When my daughter was 6 years old her father died of cancer. Two years later she was killed in a car accident. Several people and I mean several, told me that God wanted her to be with her father in heaven. I was already skeptical about God and religion having grown up in a very strict cult. The thought that God would allow me to suffer so that my husband could have a buddy in heaven pushed me to investigate other religions and decide that I am an agnostic atheist.

Re: child rape My (adult at the time) cousin raped me when I was around eight. I grew up extremely fundigelical, and he was/is a "good, godly, man" who is a leader in the church and people look up to him. He actually convinced me that I'd be the one to get in trouble if I ever told anyone. I believed him and didn't tell anyone until I was an adult. I went to a Christian college (Pensacola Christian College... I regret it) and I decided to finally go and speak to a counselor about it because it hit me like a ton of bricks in adulthood. I didn't tell him everything, just the basics. That my cousin literally woke me up from sleep in the middle of the night and then took me into the bathroom to have his way with me. The Christian "counselor" literally asked me if I was "satisfied with [myself] that nothing [I] did encouraged him" and if I was "content with the fact that [my] clothes weren't a distraction that could cause him to stumble" since he's a Man of God TM. Again, I was EIGHT. I was ASLEEP when he started touching me. In my PYJAMAS. This is the kind of morality Christianity teaches. And I abhor it. However, I still don't have the heart to tell my mother I no longer believe. I'm glad I deconstructed... and that because of that, my daughter didn't even consider it a big deal to tell me that she was gay. She "came out" by excitedly telling us that the girl she had a crush on asked her out... she didn't feel like it was a bad thing, she didn't have to worry about whether or not she'd be accepted, she just told us as easily as she would have if it were a boy. Christianity is absolutely toxic. And honestly, so are almost all organized religions.

@olgs37 Жыл бұрын
@@jimmythegem6582 Dude, what? Did you actually read it? My cousin was - and is still considered - a "good, godly man". He is a pastor of a church. He preaches every Sunday. The "counselor" was also a Christian. This was at a CHRISTIAN COLLEGE. He was taught at a Christian university to be a Christian "therapist". The people who harmed me were Christians, not atheists. You know who the first atheist who I met actually was? My husband. I grew up EXTREMELY Christian (Russian Baptist) and was a devout follower/believer until relatively recently. My husband and I got married before I deconstructed. I am saying CHRISTIANITY AS A WHOLE is toxic, not you. i don't know you. And I was a Christian for almost my entire life. If this is the enemy, then I'm grateful to be closer to it because I am far happier and more fulfilled without the toxicity of organized religion and Christianity as a whole. But way to go in dismissing and invalidating absolutely everything I said and attributing your own views to rewrite history as it actually happened. It was Christians who wronged me; not atheists. And Christians continue to wrong me. The atheists I know are incredibly caring and have done more to offer actual, tangible, help than any Christian (aside from my mother) ever had. "Justify your hatred for a person" odd, as I actually don't hate him. I really couldn't care less about him. I just don't want anything to do with him anymore. You're also making it seem like I left Christianity because of that incident which is so far from the truth that it's laughable. I simply find it doesn't stand up to scrutiny and outside of a mythological perspective, makes zero sense. I also find the entire belief system very unethical and immoral and not aligned with my own moral compass. I refuse to worship a narcissistic, pathological, thin-skinned, genocidal minor god of a bigger pantheon who pitches a fit when you decide you want to live your life your way - you know, exercising the free will that "he gave you". Seriously, this is disgusting and you should be ashamed of yourself. Christians aren't perfect and the fact that you think that a Christian couldn't have POSSIBLY done all this, not unless they're a "closet atheist", says a lot about you and IS toxic in itself. Christians are just people, too. And the stuff that Christianity teaches makes for it to be ripe for abuse. Unless you were being sarcastic, in which case I apologize. But I've heard this before and it pisses me off, but I do offer my apologies if I went off on you over you being sarcastic. If you were serious, however? You need some deep introspection in order to realize that Christians can be just as vicious as all other human beings out there. They are not exempt from criticism. Especially when such Christians go out and rape children and then blame said children for the rape that happened at the hands of this godly Christian.

