Dawn!!! I loved when you said you are "kind of a boring, not cool person." No way! You know so much about so many things. You make easy meals. You are great at thrifting. You persevered through FPU twice. You are so creative, and you know how to visualize. All the home remodel/decorating you do astounds me. When you and your husband tackle projects together, I am just amazed. I know NOTHING about these things. Your personality and the gentle way you encourage us to declutter wins you absolute coolest person in KZbin!

Hey, love your videos Dawn! I was raised Hindu and am agnostic now, and while I'm not an expert in yoga, I'll say there's only one popular pose that's associated with the Sun God, the Surya Namaskar and in Western yoga it's not done very often. It can be skipped if it doesn't align with your faith. On top of that, it's not necessarily considered practicing or praying to any God or Gods if you yourself aren't feeling faith towards those gods, just like in any other religion, hence why there's a difference between practicing Hinduism and secular Western yoga. Yoga has more of an origin in a philosophy towards life than honoring any of the Hindu gods.

For those who asked where to start with clutter when overwhelmed,…you have amazing advice once that really helped me. To choose one room, one surface, or even one drawer to declutter and dedicate yourself to keep that one spot tidy for one full month. I did this with our bathroom, being the smallest place in our apartment with the least amount of stuff - so it wasn’t as overwhelming. After decluttering, I tried for a full month to always keep that bathroom tidy, and left nothing out on the surfaces. It felt so good every time I walked into that room, that now it’s motivated me to tackle other small spaces or surfaces. Just a little at a time, we can do it! Just choose one small thing. The satisfaction of success on that one small space decluttered is sooo motivating and encouraging

Yes, Ive kept my bathroom the same for 6 months now, and my bedroom too. These are the easiest rooms so far. The livingroom isn't too bad. My office and kitchen get used the most so always need a pick-up. But since I started decluttering 7 months ago it has gotten easier to keep my home tidy.

To the person asking about sharpening knives: turn over a ceramic cup/saucer/plate and hold the UNglazed bottom under water so that it gets wet. You may now use the wet unglazed rim at the bottom as a sharpening stone.

My children are 24 and 28. I just found your channel mostly for declutter help. I wanted to say that quite a number of years ago I read Have a new kid by Friday and it totally changed my approach to parenting. I had become sick of listening to my own lectures, and my children had long ago tuned me out. This book and the techniques I learned had my children paying attention with absolutely no raised voice or exhausting lectures. I really recommend this read. Appreciating your content.

I’m 26, and held onto clothes, some that I’ve had since high school. Finally a couple weekends ago, I got rid of so many things that I either didn’t wear, or made me feel sloppy and gross. I was pretty ruthless even though I expected the process to be emotional. I was just at a point where I knew those clothes did nothing for me and they had to go.

2 things you reminded me of. I used to listen to Focus on the Family and they had Drs Townsend & Cloud on and their books are called Boundaries. Helped me tremendously on dealing with difficult people...including my child! And I saw not too long ago "In my 20's I worried what other people though of me. In my 40's I didn't care what they thought. Then I turned 60 and realized they weren't thinking of me at all!" You are so encouraging, thanks for all you do!

To get started, in my recent experience, it made ALL the difference to remember a couple of things: first trash, then the 20/20 rule, that's a really good one. And what I didn't hear anywhere, but what I use: one day, I was hoping my house was burnt down so I wouldn't have to declutter. Instead of disaster, that thought felt like relief. SO, that should make it really easy. Everything, litterally everything CAN go, but I get to choose a couple of things that I would really miss AND couldn't replace if my house really would burn down. I get to be lucky and save some things from the fire. Apparently, I don't want all the extra's that I thought were fun or pretty or whatever. And the things that were worth something, that I would get insurance money for, those things I can try to sell. I found that even if I get way less money that it's worth, I don't feel the guilt, because I gained something. I very quickely forget how much money I got, I mainly feel relief that it's gone and I didn't waste it. And another: plastic became really annoying to me, so I want to replace all that uglyness with natural materials that feel good, like glass, bamboo, wood, and such. And I won't buy back nearly as much, I'm sure.

