(EDIT) I am a bit confused still, I thought from videos I have seen that Mexicans are native also because that is what some people have told me too, & for some time I primarily met Mexicans and Natives that agreed that Mexicans are Native, but recently I’ve seen some Mexicans say that you should not consider yourself native unless you grew up within a tribe in Mexico, and I apologize if I offended anyone by saying I claim being Native, I don’t know how I feel about what I am anymore as I am a Mexican that grew up in the U.S. so I guess I can just use Chicana to describe me, the reason I thought I could use Mexican Native is because technically all Mexicans are either meztisos or indigenous and even as a mestizo you have ancestors that are indigenous people from Mexico before Spain made us mostly mestizos. I have heard people tell me yes I should claim being native and others tell me no that is offensive, and I don’t want to offend anyone so I think I will just say I am a full blooded Mexican that was born & grew up in the U.S. but I love to learn about Mexicos indigenous languages and I greatly appreciate our history, & I have been to Mexico several times throughout my life and I want Mexico and the world as a whole to thrive & for indigenous communities to feel supported. (What I had originally commented) I am Mexican and proudly claim being Native American too

My sons mother is half Mexican and we recently got him an ancestry dna kit and his Mexican shows up as indigenous American from regions like the Yucatán peninsula and Zacatecas in Mexico. And only like 2% Spanish. I was always under the assumption Mexicans were a mix of Native American and Spanish. Mexicans quite literally are native Americans if you ask me.

Well if your Mexican and claim Native American, than that's awesome. I am a Navajo and Zuni Pueblo and hope to see Mexicans get back to their Indigenous roots. If Mexicans what to identify as "Native American" on the census, then they have every right too. I mean on the census or when applying to college now has the indigenous tribes of Mexico. The whole ideal of being federally recognized is stupid anyway. No one has the right to tell Mexicans they are not Native American when some of our own tribes like the Cherokee Nation and other Eastern Tribes look so obviously white. Anyway we can show the world we are strong people and hopefully we can be united. #NativePride #PuebloPride #NavajoPride

Doller and a dream 84 By hispanic I think you mean Spanish. Usually Hispanic refers to North and South American people who are descendants of the Spanish from that time period. By the way I think Mexicans, most of them anyway would be far more related to Native Americans, the Dark skin is a very obvious sign. When I say Native American I'm referring to all people that lived in North and South America before Europeans arrived. as a mexican it will be nice that you guys stop using the term "mexican" as a ethnicity. Its a Nationality. And yes, there are indigenous mexicans, between 15 and 25 millions depends on the census, divided in 68 tribes. By the way the criteria to be defined as indigenous its not like in the US based in blood quantum, but by speaking a indigenous language, so if you use the gringo criteria actually there will be a lot more. So actually in Mexico are a lot more native americans (because "america" its not a nationality but a Continent) than in the US.

1.) Why did you find it necessary to mention your identity? 2.) No not all those who were born in Mexico in this day in time can trace their ancestry back to the Aztec empire. There are Black Mexicans as well who are largely descendants of slaves and were *just* granted citizenship in 2014. 4.) Mexico like any other country with a hierarchy operates under a caste system and yes majority of the population shares a anti black sentiment like many countries across the globe.

I'm Mexican and often get confused for Native American, because of my bone structure and skin color. I admire the Native American culture, or at least the bits and pieces I know. I wouldn't call myself Native American simply because I don't adhere to any of their customs and or beliefs mostly out of ignorance. In my humble opinion Mexicans along with many other Hispanics (a term I hate to use) are sort of on the limbo, because we don't really belong anywhere. As tragic as Native American history is I will like to point out that you're lucky you have beliefs and customs to hold on to. As someone else mentioned earlier, my ancestors were nearly wiped out from the face of the earth, and instead a new generation of "hybrids" were born, the Mestizos. From an early age I was taught by my dad that Columbus was nothing but a an ignorant thief along with the rest that came alongside; meanwhile the teachers at school described him as a hero and proclaimed Spain as our mother country, some still do. Religion, language, food, history books and many other things are proof of his success. I now find myself amidst a battle withing myself, wanting to belong to a culture that no longer exists and attempting to deny another heritage I despise but from which I also originate from. Other countries such as Peru where "luckier" (a tiny pinch) in the fact that it took the Spaniards longer to arrive, hence were able to preserve a bit more of their history.