The only atheist I know now is my sister, and she gets even angrier at religion than I do. My religious friends and I are slowly drifting apart. Some of them have cast me out already. Then I go on YT and find people like Forrest or Holy Koolaid. They show me that I am not some confused idiot deserving suffering. I have suffered too much in my life already, no loving god would think that is just. Forrest said it best, I am not broken, I am not sinful, and I have nothing to apologize for for being human. How more people aren’t outraged by the god they believe in is beyond me. This is perhaps true of any religion, but I’m admittedly more familiar with Christianity than any other religion, but the Christian God is perhaps the greatest criminal and model of what not to be ever. Zeus comes to mind as well, though it’s evident from the myths that Zeus was not meant to be admired. In fact Zeus was portrayed as almost satirical of what it meant to be divine, he was a fool and a rapist and he was meant to be feared. The only difference between Zeus and the Christian God is that the believers of Zeus at least understood that he absolutely could not - *should* *not* be admired.

@--CHARLIE--
@--CHARLIE-- 3 жыл бұрын
@@blue.5768 free will is an illusion. Choice is based on circumstances, memories, and genetics. And while scientifically speaking the world is not deterministic, we have no control over the position of electrons and such, and even then only electrons could really effect the brain and therefore decision making. Being forced to roll a die and go with the result is not free, and even that is barely important. You don't choose things, except the things you would choose because of things outside your control (everything). Sure your actions influence the world, but you aren't truly choosing those actions so it everything IS INFACT OUTSIDE YOUR CONTROL. Besides even if I'm wrong somehow, the fact he lets us choose, but then punishes us for choosing is BS. Why let us choose a bad option when he could have that not happen. He may want our love to be genuine, but its not gonna be, if he burns us for rejecting him. That is some psychotic shit right there. Not to mention that the threat of hell means accepting him is likely to not be genuine regardless. I know it couldn't be for me. I have neurological complications that stop me from loving anyone the way the christian god asks of people. And this is if he's real. There's 1000s of religions. Almost all of them say they're the right one. Why choose one over the others. How are we expected to blindly choose the right one. That's not in our control even with free will, which, once again, is an absurd concept to begin with. (Sorry if this came out angry. Well not really, but if it did that was not my intent. Nor was it my intent to hurt you.)

@@--CHARLIE-- No dude that's a great point, all those factors do play a big part, and I totally get where you're coming from, but at the end of the day I still believe that you have a choice, even if you are unlikely to choose one side. The fact is if you grew up atheist, you probably will be one, and vise versa. But due to circumstances that has happened to me and other factors I truly believe there is a God but I can't tell you why exactly the rules are how they are, no one can. However, what do you lose by being a Christian? If you are wrong, then you die and that's it, if you are right you go to heaven to live for eternity but if you are atheist the best case scenario is you are correct and you just die, and worst case you go to hell. Even if I wasn't certain there was a God, I know which path I would choose. But I truly appreciate the comment, and hope this doesn't come off as aggressive or anything either, God bless!

My favourite analogy for "before the big bang" comes from Sean Carroll: If you walk north until you hit the magnetic North Pole, you can't go further north, every direction is south. If you travel back in time until you hit the big bang, you can't go further back, every 'direction' is forwards in time.

I was raised my whole life to be a devout Christian. Then I hit puberty and realized I was gay. I spent the next 16 years hating my sexuality and avoiding any romantic or sexual relationships. I finally started to tear away at my faith about 7 months ago and then finally became free enough to come out to my friends (still not family, though). I feel so free, but I’m so scared now, because all my straight friends and my non-religious LGBT friends have relational and sexual experience and know so much more about themselves and how to navigate life. I feel so cheated and so behind that it’s honestly embarrassing, and it makes me angry sometimes. I’m glad that I’ve always loved science and history and chose to understand it, even if I didn’t believe some of it. @Ender Bob I am an atheist myself. However, I think religion can have some useful moments, although modern society is rendering them unnecessary. The thing about religion, is it is a free way to comfort people in times of hardship - this is why it has been so rife in the past, before modern inventions like medical treatment and electricity. When people are struggling, society is breaking down, and everyone is asking why, it is easy to tell them it is part of god’s plan. Historically, religion has kept order during difficult times, and kept people together. Now though, we have a modern society and religion is no longer needed to keep people together, rendering it useless. This is the only real benefit I can see to religion though haha, hope it helps! :)

