This is one reason im proud of my dad. He's a high school biology teacher, and every year, he's covered evolution in his biology class, and even still, I've heard him say hes thinking about and trying to figure out how to improve his coverage on the topic, and he still showes respect to his creationist students, if them or their parents come to him with concerns he listens to them then explains what his curriculum requires and that hes not trying to divert them from their religion but to teach them the science, as long as they pay enough attention to gain the knowledge its up to them what they do with it, wether or not they believe it or discard it completely. Hes one of the reasons im now looking into a dual degree in biology and anthropology (with a focus on biological anthropology).

God could have created a virus only applicable to humans, in two generations all humans would be gone and all other life would be fine.

i also feel like it’s made harder to understand because of peoples’ natural tendency to simplify natural selection’s processes into almost personified examples, like “it evolved to jump high” for example instead of “the environment meant that those that were better at jumping reproduced at a higher rate, so after enough time those traits took over, and after even more time those small changes added up more and more” it’s more of a mouthful, but explaining it correctly once and then switching it to something that sounds almost magical i think is worse since it doesnt have as much time to fully sink in, and it encourages an intention-based way of viewing things instead of a “shit happens and the result is obviously naturally gonna be this or that” way of viewing it, and that second way applies to so many things

American christians being terrified of evolution is so weird to me. I went to a catholic school (like, the principal was a priest at a local church and several teachers were nuns or catholic missionaries that have returned),and we were taught evolution properly, there was some mention of older theories (like spontaneous generation or recapitulation theory or lamarkism) but other than that we were tayght how evolution works though natural selection

As a matter of fact, those who do not know what makes a sequence of DNA suitable for the genome of the first CELL gullibly believe in abiogenesis.

Ok, it is a nice demonstration/joke. But from what I've read, there seems to be considerable debate in the scientific community about flossing. A lot of studies suggest that it has no effect at all. Some suggests it does have positive effects. But some others suggest it has negative effects. Though, my knowledge is limited to some browsing through Google scholar. I'd be curious to know if that was an actual science lesson, and if so, based on what data/studies. If someone has a better understanding of the literature on the subject.

I grew up and live in Canada. The 'evolution vs. creationism' issue wasn't, and isn't, much of a thing here. We were taught evolution in (public) school with almost no controversy. The more I watch on this topic on YT, the more grateful I am for that. It was almost a bonus in that they contrasted Darwin's natural selection with Lamarck's and Linnaeus' models to show how the scientific method can be used to decide between the various models and focus in on the best one, meaning the one that best fits the evidence and has the best explanatory and predictive power.

I don't see how the floss actually cleans much tho. If you swiped a thin wire in between your nasty fingers, you'd get a bit of goo out for sure, but most of it would be left behind.

No… you cannot be a Christian (or intelligent) and believe in evolution because the data don’t support it, and all the other crap that comes with it is pseudoscience. Only the silly activist teachers that say man are women are pushing evolution anymore. This is just your wannabe atheism 2.0 from the early 2000’s showing. Deal with your daddy issues a better way.
@Nivola19534 сағат бұрын
Who would have thought of that! In the “land of the free”, teachers are “free” to decide what is true and what is not. As seen outside a Pauli Wesleyan church “If your faith is big 🤷🏻♂️enough, facts don’t matter”. A perfect corollary for freedom and democracy!

So I'm in a deeply red state (NE) and it is part of our state science standards. We can't ignore it. I would find it actionable if others are. Admittedly, in 8th grade it is worded as "the results of adaptations on populations", but I'll be damned if that isn't evolution.
