Sometimes, a scammer will ask, "can you hear me?" Be careful, because most people will answer, "yes." Actually, they have a recording of them selling something and when you say, "yes," you are unwittingly agreeing to buying whatever it is they're selling. ( Or paying some kind of fee).

We do realize that our adult children are overburdened with work/life balance. Not wishing to impose guilt on them to handle these types of issues complicating our lives. Often times the parent has not been involved in the technology to provide the clarity to challenge these scammers or the skimming occurring at ATM's. These thieves have become quite savvy in their methods which leaves the trusting debit card holder vulnerable and leaves the seniors responsible for the loss of funds. Seniors are proven to be in positions of choosing between their utilities, life saving med's & foregoing proper food. Heart breaking when many are still here from the depression era where suffering was at it's highest & never experienced by current generations! Ol' Joey is always spewing his lies about being old but experienced in poverty, but that fool wouldn't know even the definition of struggle let alone having lived it🤬 He & all the others with their multiple choices of gourmet ice creams🤬 Those old fools don't do more than lift an eating utensil to their face after thir food is served in front of them....they don't so much as open a car door🤬...disgusting🤢🤮🤑

Somebody called me once and told me my social security number had been compromised. then went on a long spiel telling me how dangerous that was and assuring me that they could fix it. I played along with them for 10 minutes or so. Then, when they said they'd get right on it etc. etc. the FIRST question they asked me was: "What is your social security number?" I said, "You rotten, lying scumbag crook! If you don't know what my S.S. number is --- how do you know it's been compromised?"

Absolutely 💯 I got a call from what I thought was my Credit Card Co. And they claimed since I was a dedicated longtime customer they wanted to give me special credits or it was because of suspicious activities.. However he requested my Credit Card number to verify everything. Then I'm thinking 🤔 😕 ( After giving the 1st (4 )numbers hmmm.. Why would they need my card number if it's my credit card Company 💳 calling me???😨..That's when I hung up on them.. They alllllmost got me..🙄 they are real slick...be very careful and Alert 😏

@@janiceburpo6155 good thing you didn't give the last 4.. if you call your credit card, they say is this so and so? you say it is,, and they said is the last 4 and you say it is.. then they say ok, you have this much credit etc. and you say, you lost it and they send you a new one.. only thing it isn't you and you've also told them you just moved this past weekend and here is the new address to send the new card. BAM, they just got a card in your name. and your card may have been blocked. and you may not realize if for weeks till the new bill isn't paid and your getting calls from the credit card company why you still owe them 5,999...9999 someone went shopping for their new home. stay safe. if someone calls you, say i'll call ya right back.. get the number off your credit card and call them.. if you get an email from paypal that your account needs updating.. don't open it, go to paypal or phone them.. same with your bank. same with any other bills.. you call them. don't answer any calls when they call you. even if it is your bank.. at least if you say, i'll call you right back.. your better off safe than sorry. another good thing, those security questions they ask you, lie to them.. when they say, what is your highschool.. you tell them anywhere but where you went.. your mother's maiden name? tell them anything you like.. if someone got ahold of your personal info..they may have that.. but when they ask you to answer them questions, you best have the right answer. if her last name is white and you use her last name is fitzwalter. then fitzwalter best be what you use. there is no secret question police. you just need to have the right answer.

@@metalmamasue3680 well, a woman i know who is elderly got scammed.. yes, they had her believing she won some lottery..even though she didn't enter/purchase a contest or a lottery ticket. people tried to tell her, it is a scam.. but she wouldn't believe us and she continued to send them some cards you get at the store, i think a music card or gift card.. well that is a huge sign right there if they ask you to send money, another clue if they want paid in them cards. well the woman got behind in her bills and they turned off her internet, her cable, they ended up repossessed her car, and she went to a church for financial help.. she used that money to send the scammers, she went to another chairity place for money and she sent that.. while she wasn't paying any bills. and then they hacked into her social security check and had that sent elsewhere, so she was months with no social security check.. and her checking account was drained. they send her a check and wanted her to deposit it in her bank.. one good thing the bank saw that she was taking out a lot of money before said check come and they figured it was a phony check.. so they told her it had to wait to be cleared before she could take any cash out.. and the bank traced it.. it was a rubber check. since they had access now to her checking account, they would know if she deposited it and they would have withdrew the money faster than superman and then when the check bounced, she would get in trouble for it. but the bank stopped it before that could happen.. this woman who was in her 70's got evicted. and ended in a flea bag motel, then an agency deemed her unable to care for herself and put her in a place where they care for her and her money. yes, evenually she got her SS back but it took months.. i haven't heard anything from her for some time but this is how far some seniors will go believing they won a huge amount of money.. they will turn their backs on anyone who trys to tell them it is a scam too. it is so sad she spent every nickle she had and then some and it took months of them convincing her she won millions and no one could tell her different. and when her car got taken, she tried to tell everyone she was going to get that back and pay it off.. when anyone suggested that she just put back the money she'd be paying in car payments and get something outright so she wouldn't have a car payment, she'd get angry at that. some people just don't want to hear anything but one side.. sad.