Ana Alvarez, you are the typical self hating Amerindian who desperately wants to be European. There isn't such a thing as getting confused for Native American, the features that you describe proofs that you are Indian of Mexican origin, It would be like a self hating Afro American with dark skin Africanoid features and kinky hair would say that they often get confused with people of the Black race, that is not a confusion it is an assertion, you are the one who is confused, regardless of customs of beliefs your race is Native American, Indigenous to the American Continent. You can consider yourself Swedish or Snow White, but what people see you is as an Indian because that is what your race is. You have an inferiority complex, look at yourself in the mirror. Mirror mirror on the wall who is the fairest of them all? I'm Mexican born Native American, naturalized US citizen.

lol, yes I'm Mexican-American but always viewed the other Latino cultures as "cousins." I have cousins who are half-Puerto Rican, as my paternal aunt married my uncle back in the mid-80s. Yes, we are also different tribes as well. There was atleast a 15,000 - 20,000 year time frame to allow for such evolved differences when everyone crossed over to North America from Mongolia (if you support the Ice Bridge/Bering Strait theory). I don't think Homo Sapians were meant to stay apart (as much as we have wars and drive each other crazy beyond belief). The world has become globalized now. You can't find a pure race anymore.The Pygmies in Congo may be one of the few tribes on Earth that are not mixed with another race. Even the homogeneous Japanese have native Ainu and Korean blood in them - yes, Japan had its own "Native American" tribes before the Yamato people from China migrated there. The rodents did stay apart though. This happened with the rat and the mouse - once they were the same species from a common ancestor, but then speciation occurred - meaning their genetics grew so far apart, they cannot reproduce with each other anymore. I hope that never happens with us. I have not done a DNA test yet, but like every Latino/Mexican, I'm probably like Neopolitan ice cream - some chocolate here, some strawberry there, hehe. Okay, thanks for sharing your story! Stay true to yourself :)

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I think "Mexican" is just a term describing someone's nationality as being "from Mexico" or having family from there... But ethnically speaking, most people of Mexican descent would be Mestizo, meaning a mixture of Spanish/Southern European and Indigenous genes. (Of course some Mexicans may be full-blood indigenous or European genetically, but the majority I think are Mestizo.) So whether or not someone has Mexican nationality doesn't really say anything definitely about their indigenous heritage, BUT it is certainly highly likely that they have indigenous DNA.

It is common sense. The United States is a country. Mexico is a country. In the U.S. there are people who are white, black, Native American, or of Chinese ancestry, who are citizens of the United States, all kind of races. In Mexico, there are Mexicans who are part Native American Indian, and part white European (Spain, and Italy, mostly) mix population, or mestizos. Also, full blooded Native American Indians of Mexico, no mix, of many ethnic groups, like the Zapotecs, Nahuatls, Mixtec, Purepecha, and so on. Those two groups are followed by the white European descent Mexicans, and a tiny minority of other racial groups. All of these people are Mexicans, since to be a Mexican means to be a citizen of the country of Mexico, or of Mexican ancestry. It is not difficult to understand that in a whole country, there usually are people of different racial groups. Mexico, is in the continent of America. Native American Indians were not only in the United States The whole continent was inhabited by the Native American Indians of many, many ethnic groups, like Quechuas, Apache, Guaranies, Sioux, Zapotecs, and so on. The white Europeans arrived, so now there were two racial groups in the continent, Native Americans, and whites, that is what happened in Mexico, with the arrival of the Spaniards, but in Mexico, these people of two racial groups, had children together, so the mix people, mestizos, became also another establish group of people. However, the Native American Indians of Mexico did not disappear, are still around, only they speak Spanish, have Spanish names, and dress with modern clothing. The times have changed, but the Native Americans live on.

I've thought for a while now, just paying attention to the way people migrate through South America through Central America into Mexico and then Native America and further into Canada, Alaska area. we are all the same people and after 10,000 years or so in Native America I can only imagine they migrated the same as the English did Germany down into France, Italy during the fall of Rome era.

