I am Ukrainian Orthodox, we were introduced to Christianity only a millenia ago through marriage between a Kyvian Czar and. A Greek Princess. Prior to the marriage we were Polytheist, worshipping a creator Goddess.

@@IAreMan Interesting that it's called pop in both Oregon and Ohio. I always find the differences in language across the country an interesting thing to learn about. I think I remember some places call it soda pop as well as the ones that call it just soda or just pop. Since I lived in California from age 4 to age 10, I sometimes call it soda, and sometimes call it pop since I moved to Oregon with my family when I was 10. Also, some influence from the New England area since my mom and her family are from that area, and then my dad is from Texas, though he and his family moved a lot. Language is so varied.

Our churches should be beautiful, but I do not believe they should be lavish. In my village we have seven churches where only two are regularly used, but all have to be looked after. Our bishops live in palaces, are driven around in limousines, and know for a fact that they are not as generous as they should be. Our island needs evangelising!

And we say that in the early church NONE of these things existed, there is no evidence of these things. It looked a lot similar to how we Orthodox exist today. Do Orthodox share the same dates of major holidays as the rest of the world? Also what do you think about Day of the virgin of Guadalupe, Holy Week, Día de los muertos, candelaria, and epiphany. These are all holidays of my culture. Should I celebrate these if I am orthodox or is trying to Orthodox?

Depends on the holiday and the calendar used by the particular jurisdiction. Many jurisdictions celebrate Christmas on December 25th, but some follow the old calendar (Russians, Serbs, etc.) and celebrate on January 7th. Pascha/Easter date moves, but it sometimes lands on Western Easter. We do celebrate Holy Week and Theophany. We don’t celebrate the Virgin of Guadalupe because that’s a Roman Catholic Saint.

If the One Holy Church is apostolic and the Catholic church has apostolic succession and has valid ordination, baptism, sacraments etc, It is not correct to not theologically recognise their fatherhood, their priesthood. You might not agree with the state of affairs of the Church as a whole, the Schism. But a valid priest is a valid priest, a valid Bishop is a valid Bishop (he might be an apostate, a fallen disbeliever BUT if the succession was valid, he is wat he is), no matter what apostolic branch. To not commune is one thing, this is clear why and this is a choice. But priesthood comes from God.

Orthodox don’t believe that Rome has valid apostolic succession because they’re not in communion with us. We also don’t believe they have valid sacraments. How could we? We don’t attend their services or take part in their sacraments.

Rome lacks sacramental grace and valid Apostolic succession. Apostolic succession is more than just tracing your ordination back to the Apostles. You have to also have the Apostolic Faith, which is found only in the Orthodox Church

The Orthodox Church doesn't state, yes, it was Mary, a sister of Lazarus. If you read all four Evangelist they don't say, yes it was Mary, a sister of Lazarus. When I listen sermons of my church (Russian Orthodox), our fathers cannot state 100% that is true. And on another hand it's not that important whether she was sister of Lazarus or not.

As if we read st Luke he mentions that a woman who anointed Jesus's feet.. was a sinner and Mary, Lazarus sister was obedient, good girl. There's an argument that maybe she was Mary Magdalena. The majority of Protestant pastors have secular jobs, when you include all Protestant churches (denominational and independent). Protestantism is an umbrella term for all of the denominations that were born since the time of the reformation in the 16th century. I agree, it’s not fair to lump them all into the same category, as we have high church vs low church, etc. However, it is not incorrect to state that there are A LOT of Protestant pastors that have made a highly lucrative career out of being a pastor, namely the Evangelical/Pentecostal/Charismatic/Non-denominational types. There is a major difference between the life of an Orthodox or apostolic priest and the life of many of these Protestant pastors. If you live in the United States, you do not have to go very far to see this. - Jonathan

In the USA and Latin American countries people just say Christian to refer to themselves as non-Catholics or perhaps orthodox. It’s a silly thing, after all we all Christian’s. What do you consider lucrative? Just a quick search will find pays for pastors ranging from 36k to 180k. With the average household income for a family of four being less than 50k in the USA. 180k places that pastor in the upper middle class. Not wealthy, no private jet there. The term “a lot “ is nebulous, in my mind perhaps meaning half. I get it that the Benny Hinns, Joel Olsteen, Creflo Dollars etc suck the oxygen out of a conversation when people talk about the Protestant movement in the USA. They are the extreme fringe not the norm. Consider that another quick search says that there over 500k pastors in the US. Our pastor works construction two to three days a week. I apologize for the length of this response. I am in my 5th decade of life, my career has taken me to three states. I love small churches. Love pastors that understand the communities they serve. That just want to preach the gospel and save souls for the kingdom.

I am a Serb and I live abroad, some Serbs have become Greek Catholics. They did not give up their customs, they just converted to Greek Catholicism. There are Serbian Greek Catholics in America, Germany, and other western countries. It is rare for a Serb to be an Orthodox abroad. Why is no one talking about Greek Catholic ecumenism?

I'm a Christian, I was raised Catholic, I absolutely understand why many of the Christian Church's maintain a segregated stance. I did get rather frustrated with a Christian friend of mine when I said that Catholics are Christian, but Christians don't have to be Catholic. She told me that Catholics weren't Christian, but believed they were just Catholic and resolutely refused to hear otherwise. In all honesty, I have reconnected with God and the teachings of Christ through Gnosticsim and I am grateful for the Lord's grace in guiding me back Him. We should respect each other's traditions of faith. We should recognize there are still sensitivities towards how certain Church's treated each other in the past. But we should also remember we are all children of God, and today, more than ever, we should remain united as Christians against the increasing evils of this world. "Tell me of your faith without deeds, and I will show you my faith with my deeds" Book of James, one of my favourites. God bless.

@user-yk3vf3ub2v oh there is ABSOLUTELY good reason to approach these kinds of teachings with caution. And this is for everyone who showed some concern when i mentioned these teachings, it is largely unregulated and obscure, there are certainly those who look to take advantage of that. But you have to be cautious with Christianity anyway. There are leaders of Churches that tell their followers that they need a crystal palace so that Jesus can see their congregation pray, that they need golden watches and fancy suits. They convince their followers to give their money and they too will have fancy things! I've literally heard these preachers say, "Jesus wants you to be rich!" ... I've yet to come across that part in the Bible, but they will find passages and twist them to suit their own greed and vanity. Jesus warns us about this and millions of people continue to support these Churches and call themselves Christians. Are they wrong? Is it for me to judge them? No, and I don't, but it's not something I would surround myself with either, just as I wouldn't promote my own faith other than share what I've found helpful? I think I'll have to reflect on that now though? So there's lots to be cautious of when it comes to faith. Orthodox teaches this well, I've even discovered very small sects of Orthodxy, like the Celtic Orthodox. I respect that it asks more of you than just showing up on Sunday and Gnostic teachings do as well. Gnosis is a Greek word for knowledge, it goes back to the early Christians. I learned some time ago that if we follow the lessons and not the teachers, we can better protect ourselves from being manipulated. I hear this reflected in Orthodoxy too. Not, implying they are the same thing at all, but they both ask more of their followers. If I hadn't discovered Gnosticism first, I probably would have gone Orthodox. But it is an intimidating faith if you haven't been raised around the Orthodox Church.