I've found that virtually all calls coming through on the land line are scam calls. The voice mail answers all calls. Nowadays, scammers don't bother to leave scam voice mails any longer. Text messages are becoming filled with scam links. Only requested links should be followed. All others are suspect, even if the sender appears legimate.

But you see, you have no way of knowing if THESE ppl are legit. You don't even know if someone is putting this on your phone, that is, this video could be a scam. Not to be paranoid here, but I've been targeted a long time. I've walked into a law office that I've passed while getting groceries, just randomly, and the "lawyer" walked in the back door, greeted me by name while crossing the room and exiting the front door. He had access to the office via a receptionist, who stood laughing her head off. I was never there before, didn't know the ppl, who shouldn't have known my name. They track you so you can move anywhere and it makes no difference. These ppl are "multi-stalkers" and work in large groups ALL OVER THE WORLD. BTW, folks, it is 24/7 and never stops. It is covert and nobody will believe you. And the police laugh about it. Good luck and God bless.

Seniors are not only a generation with morals, they are a generation that believed strongly in financial planning for retirement. Seniors, as a rule have enough money to make it worth it to scam them. Also, for the most part, seniors are more likely to be homeowners. People should always remember...a scanner would not call you if they actually knew all of your key information they would not call you!! The ONLY reason the scammer calls you is to get the information they DO NOT have, such as social security number, savings account numbers, and credit card numbers. If you have caller ID and the caller name does not match your caller ID...a scammer!! One more caveat. If a caller has a thick accent and they say their name is something like John Smith, they are lying about their name and they are most likely calling from India, Pakistan or Nigeria....etc.

Nope, they are now able to mask numbers to look like whatever and whomever they want it to look like in some cases. Kind of scary considering that could be making it look like your bank, the police department, whatever. A good course of action is if someone calls, say, from your bank about a credit card and you didn't expect a call, hang up and call your bank using the number on the back of your card and let them know. Don't respond to or via any phone numbers different from the ones you know are legit.

I know with many regular purchases the cash register or check out isle is noted on the receipt and perhaps there may be a record of this with the Food stamp card if you ask them. Not sure if Walmart does it this way, but may also be a clue for viewing surveillance footage. I would think with all the shoplifting that goes on, Walmart has cameras picking up this stuff.

Be very aware that you can be scammed by what you believe is an upstanding business...like veterinarians. You have adopted a lovely little furry friend that you take to the vet to get checked out and after the exam, and maybe a rabies shot, they charge you $500. They also try to talk you into doing extra tests, involving sending a sample to a lab for a small lump on the belly, and/or having some teeth pulled on an older dog...and the price jumps up to $10,000. The dog doesn't have many years left anyway..it was adopted from the pound at an old age (>10years old...now 14). It may be a hard decision to make but, face it, the dog will soon die anyway of old age. The business I am referring to is a well known veterinarian chain of stores in the SF Bay Area. Some Veterinarians rip people off just as much as scammers do!

You should "freeze" your credit with all 3 credit agencies--Experian, TransUnion, and Equifax. Freezing your credit means no one can apply for credit in your name. This stops a lot of fraud. It is sometimes a pain when you actually want to buy something because you have to go online and "unfreeze" your credit. You can often "unfreeze" it for a limited time or only for a specific company. Also freeze the credit for your children. I know a fraud case in which credit cards were opened in the name of a child. This child will have a lot to deal with he turns 18!

Was it a real law firm or was that a scam too (made up law firm)? If a real law firm was used, but it wasn't them, I'd contact them and let them know they were being used in the scam as well. I know this is hindsight, but when something like this comes up, best to contact the hospital or doctor's office and talk to them about it. Many times, an over looked bill ends up in Collections. But if you paid and the doctor's office acknowledges that everything was paid, then further investigating is needed such as asking for copies of the detailed bill, dates, etc. In all honesty, sometimes it is possible for you to get someone else's bill or it was a scam where they lied about it. Are you still able to write to that lawyer and ask for this? Did you pay with a check or credit card? If by check, get a copy of both sides of the check and alert your bank if possible for fraud. Some credit card companies will do an investigation when you pay for a service or product and haven't received it or are double billed or are billed by mistake.

I have been scammed once and luckily got my money back, cuz I realized it quickly and called my bank. Then I started getting robo calls almost 20 to 30 a day. It drove me crazy. FINALLY, I started answering instead of just shutting it off… I answered like an old lady…. “Oh honey my son takes that care of that” and would drag it on for minutes. They finally would ask my age and I would tell them I was 94. They would just hang up. It took a while but I am retired so have the time and now I get about 3calls a day. Just last week I fell for UPS giveaway and luckily realized it and had to get a new debit card. I figured because UPS delivers to me a lot. I now get a bunch of these offers in my email. Can’t believe I fell for that one.