Update: My DNA test results show I'm 40% Native American. Let me save you 4:02 minutes of your life (not that the video isn't worth viewing). Yes, Mexicans are indigenous to Anahuac (North America). Not all Mexicans but most of us, about 80 percent of the population. Here's a simple way to know if your Mexican friend, coworker, classmate, neighbor....etc... is indigenous (Native American), is he or she brown? Yes? Then yes he/she is indigenous. The very name Mexican comes from the name of the most well known tribes the Mexica (erroneously called Aztec). One last thing Mexica is pronounced Meh-she-kah.

Most Mexicans would fall into the watered down Native category. I don't say this rudely, but most of us have a certain mixture, as many people have stated here. We are indeed a synthesis of race and cultures. Unlike others here, i have always known that we were mostly indigenous, with some European. I mean, how can we not know that we are Natives? Just look in the mirror. When I would see my grand mother on our visits to León Mexico. I would see her face as very similar to the "indians" I'd see here in the Southwest. In fact, Mexico has more speakers of their native languages than all of the US and Canada combined; more than 70 of these languages. Sadly they are fading fast as well.

My mom and dad are from the state of Chiapas in Mexico and I tested 73% Native American , what is fascinating to me is that from that 73% , the regions I get a match are 4 , the smallest amount from the Peru area , the second smallest Mayan , the biggest from the area comprising Utah - Mexico City , passing through the entire American Southwest and North of Mexico and the second biggest from New Mexico , USA . My opinion is that someone from a Mexican community that speaks a Native language can consider him/herself Native American , but if you grew up speaking just Spanish and identifying as 'Latino' , then absolutely not . In my opinion it is hypocritical to be a Mexican , identify yourself as a Latino , speak only Spanish , look down on those who speak a Native language , not make an effort to learn about your Native side and only when it's convenient to you say 'I am Native American' . As someone here said , some Natives look very white , I live in Seattle and a descendant of Chief Seattle who is now around 27 looks very white , but since she was born and raised in a reservation and she has traceable Native ancestry she is , in my opinion more Native American than the millions of Mexicans with 75% Native American in their genes who look down on those Mexican Natives who actually speak a Native language. Just like this girl said , we must take into account the classifications factor , if you are Mexican , first you must find out how much Native American DNA you have , because unless you were born and raised in a Native Mexican community , chances are you grew up hating everything Aztec and Mayan , looking down on those individuals descendants of The Aztecs and Mayans and speaking only Spanish. My great-grandfather was a Mayan Indian who spoke very little Spanish and had it very hard with the monolingual Mexicans. Also , remember that Geronimo DID make the distinction between Mexicans and Indians , Geronimo was in contact with both , Mexican and American Indians , and he did not considered Mexican Indians as Mexicans , but as Indians like himself with different languages and customs just like he did the Comanche and Navajo while realizing that most Mexicans have some Indian. So in my opinion if you are Mexican , and you were not born and raised in a Native Mexican community you can absolutely consider yourself Native American if you test more than 50% Native American and are making an effort to learn a Native Mexican language , if you test 50% Native American you know your tribe , if you are from Oaxaca you are going to be probably Mixtek or Zapotek , you get the point , but you must take a stance about your Native heritage , because as the descendant of Chief Seattle and highly white looking Eastern tribes show , is not JUST having at least 50% DNA , do you make an active effort to learn a Native language ? , do you make an active effort to educate your children and your family members about the pride of your Native heritage ? , if the answer is no the you are ARE NOT Native American , you JUST HAVE Native American genes , being and having are two very different things . I have British , Greco-Roman, Caucasian and Libanese genes on a 26% mix but I am NOT British , Greco-Roman , Caucasian or Libanese . Also , this is on a genetic level , on a genetic level an Aztec and Mayan are Native Americans , now as a Federally recognized American tribe , they are not , take a look at this , The Duwamish , the Native American tribe that lived right on what is now Seattle , Washington , ARE NOT a Federally recognized tribe! . So , on an American Federally recognized level , only a few tribes from what is now USA have the title of Federally recognized Native American tribe , and if The Duwamish whose ancestry dates back thousands of years to the actual city of Seattle are not , no tribe from Mexico or Canada or anywhere but USA will , but on a genetic/cultural level , by complying with aforementioned conditions , it is an absolute yes for Mexicans , Central and SouthAmericans and Canadians .