I love my Cutco knives. They are expensive (at least to me) so I only own a few but it’s all I need! Hope that helps whomever asked that first question! ❤🔪

Knife sharpening- ask your hairdresser where she gets her shears sharpened. You can take your kitchen knives there to be sharpened for a relatively inexpensive cost usually. Or ask a quilter/seamstress where she gets her fabric scissors sharpened ;)

Knife sharpener -- if you hand wash and not dishwasher you don't need to sharpen as often. There are companies you can send them in, some manufacturers will sharpen. Knives don't need to be sharpened as much as we think honing your knife with an with the knife honer can be done daily to upkeep or be done as used but sharpening doesn't need to be done all that often maybe once a year as a chef I did it maybe every 6 months. As long as you're up keeping it and not washing it in the washing in dishwasher.

Hey Dawn, I wonder if that way of handling your kid's attitude is more of a short-term rather than a long-term "fix" because it feels like it might be teaching them to hold onto grudges instead of moving on and letting go once there has been repentance. The book probably explains it better! The idea is that it teaches that they are free to act anyway that they want, but it doesn’t mean there aren’t consequences. If it seems like there is something deeper going on then I’ll talk to them later about it when they aren’t amped up ❤

I Love your tips on dealing with sassy kids. I always tell myself "I'm more stubborn than they are." Like, no matter what, I can outlast them. I can say no all day, sit here in silence all day, keep toys away all day... whatever it takes to teach them that I'm consistent, I'm the authority and what I say matters. I have found that my ability to outlast them in discipline scenarios carries way more weight than simply telling them "you should obey because XYZ."

I’m struggling with decluttering my stash of fabric. Fantasy self can’t let it go. You’re so right about not engaging, the cold shoulder works wonders with kids.

Limit yourself to a “container or space” to keep fabric. If you really aren’t using it sell it or donate to someone who would love to have it ❤ o

Kit up your fabric with pattern etc. so you have assigned most, if not all fabric to a specific project. Then take an honest look to see if you will actually make those projects. I found with my stash my taste had changed and some projects I had planned were ones I wasn’t going to do…two of those were hand stitched (paper pieced) and beautiful. My hand though has enough pain in it, hand stitching isn’t possible. So…donated fabric to the Linus project (donation bins were in Joann’s so it was fairly easy.

@@lindabaldwin6293 I’ll have to check my local Joann’s for the Linus project bin. I have several quilt tops that I just know I won’t complete and would love to have someone else finish them for the Linus project. Thanks for that suggestion.

@@SassySue67 I'm sure it was just a turn of phrase, but as someone who grew up in extreme Childhood Emotional Neglect I think it's important to note that the kind of not engaging Dawn was advocating wasn't literally giving kids the cold shoulder. 21:53 Not engaging in battles about rudeness in the moment by saying a neutral Okay avoids reinforcing bad behavior, and explaining later what specific behavior resulted in consequences (and why) helps kids learn the importance of consideration for others and self-control and empowers them to make better choices.

Thank you Dawn!!! Knives... start with good ones like Henckels/Zwilling. You can get them on sale at Macy's. Then just run them through a simple sharpener once a week, 3 strokes. It keeps them nice and sharp and easy to use.

Best free find: from facebook market place...matching dining chairs and they required I take the whole set! I recovered all the seats on my new and old chairs. Bonus: Now I can move the two tables around and seat the whole family on the holidays! (I've given away some expensive, very large pieces on Craigslist too. I wanted them hauled away fast and also to see happy faces on the people when they picked it up. immediately.

Wet a rag then dip it in baking soda and rub the spot on the wall. If you see the paint disappears you have to stop. Got the info from Clean MY Space

Thank you for saying that kids grow out of the toy stage quicker than expected. My kids have grown out of it and my mom friends seem to think I'm weird that I don't have a lot of toys in the house. My kids just weren't playing with them