If anyone looks up scammer protection information online, one of the things it tells viewers is that no government agency will ever call individuals about anything---not the IRS, nor the USPS, nor will any delivery company such as UPS, DHS, FedEx, or any other big name company. No bank will call its customers, either, but will communicate ONLY by mail. They, all of the above agencies, don't communicate via email, either, so one is safest to just delete anything that comes in from anyplace that would only call.

The Better Business Education Foundation should clarify that the Better Business Bureau does nothing to help a consumer who has been ill used by a business. The BBB sells itself as an aid to the consumer. In no way does it aid the consumer. Call them with an issue and it will become crystal clear that they are a pseudo consumer help agency.

@R C Yes, I've heard that too. I still report places in the hopes that it does help, but you are basically on your own, especially when it comes to contractors or home repair. Best to select a known company that is established and been around with a good reputation and ask around too.

He said are you kidding. Scam, Scam! He asked me if I had hear about free benifits I could qualify for. Bad Grammer again. Block, deleted and reported as scam.

The best plan for ANYBODY is not to answer the phone unless you know the caller (caller ID). Put a message machine on and do not give your name or number, simply say "WE can't come to the phone right now. Please leave message." If it is someone you know, they know your voice. Tell your friends and family that you will not answer the phone unless you see the caller ID or hear their voice and recognize it. I have done this for 35 years, and it is amazing how few calls I receive on my landline.

An older lawyer friend told me just say, "I dont solicit to over the phone solicitation period." As for mail dont open it, send it back, post office back charges. Most of All keep your family away from Publishers Clearing House, think about to give away that money weekly or at one time the revenue they generate to make that possible, they prey on elderly, bed ridden, my friend spent Eight Thousands dollars of his SSI money, he was mentaly disabled. I sent back everything he ever purchased demanding a refund, never heard from them again. Im pissed the most at the actors who indorse this group! You very informative, if someone remembers just one your suggestions, you saved them from losing thousands, and there family from stress trying to figure out how to save the mess. Scammers should face the same fate that they cause plus a little payback, we use to have a lot of Ralph Naders, Consumer Protection Agency ??????

I'm a 77 year old Canadian. I think here in Canada, I think there are people who search for people that reached 65 and sell whatever they can get to scammers. Because I'll swear I must get 5 scam calls a week. I'm sure that is the same in the USA. But still have most of my brain working. When I get the call, I tell them I had a stroke and can't processing what I hear very well and also a speech problems. So have them repeat almost everything they say 3 to 5 times and stutter when I say anything. When they said I won money and and need my info to deposit it, I told them my address is in the phonebook You got my phone number from. So send a check there or bank draft or money order there. I say that in perfect English. The gutter language comes back is funny as hell. The same stuff with the supposed money I'm supposed to owe. What the hell, I'm retired and have all the time in the world to play on the phone. Some of the reactions just make my day. lol My son and his wife spoiled one of those calls. They were laughing so hard the scammer hung up on me.

I have fallen to scammers many times. Dating online, finding a scooter under $50.00 from a store name that I trust. I took a survey and the prize was new pots and pans for $6.99 to pay for shipping and handling. Then 2wks later I was charged $54.00 from a place that I didn't know about. Then 2wks later they charged me $120.00. I called my bank and they put my debit card up as lost. I got a new card. That lost debit card has been tried at Walmart, Amazon and at 2 other stores. My bank is trying to catch the who that is behind the stolen card number. That was 3 months ago and I have never received the pots and pans.

That happens a lot on youtube, especially animal rescue videos. I've reported a couple when it was obvious they were using other peoples videos and had a pay pal account for donations. Even their title was misspelled. And yet there was a lady in the comments section that wrote that she donated. Do not donate to anyone on youtube unless you check the status independently. There are many legit organizations and probably 10 times as many scammers.

I received two texts saying a package I order was being held up by the USPS, but if I just sent 3$ it would be expedited. All I had to do was entered my credit card # and it would be taken care of. Well knowing that most people at Christmas order online, this could be believable. Being leery I called my local post office and was told this was a scam trying to get my credit card number. Always check out these types of things before you act.

I still don't see how 'most people' would fall for this. If you ordered something then you already know exactly how much you paid for shipping and when it will be delivered. Why would you ever need to text your CC# to anyone?

How would they even get your email in the first place to send this type of message? I've gotten them and I know it's fake. Many times the clues are in the misspellings, but every time, I haven't ordered anything to be held up. I shop locally. Remember when the department stores used to ship your purchases home to you or to the person you bought the clothing or gift for? I'd usually get something sent by the store for my birthday from my Grandmother in the olden days when there was no internet or phone scammers.