The seven Azteca tribes from Aztlan included the Mexica. It was the Mexica that built a huge civilization in the middle of the lake Texcoco, Mexico-Tenochtitlan and made Anahuac there dominion. --- It was they that fought the invading Hispanics and our treacherous native allies till the end. For that alone, they are a very special people. Recognizing there role in our history, our indigenous ancestry both full and mixed... today's Mexicans are named after them. -- But the war of colonialism is far from over... they want us to become white, they want us to forget our past; they want us to become foreigners in our own lands... and these are facts...

DNA testing companies WILL alter results to reflect political agendas. From interview: "Inside the Shady World of Genetic Testing"... "In a recent interview with Cracked, one of the major ancestry testing companies spilled the beans on what really happens when you purchase an ancestry kit. While I can't say I'm surprised, you may be shocked to learn that these ancestry sites aren't always as accurate as they claim to be. Beyond this, they've also admitted to tampering with the result to "screw with racists." When Inside Edition had a set of triplets send their spit in to Ancestry.com and 23andMe, they got wildly different results from both services. Neither gave each triplet the same ancestry results. "Tests can be a crapshoot. For DNA tests, they use genetic markers, which are little variations in the DNA one or several groups may have, but others do not. The more markers there are, the more accurate the test will be." "The best we can do is give a certain range based on those markers (or show who they are most similar to), and sometimes we'll move up a percentage point of an ethnic group if it doesn't add up to 100 percent." 'Rounding up' wouldn't be necessary if DNA tests were accurate. So unless you have the 9+ repeat allele ONLY found in true Native Americans then you're not as "native" as you're being told. At 80% native you'd have that marker. I'd place the link but it won't let me post. Google the title of the article and it will come up. DNA testing without repeating genetic codes are far from reliable.

I also don't care for the labels Hispanic or Latino, so I say I'm an American of Mexican descent. I misspoke on the citizen issue since it is not on the Census. Sorry about that. In the Census, Hispanic, identifies people whose heritage is from a Spanish speaking country. It's not a race but a choice of ethnicity. Mexican Am is my ethnicity as far as the Census goes.. I am not black, any type of Asian, or American Indian, and I don't identify with any tribe, as my race. Native American does not appear to be a choice, so you might have to write it in.. One good thing I see about the arrival of Europeans is that today all the natives of the continent could unite and be 1 tribe. I'm tlahuica from morelos but live in Mexico city and Mexico city is the mix of all the tribes of Mexico. I've met couples of different states of Mexico and tribes . I've seen videos of natives from USA and mapuches from Chile and oh my God they're so gorgeous. We're very beautiful people

I am born and raised in Mexico; I am a regular Mexican guy and my DNA is 40% Native American. If you grab another regular, common everyday Mexican, he/she will test at least 30% Native American (personally I like the word Indian) but in some areas of Mexico like the south, the common percentage is 75% Native DNA. I can tell you that most Mexicans most likely don't realize that they have Indigenous DNA because we grow up with the identity of being "just" Mexican so assuredly I say to you, Mexicans are Indigenous people whether they know it or not, or they like to or not... for the naysayers: take the DNA test!

Mmm. There’s so many things wrong with this post. 1.) The term India derived from Christopher Columbus mistakenly believing that he discovered a new route to India (Asia). So I find that ironic that you still cling to the terminology. 2.) Mexico is an indigenous term. Native American is an Umbrella term for *all* of the indigenous population of the American continents. So if you can trace you lineage back to the Aztecs of Mexico then yes, you are Mexican however judging from your percentage you also more than likely have majority European ancestry as well.