Bible is not about heaven or hell but how God created man to be His expression, making man god (in life and nature) through imparting His divine life into man. Also, the judgement of God will actually begin from the house of God (the church/ believers), meaning all people get punishment based on God’s righteousness, and Christians will be punished first! Accepting biological evolution was more of a stepping stone to do deeper investigation into my own beliefs, and why I held them. Once I realized my reasoning for denying evolution was flawed, the floodgates opened. Time went on and about 3-4 years later (and a lot of introspection), I came to the realization that I just didn't believe in any of the Christian faith, and it wasn't long until god as a concept went out to. I don't like to say "there is no evidence", because the fact of the matter is there IS evidence (anecdotes of miracles, cross-cultural beliefs, common acceptance of the divine/supernatural/spiritual, etc), but the question really should be is the evidence sufficient enough? Maj. Peppers Well, to be frank, we as a species are intensely curious & there's evolutionary reasons why it was to our benefit to anthropomorphize the wind rustling the bush we were walking past: a lion could be getting ready to pounce on us for dinner. For the hundreds of thousands of years our species has been alive, the overwhelming majority of that time we were both curious about, and fearful of, the world around us. We created stories to try to explain what we couldn't explain until we made sufficient advancements in scientific reasoning & technology that would show us why lightning, volcanoes, plagues, earthquakes, and other phenomena occurred that wreaked so much havoc on us over countless millennia. It's hardly surprising that so many cultures across the world and throughout history have created mythologies & moral lessons, as that's seemingly hardwired into us via evolution. After all, the unlucky sap who ignored the rustling bush was more likely to get eaten by the lion & was removed from the gene pool before they could pass on their more reckless neurological wiring whereas their more paranoid kin survived. I wish I could remember the name of the book I read that explored this topic in detail (the evolutionary benefit to thinking there's a sentient force behind every proverbial bush) but it's been a lot of years & I just can't remember the title or who wrote it ☹️

I read a book called "Touching the void" Two climbing partners are very high up on a remote mountain when the writer falls and breaks his leg very seriously. It's an almost hopeless situation, but his partner lowers him down a long snow slope on a long rope, but at the bottom, he goes over an edge and is hanging in mid-air. His partner holds him for as long as he can, but when there is no sign of him having climbed back up, his partner cuts the rope. He only falls a short distance, and the rest of the book is about how he got down to camp again on his own, arriving as his partner was packing up to go (it had taken a couple of days) At one point, he was faced with what seemed to him like certain death, and he mentions his satisfaction at never once having had any religious thought of what would happen after death, never thought of praying for help. This, to him, was a consolation, and a verification that religion no longer occupied any part of his psyche.

As a former Christian, the part from 1:27:40 to 1:29 where you officially denounce god was still hard to hear. It's so crazy to think that I agree with absolutely everything you said but it still makes me think you've done something wrong and this imaginary, invisible deity will be offended and send you to eternal torture and damnation. I'm still affected by my former religion years after my deconstruction and it just goes to show how powerful these false beliefs can be. Thank you so much for this video. Well Matthew, if it helps you I always looked at it like that. (Or more like at the start of me loosing my faith this was one of my founding conclusions): A god that judges me for what I think/ believe/ how much I worship him and not exclusively for who I am as a person (as in how I treat other people) is no god worth worshipping to me (more like a narcissist). A perfect/ absolute/ compassionate god should not care about his own ego (being prayed to, being followed in his every order), but how much kindness and long-lasting happiness a person causes for others. I hope that might put you a bit more at ease :).

Thought provoking. I’ve never considered myself religious but I would have said I associated with something more “spiritual” bc my thought was “there’s something greater (better) out there than me”…. But after watching this, and seeing and knowing of all the hurt that has gone on and continues to go on in the name of a god, I have realized that I don’t want to believe in that “something greater” (better) bc it simply isn’t great (better) at all. So time to live some more, keep teaching my teenagers that actions have consequences (cause and effect), be kind to others, and surround myself with good people. Thank you Forrest!

It's useful, but only because religious belief is so ubiquitous that many people mistakenly think "god exists" is the null position. If it weren't for this misrepresentation, the whole "agnostic" piece could be dropped the same way we don't have to qualify our disbelief in unicorns and BigFoot. In reality, it is perfectly fine to be a gnostic atheist and it doesn't take absolute certainty or overwhelming proof that there is no god. All that is required is acknowledging that theists have offered no good reason to believe them along with a few trivial background beliefs (like the fact that there is no good reason to accept a mind can exist without a substrate, or that even theists accept that thousands of other gods are fictional).

