This phone is now available for 35 bucks at Walmart. With a 40 dollar a month Cricket plan, unlimited voice, text, and unlimited data (2.5 gig per month at 4g, then it gets bumped down), it's a pretty solid choice for those of us on a budget.

I read that they will be relaunching the Moto G, same screen, quad core etc but this time with 4G and a microSD slot (up to 32GB). No microSD stopped me picking up the original model. It's on Amazon UK as a preorder listing for 30th June 2014 at £159.99. Only the 8GB SKU this time.

It is interesting that you really go by your curiosity to find out how close (if at all) those company claims are. And its good that you took time go across the range to review a flagship to an entry level phone like this. Its true that this indeed is worth the price and I'm amazed to find that the display turns out to be really well calibrated (thanks for an understandable explanation). I'm glad that when this came out in India, I bought it for my mom straight up without thoughts after seeing the excellent quality of the Moto G myself. For the price, not only is this device good (great even in some features) but it also served as a blueprint for the Android One devices that I was surprised to see have everything (except the camera) below the Moto E and still be priced the same. I mean honestly the only sell point for Android One devices is the fact that they'll get updates (which the Moto E will be getting too) but Motorola gave the customers much more than just an affordable phone. So what if this wasn't a water repellent phone (the company never claimed it any ways), the fact that its splash resistant and can survive a call in light rain conditions, has qHD display, expandable storage with work arounds to transfer bigger apps to the SD card, ergonomic-minimalistic yet kind of nice looking design and an upcoming update to Android Lollipop make it every thing the Android one phones should have been or even bettered. I would really like to see your honest opinions on the Android One devices too.

Nice review as always! Definitely a great little performer for the money! The fact it lasted the time it did in the water test with it being picked out and submerged again before any damage does suggest some level of protection. Sure it is nothing like the Moto G, Xperia Z2 or Samsung Galaxy S5 etc but if it can handle a few minutes of submersion before damage that is still not too bad. Usually if people drop their device in say a puddle they'd have it out in seconds and in rain there would not the pressure of submersion and so I think in most scenarios this would probably be adequately protected. I would imagine even if you left this out in the rain it would be okay for quite some time

A good video idea would be to compare the Moto E to flagships of 2-3 years ago that can be purchased used for ~$130. Phones such as the galaxy s3, Motorola droid razr, HTC one x , and even the iPhone 4s would give the Moto E a real run for its money.

I'm not so sure. First, I'm pretty sure the iPhone 4s and Galaxy S3 are still going for more than 130. Can't speak for the iphone but this very well might be less laggy than the s3 and htc one x. It's running on kitkat which is meant to run better on weaker devices and it's also running an almost vanilla android. Of course it would be interesting to test.

ivanzegt I use a iPhone 4S as my main phone. Last week I decided to buy a new secondary phone yo carry my other phone number. My sister has a Galaxy S3 that she wasn't using. I only used it for 3 days and it was soooo slow... Then I've tested a Moto E and I was pretty impressed so I've got one and I'm happy. It performs good with the same apps I installed in that S3.

ivanzegt Yes, my sister done a factory reset when she stopped using the S3. Maybe can be faster than Moto E with Cyanogen Mod and KitKat without TouchWiz.

Was the back cover creaky on yours? Mine is pretty creaky right off the bat and slides around a little but I don't think it will fall off as it still needs a fair bit of force to take off the cover.

Great review. I think the strongest value of this phones (Moto G and Moto E) is that they provide a good experience at a great price. I bought a Moto G for my Dad and performs on par with my Moto X and my wife's iPhone 5S. I hope Motorola keeps making great phones at decent prices.

You like big phones; you must check out the mediapad X1 (Glory honor X1 in China). It's a 7 inch android tablet and phone which has a ridiculously small foot print. Day to day use, price and specs are wonderful.

I'm very curious to know why you test water resistant phones as if they were water proof. A splash does not mean you can dunk it. I mean, what do you really expect from a phone that is not advertised to stay ~30' under water?

Hi Erica. I have this phone and i was watching a movie but to my surprise i could not hear the audio very well , I literally had to take it to my ear to be able to make out the dialogues. Is it something you noticed as well. Also the the 3.5mm connector won't go in to the jack completely. Is it the case with ur device as well??

If any of you got the moto e online in the moto store or very early June, it only cost me $110. Great discount. If you get a like an actual cover, it saves the phone quickly. During a shamu event, I got shamued or wet by shamu. If you turned it on the cover side, it would be saved like mine. I didn't get a drop of damage! Even after half a year and three months. I like the camera and has a 75℅ chance that when you crop the photo later, the quality will be as good as the photo at first. I also found out that you may need to struggle a bit when you take a screenshot. To do that, you need to push the power button along with the volume button slightly the same time. The only struggle is to prevent the volume bar appearing. Lastly, the only way to get to WiFi is to go to settings. Sorry for mentioning all of this in someone else's video

Tip: if your device ever gets into water you should put it inside a rice basket. The rice sucks all the water and moisture from the device. And it works!

You soaked the E in vertical orientation and the G horizontally. I think this may have been a factor as vertical position would release air pockets more efficiently.

It's not being carried by them in an official capacity; you have to go shop at Motorola or Amazon. It'll work with GSM networks like AT&T, Straight Talk and T-Mobile; there's no CDMA, so it won't fly on the likes of Sprint or Verizon.