Most Mexicans or Americans of Mexican descent have Native American ancestry, but they also have European ancestry. So you are mostly wrong. Most Mexicans are Mestizo, which is a combination of both. Kickative truth "35 million indigenous people live in mexico! natives" Let's say that is true. Who cares? The Mexican government doesn't care. In the U.S., it doesn't matter how many people of Mexican descent say they are Native Americans. To be considered Native American in the U.S., a person has to trace and show his ancestry to a tribe that is indigenous to the U.S.. The tribe also has to accept them. Without that, undocumented immigrants are just illegal aliens in the U.S. and saying or identifying as Native Americans and claiming they were here first, means nothing.

As an Anthropologist and as Mexican, the simple answer is Yes! according to what the US considers Native, over 80% of the Population of Mexico is native Many tribes and the US Government recognize a certain percentage of native ancestry Mexico has over 25 million Natives, Close to 80 million Mestizos (half native/half European) furthermore if you go Mexico you will see that Mexican culture is deeply rooted in indigenous culture , and for added measure the Word Mexico is from Nahuatl the language of the Aztecs and many other cultures currently with over 1.5 million speakers, Mexica was the original name of the Aztecs

+atsfft103. So what is the criteria used to say who is Native American and who isn't, since most Mexicans and Mexican Americans have both European ancestry, as well as Native American ancestry. Most Mexican Americans that I know, do not identify with any tribe, but do know that they are a product of a mixture of Spanish and Mexican Native American. I'm wondering how many Mexicans identify with a particular tribe other than knowing they are descendants of both races. Or do they assume they are Mexica or Mayan without really knowing who they really are? In the U.S., those that are considered Native American actually know what tribe they are a part of.
@atsfft103
@atsfft103 8 жыл бұрын
Well it's important to understand that every country has their own definition of different labels of identity and it has/will change throughout time, In addition the history of the two also dealt with natives completely different as well Because of the High mixture in Mexico it is often seen that Mexican are both therefore they are Native as well as European, They do not necessarily associate themselves with a tribe because we have to remember that not all the natives of Mexico were living in a tribal society they had large Civilizations living in urban areas, When Mexico gained its independence from Spain, Mexico saw everyone living in Mexico as Mexican, it didn't matter if you were white,brown,Asian, black they all had the same citizenship, but thats not to say everything was perfect. Many cultures still witness prejudices against them, So it was seen to be more acceptable to be Mexican, but thats not to say all cultures lost their culture, In Mexico in order to be indigenous you have to typically live in an rural area, speak your native language, now that sounds alot more stricter vs how in some cases the US considers native is where you just have to have a certain percentage base on which tribe. In the end if you were to take the US concept then over 80% of Mexico population would be indigenous. Vs Mexico where in order to be indigenous you have to be more then just your blood because you are already indigenous
@3vino1
@3vino1 8 жыл бұрын
atsfft103 "In the end if you were to take the US concept then over 80% of Mexico population would be indigenous. " I've never heard of what that concept is. In most cases, when asked about race in the U.S., they list Hispanic-non black, or Hispanic-black. It is assumed if non black, you are a Mestizo of both European and Native American descent. I don't think that the criteria is the same as it is for blacks. In Mexico the rule is if you have a drop of Native American blood, or a drop of European blood, you are a Mestizo. There was another classification called Caustizo which is more European than Native American. In the 2010 U.S. Census, they listed If Hispanic which ethnic group. For example Mexican, Puerto Rican, Cuban, etc. Then they go to the races and the ones that apply to Hispanics are, White, Black, Native American. For many years, Hispanics non-black, were classified as white since there were only three races. White, Black, and Mongoloid. Now they have added all types of races. If one says Native American, then they ask which tribe. There is no criteria for Native American. It's at the person's discretion. So for Hispanics who are not full blooded white and don't look like and have never identified as Native American, and not Black, we are screwed., So for me, it's a lot easier when the choices include Hispanic-non black.