That last question got me to chuckle. But it was deep for me. I grew up in a secular household, but my best most closest friend was brought up in a strict Christian household. I went to youth group for most of my early teen years and I was lucky to have at least been going to a group at a church that was kind. Either way, I remember a time when the Bible study at the end got deep for me, and I was sitting with the youth leader/pastor. He guided me through "accepting Jesus into my heart" and I was deeply confused. I went home that night and tried to pray, really truly made an attempt to know God, say that I was letting Jesus into my heart. I cried. A lot. And continued to cry far too often because I knew that even if I was going to heaven, my family wouldn't be. I prayed to God often and all I felt was shame and confusion. Christians will tell me I wasn't doing it right or something, but it doesn't matter. I'm glad I'm not suffering like that anymore and I've found "salvation" in my own life

To be fair, the only reason I don't murder people is because I'll be punished by both the law and the people around me (who are alot stronger than me, and would eventually overpower me). If I could do that stuff without consequences I would. And sure I could just hide it but that's no fun and there no point risking it if I'm gonna do that. But I have almost no sense of empathy. The fact these people have the same issue, but instead because of a religion making them think that all innate empathy (what they call morality or the knowledge of good and evil) is from god, and that therefore without god no one would have empathy which they think is morality, is definitely an issue. Also the fact that that they aren't smart enough to realize that consequences for actions can still exist without a god. Like sure, I have almost no empathy holding me back, but I care too much about self preservation to commit crimes. Why would the non-existence of God, even if it did mean everyone lacked empathy, also make everyone too dumb to not act on the lack of empathy.

@@slevinchannel7589 Religion is allowed to be talked down to. Even close to the beginning he explained this. It is a concept, just like politics. Concepts and ideas are allowed to be, and SHOULD be criticised and questioned especially when they have such a massive effect on the world like this does. If you can't handle that, it proves his point and shows your biases. Like he said, you are giving religion a different set of rules than you would any other idea.

So many great points. I'm an atheist but because of my upbringing I still fear death and the 1% chance there's a hell. Anyway to get over that? I literally used to wait for the end of the world. Watching Left Behind in church instead of going trick or treating. I wasn't allowed to celebrate Halloween, was told everyone else is going to hell, sin is the cause of suffering. After my miscarriage I finally realized it's all fear and doesn't make sense. I believe in Science and facts now. Just still scared of a possible afterlife. Maybe it's just me...

What assessment did you use to conclude that there is a 1% chance? If no one has ever give you good evidence for this claim, and they have just simply made the assertion and instructed you to believe them simply because they told you, then it should be 0%.

There are over 40 documented hells throughout the hundreds of religions in the world, have you investigated all of them to make sure you're OK, or were you just indoctrinated in a specific one, so have granted it prominence??? More than one of those 40 hells sends you there for BAD DEEDS in your lifetime, as opposed to the Christian god, who doesn't care at all about deeds, but just that you worship him. Now, just by logic, which one of those makes MORE SENSE?

I like to think that in the highly unlikely chance there is a God (and we don't know which one), he probably just want us to be good and do good, like what a parent would want for their children. That is what most religion revolve around. And all the ridiculous specific commands in religions would be human error introduced through writing, copying, interpretating, voluntarily pushing political agenda in there, etc. I am pretty sure even if the Christian God turns out to be true, if you are a decent person, you go to heaven. And ironically a lot of Christians would not (the ones that hate this or that community for whatever reason, for example). And if that God sends good people to hell anyway... Well then f*ck him. I am not going to hurt people for my own salvation.

I am an agnostic religious practitioner. This means that I practice religion(s) without actually believing in it. I actively read religious texts for their poetry and literature and I take bits and pieces from religions that I like to explore my morality. I love the structure and mythology of religion and I apply it in my life. However, my overall moral compass is humanistic, meaning I believe I should practice my religion unless those religious beliefs contradict the humanistic principles of well-fare and progress for humanity. I believe observing and practicing religion with no intent to believe it’s legitimate opens up so many areas of thoughts and philosophy that are just beautiful and fun to look at. In no way shape or form is religion my authority, but rather it is something which I use in my life to expand my knowledge base on different cultures and moral systems. I hope this makes sense and I would love to discuss it more if anyone is interested.

