" I did it, I stop and think, how much of what other people DID share got me to where I am now? Even the tools we use were invented by someone who came up with a better way to cut aluminum or drill a hole, or fashion a shape out of some raw material. What if the guy who invented the band saw said, "Nobody can use this tool but me. I invented it and anybody who uses it is just appropriating my accomplishment."

It is actually clever of companies like ILM to encourage equipment use off hours at a reduced rate for a simple economic reason. When an expensive asset like a machine tool (lathe, mill, laser cutter) sits idle it represents an opportunity cost of lost revenue. Any amount of income it brings in when otherwise it would be idle is almost pure profit outside of operation expenses like electricity. The other benefit to the company, not mentioned by Adam, is the experience gained by the person that will then be used on a later project on behalf of the employer, somewhat like free training.

I find the Buddha-headphone story intriguing because, while living in Thailand a decade ago, I heard stories of a British bar owner who got several years imprisonment. His felony? Posting a photo of a buddha with headphones on social media as a PR-stunt for a party he was hosting. Some take blasphemy much more seriously than others.