3vino1 Hispanic or Latino is a word that does not represent Mexicans properly, Both having meaning form Europe which ignores our indigenous ancestry, The US Census isnt correct it has it's mislabels, its as if someone is calling an Apple a Orange because it's been accepted but now many people want to fix that mistake, The reality is Mexico has the largest population of indigenous people in the Americas so why should they associate with Europe, People like to simplify it and say well its cause you all speak Spanish and thats a Latin language well thats extremely bias when there plenty who only speak their native tongue and furthermore if thats the case why arent Frenchmen called Latins if French is a Latin Language? The Reality is the there is plenty of ignorance/biases and laziness that people make to properly understand who Mexicans and other American countries like Peru and Guatemala are
@3vino1
@3vino1 8 жыл бұрын
atsfft103 I agree. Hispanic or Latino is a very broad term. Personally, I don't really care for it. I am an American of Mexican descent, or Mexican American. But you don't really understand why Hispanic or Latino is used. Hispanic just suggests that a person has ancestry or lives in a Spanish Speaking country. It is not a race and it is not meant to represent anyone properly. There are people living in the U.S. from all over the Caribbean. South America, Central America, Mexico, and Americans with ancestry of any Spanish speaking country. If Mexico does not want to associate with Europe, that's their business. If they want to say they are Native Americans, that's also up to them. But by saying Native Americans, they totally ignore their European roots. And that's probably they way they want it. In the U.S., we observe Columbus day. I know that in Mexico they don't. That's because they say they were not discovered. They knew who they were and where they were. I know who my European roots are all the way to Spain, but I have no clue about my Indigenous roots in Mexico. I do, however, recognized both races because I am a Mestizo. I don't know where you are from or where you live, but if you read a book on the Texas revolution, you will find three terms used. Texians (the invaders from the U.S.), Mexicans (The individuals in Santa Anna's army, and Tejanos (Mexicans who lived in Texas). Along with the Texians, there were Tejanos who also wanted independence from Mexico. Some even signed the declaration of Independence and some fought against the Mexicans at the Alamo and at San Jacinto. Personally, Tejano is what I prefer. That assumes that I am a U.S. Citizen of Mexican descent. Tejanos come in different shades of color. That's a proven fact in my family. I speak Spanish and English. The Tejano culture has it's roots in Mexico and in the U.S. In other words, most of us are bi-cultural and bi-lingual. I think we have the best of both worlds.

My language the Shoshone language or, Newa-daigwa, is part of the Uto-Aztecan language family. This language family spans from south American all the way to south Canada including THE Aztec language (nahuat). My grandmother and mother had always said that all Mexican, latino people, were all natives because Spaniards were never brown to begin with. Our people were massively assimilated, men were obviously killed twice as much as the women so its completely plausible that any Mexican, latino person is also indigenous in their own rights.

I am Cuatli Metz-Me (Eagle Claw), the name given to me in 1975 by Crow Dog, a Medicine man of the Sioux. My ancestors are the Otomies of Central Mexico. I have also known that there is a relation between the Otomi and the Shoshone; the Uto-Aztecan reference mentioned. Although he didn't speak Nahuatl but spoke the Otomian dialect; most likely, Uto-Aztecan as well. As a child going up I have often seen my Grandfather speaking with his friend who was Cherokee happily talking in the front yard. My Grandfather was an Otomi Indian from Guanajuato - San Luis Potosi, area of Mx, but came to the US at a young age. Unfortunately, because of it began to lose his Native language as he had no one else to communicate with him in his dialect. I always knew of my Indigenous heritage, but as I grew, there were others who kept denying me; have always known of my Star people. I have often felt a [relation]; a connection with the Western Shoshone and the Utes, whom I came to meet up in 1975 then, came to meet the Hopi Spiritual Master Thomas Banyacya, and Russel Means among other spiritual elders from Mexico to Canada, even an Indigenous from the Amazon basin (Peru area). In fact, the elders (Nahuas) of the Aztec tradition from Mexico asked me to carry the [52] Flames of the Nation as the Holder - a keeper of the Flame! I had to decline at the time, knowing changes were to come for me and I didn't know how to "Hold' the Sacred Manda. This brings back some memories for sure.

Mexicans are native people we are meztiizo and full blooded native. Mexico is a native word for the mehica tribe or as the Spanish named them Aztec. Many tribes in Mexico were never one solid group they fought amongst each other it is how the Spanish managed to defeat the mehica and other native empires in the north and southern continent. Divide and conquer and it is still ongoing due to the fact we don't know to which tribe we descent from so we grouped our traditions and became Mexicans.
