Hello Channel Members! I'm inundated with questions, many of them hard ones, and I figured I should provide some outlet to discuss them. I'm going to try to cull questions from the previous week, and you can post them here as well. Channel Members will be able to participate with live chat as well. This is an experimental livestream, let's see how it goes!

Very good! A wide variety of questions and great answers. Look forward to learning more about Clement of Alexandria! On a superficially different topic, have been watching videos about various Ukrainian regions which of course lead back to Jewish history. Everything is connected somehow.

Dear Professor Abramson, Thank you very much for all your hard work. I am at the very beginning of trying to understand my Jewish backgrounds, which I have only just discovered in my late 50s! Two lines of ancestry from my great grandmother and great grandfather, both Sephardic. So it has been fantastic and fascinating to find a KZbin channel like yours!

On a practical level it feels logical that the matrilineal/patrilineal transition comes down to a shift in the approach to propagating judaism. When jewish men were warrior/conqueror types (like basically all ancient peoples), judaism was spread externally, and thus men who went off to war took both their seed and religion to new lands, and whatever women they had relations with likely stayed with them. By the medieval period jews were a nesting people who propagated internally. A jewish man might go off on business and have an interfaith relation but he likely didnt bring the woman back home, and the child of a foreign relationship would stay with his foreign mother to be raised in a foreign culture. Conversely if a jewish woman had a relation with a foreigner, the child would still end up raised within the jewish community since women stayed closer to home. So it basically coincides with a natural shift from promulgating judaism to insulating judaism.

Dear professor Abramson. I hear you. Please make lectures as for exam. art. You can help a lot of students in both US and Europe get starting with their studies. As you did earlier, me included. I can’t have enough studies of Jewish history with you.

Thanks for the chuckle...in responding to the quesiton about Jesus being Jew or Gentile, you quipped that because he stayed close to home and "clung" to his mother....that this PROVES Jesus was Jewish....I genuinely laughed out loud to that one.

Have a controversial Matrilineal question. I am 65 years old. Seeking answers or insight, about my heritage, like who am I ? Read half the Old Testament, researched Halaka. In 2016, found out my Mother, who is Southern Italian, was born to Jewish parents, her maternal grandmother and paternal grandparents were also Jewish. When she was born, she was raised as Jewish, in Brooklyn, until she was 8 years old (in 1931); they had to pick up and move. She lived to 100; a survivor , of sorts. . My mother’s family practiced Judaism in secret; in my opinion this had inherent contradictions; it was hypocritical; and contributed to some of them falling away from Judaism (except my maternal grandfather, as far as immediate family). Suspect this is the legacy of the Benui Anusim.(spelling?) This situation is analogous to Madeleine Albright situation except the reality is not poignant or inspiring. My Mother was very smart, and, I am ashamed to say, anti semetic. When my maternal grandmother entered the final stages of her life; my Mother went through my Grandmother’s documents and destroyed anything that was Jewish; she was proud of this; I am shocked. I am also far from perfect. I cannot ask around. I was raised Catholic. In hindsight, it was like things were hidden, there was a lot of evidence of a Jewish heritage. There is no documentation. I cannot do a DNA test either. Only have a testimonial from my mother when she was 96, with Alzheimer’s; and my maternal grandmother’s wedding gift (wine glasses with a Star of David on the bottom.)

Re matrilineal lines, I heard that it related to men spreading their seed far and wide, so self-professed family members could spring up, looking for their part of the family fortune. The women were considered more reliable for carrying on the family line.

Dear Professor Abramson ...you said there is no way the wall stone can be dated by an archeologist. Yes. Archeologists can date the wall stone down to the chemicals and elements in the wall stone. By dating chemicals and elements a date of creation of the etching or article can be possible through spectrometry with a specialized radar microscope. The folks searching for pirate treasure on Oak Island in Nova Scotia use the radar to determine if they are close to the right era with the artifacts they find. To date a wall and particularly the etching you will need a forensic geologist. This is their specialty. Scott Wolters of Minnesota and creator of the series "America Unearthed" on KZbin uses this method to authenticate and see if etching are real or clever fakes.

A working definition ? That's another 60 min lecture. Joseph married Dina's daughter. Moses' son was circumcised by his wife with a flint rock. Hope URJ doesn't see this, you've justified patrilineal descent.

Abraham / Hagar / Keturah that's another lecture. No they were thrown out into the desert, Hagar was an Egyptian princess whom Pharoah sent to live with Avraham, should have been treated better, could be thought of as converted. Islam belives in 1 G-d, so it's not avoda zara. Up until Mohammed they could've been considered Jewish

Sad to have missed this live but enjoyed the video. I've found out about your channel recently and have been watching and listening to many of the videos. I love history and am a voracious reader and your videos are immensely interesting. Though I'm not religious, I enjoy the history and culture of Judaism. I've studied ancient history and other areas of history as well. I've always had a connection to Israel and Judaism, and found your videos excellent about Judaism in Italy. My background is Italian and it always fascinated me about the close similarities between Jewish and Italian cultures. It is a shame that the large population was reduced through the centuries and so much was lost due to the horrors of those times and the church. The parts of Judaism that got forgotten in part, like the mikvahs in Palermo and Siracusa are fascinating. Thank you for your exceptional work and your clear and enjoyable presentations.