I am a moslem, I practice Islam, also believe in Allah SWT, because my journey in life is in a way blessed and I consider myself lucky and happy also content. I don't do what my religion forbid to do, I pray 5 times a day and fast also not eat a non halal food. But I am also a moderate moslem (not extreme or fundamentalist but also quite pious one) , I believe everybody have right to do religion or not as long as they honor humanity rights and also honor the local tradition and culture. I do believe that God exist and watching over me, but to me Allah SWT is the All mighty and All the knowledgeable and don't have to be prayed in return don't have to be defend, all my prayer and my good deeds is to earn God blessings and mercy. This goes along in my science and logic thinking I don't defend my religion in science Pursue having a believe that in the end it will become clear with God knowledge and science, Allah SWT is All Mighty and great we are germs and dust on God behalf and what we do might not matter at all. My believe is God might not even exist in our realm because the realm will be destroyed by God, Holly Quran is nothing but rule and manuals book that try to convey messages from A creator to creation, one that like if JK Rowling try to sent messages to Harry Potter that live in a book realm not even conscious about it self. The degree of difference is too great hence we try to learn about God from the science of God creation and we can not fathom the nature of God. I am very happy about science and progress and also believe that what we know is too little to judge it is there a God or not, I believe so I am content and assured that any knowledge and science will eventually led us to God not contradict the religion. But my believe is not in a way to hurt or shame of contradict other non believer. It is up to you and your beliefs (or non existence of belief) as long you don't bother me or my culture or traditions..

Hey Forrest. I'm on 1:11 and while I was listening to your bash on "why accept this horrible thing/idea?" and... while your point makes sense, I'm not sure I fully agree with you. Maybe (probably) I misunderstood you but for me it's very simple to understand "why" someone would accept religion (Christianity in this case)... similarly to why someone would eat fast-food or smoke, or drink sodas or do anything that is objectively bad for your. There are always "benefits" to those things. A big Mac is not good for your health but it makes you "feel good". All the terrible and imoral inconsistencies that comes from religion are nothing compared to the wonders of "purpose" and "belonging"... Or the feeling of being part of a bigger plan. I'm not Cristian btw, but I can understand why folk would chose to be. Science , unfortunately, is very hard and time consuming. It's not just about picking up a book and reading... It requires countless hours of reading and critical thinking with research (using peer reviewed sources) otherwise anyone can easily go through creationist articles and think that they are credible work. And that's for everything... Who's got time for that? Now compare this with religion. Some one presents to you a "solution" to all that... A God who will take care of everything for you... And will ease your suffering with some misterious purpose... That makes you feel ok if you don't understand something... Just trust him. That's way easier.... Not better... But easier. I'm not religious and I love watching Reacteria mainly because it helps me learning something... I know that evolution is a fact and that the earth is not flat .. but I honestly don't think I have enough knowledge to debate/discuss/correct an evolutionist or flat earther on the spot. It takes way more effort to be a real science driven person than to be religious. Science communicators like yourself are doing an amazing job spreading the word and reaching more and more people... But watching your videos are not the same thing as doing the actual study/research... Anyone can grab your arguments to refute creationism, but if they don't read the books/papers and arrive to the same conclusion themselves... Is that different than what creationist do? Sorry for the incoherent mess of a comment. I really like your work! Just had this stuff on my mind...

But, couple points, Christian’s will say “but god didn’t mean for the world to be this way” then why did he create the evil tree, make the fruit look delicious and then put it in front of his children? And also, if Christians believe in the next world, that will be perfect, what’s to say he won’t mess up that world too? He’s going to want to see again if his children in the next heaven really love him so he will probably put another evil tree in the new perfect world even though he doesn’t intend for it to cause problems.

This has really made me want to reevaluate how much time I spend not living, and not being myself. I also hold a lot of guilt and feel shame for things that aren't necessarily my fault, which is why that really resonated with me. Honestly didn't even realize how much of that I've been holding onto until I had such a reaction to hearing that I'm not in need of being fixed. It's also funny when people ask 'where did morality come from if not god' because looking at extant species and understanding evolution... it's obvious. Look at the evolution of childcare. Look at the difference between how apes treat their fellows of their species vs more basal mammals, look at how living in larger groups affects how animals treat others of their kind... our compassion is one of the earlier, essential elements of how hominins evolved and eventually produced homo sapiens... everything in our survival depends on cooperation, of COURSE we're hard-wired to want to fit into a group and help others
