Takeshi's Castle is a Japanese game show that aired between 1986 and 1990, on the Tokyo Broadcasting System. It featured the Japanese actorTakeshi Kitano (also known as Beat Takeshi) as a count who owns a castle and sets up difficult challenges for players (or a volunteer army) to get to him. The show has become acult television hit around the world.(Wikipedia). Well I asked as it also is very famous in India, hilariously dubbed by Mr.Javed Jafrrey.

Spike TV redubbed those episodes as: "MXC Most Extreme Elimination Challenge" with "Kenny Blankenship" and "Vic Romano" hosting, field reporters "Guy LeDouche" and his nephiew "Geek", every contestant got a redub for challenges renamed things like "sinkers and floaters", "door knockers", and I cannot remember any more...

This is super interesting! I was going to ask if you would make another video like this while you are staying with Miyu's family but you answered that at the end of the video ;) Really looking forward to the second video. PS: its great that Miyu tries to answer everything in english and does it pretty well, good job on that !! On a side note: it's interesting to hear Miyu gets an allowance from her parents to buy the things she needs. When i was 16 and started working and thus had a income i had to pay costmoney to my parents! lol.

In my experience in cram school(I live in Taiwan.), basically they teach you "techniques in exams", like how to solve some specific types of exam problems and give you a lot practicing problems, while normal school focus more on general knowledge of subjects.(Knowing a subject and getting good score at those exams are two different things, that's how poor those tests are designed.)

Thank you John for another interesting stream. Miyu's explanations of shcool day and school system made me wonder if you could get intervew of high school teacher aswell. Those "mock examns" made me also wonder how Japanese school deals people with different levels of learning? I mean some people learn math and physics faster than others, so how teacher adjust teaching methods so everyone will learn same things before end of term? Or is there different classes for people who struggle with math/physics? Or do they have to take more cram school lessons?

Miyu is very nice young girl, and her english is pretty good too. This was very informative and entertaining. Miyu is a very mature 18. Westerners don't understand the competitiveness of many Asian education systems. Taking questions in real time is a tad disorganized and disorienting to watch. Please more of this kind of thing. I like getting a personal view from actual Japanese people about life in Japan.

Very interesting about Takeshi's Castle. Miyu would have no idea about it because 99% of programmes produced for Japan 🇯🇵 are never repeated, unlike programmes in the West. The only repeated programme I've watched is a detective show in which the main character is like 'Columbo' with round glasses 👓 and slicked back hair. Also unless John was living in the West in the last 20 years then he wouldn't have seen the programmes that were redubbed for various countries such as for 'Challenge' channel on Freview in the UK which was voiced by Craig Charles from 'Red Dwarf' fame. Takeshi Kitano is such a Renaissance Man from his two man comedy in the early days where he talks like a machine gun to his acting, directing and painting. 👍 ✌️ 😊

The official tests are far more advanced than what you do and learn in class in Japan. That's how they weed people out when trying to get into high school and colleges. Once they enter college its a lot easier and more relaxed than in north America.

hi John , Could you ask Miyu san if its true that Japanese schools order students with non black hair to dye their hair black?it was in the news that a teenager in Japan has taken local authorities to court after her school told her to dye her hair black or face exclusion. The school reportedly told the girl’s lawyer that even a “blonde-haired foreign-exchange student would have to dye their hair black.”
@onlyinjapanGO7 жыл бұрын
The rules are quite strict and I think they mean students can't change their natural image. Many Japanese girls dye their hair brown. I think 99% of the schools would never ask such a thing - but let's ask the professional, MIYU! We will do a part 2 soon :)

Wait, is there nothing equivalent to cram schools in the US/UK? That's weird... isn't John a bit wrong there? Aren't there prep schools or something like that to complement studies? Here in Brazil we have prep schools for university entrance exams, which I think is similar to what japanese cram schools are (at least from what I gathered from documentaries and anime xD ). Pretty common practice here since exams for public universities are pretty hard and pretty sought after. ROFL, Takeshi's Castle a Ghibli Movie... there's an interesting idea. :P It's too old a series for actual young japanese people to know about... :P
@JuzNyc7 жыл бұрын
XSportSeeker I'm not sure about everywhere else in the US but in NYC there are definitely prep schools for highschools in order to pass the entrance exams for the 5 specialized highschools but alot of highschools have specialized programs that you need good grades in middle school and/or good grades on the citywide(standardized tests) in order to get into. It could be different now (it's been 7 years since I left highschool) but when I applied to highschool it was like applying to college. You find the school see the grade requirements for programs then fill out an application.
@onlyinjapanGO7 жыл бұрын
+XSportSeeker a "juku" or cram school is a supplement to everyday lessons. It's like a place to go and relearn what you learned at school. BUT - that could be my misunderstanding :p and kids go to JUKU just to do entrance exams. A "CRAM" school to me is cramming in ALL the stuff you learned so you can pass normal everyday school, which seems redundant. Anyway, it was awesome to get this question and discuss it if not to learn more about it - exactly why this was a great experience for me too! LOL I was thinking of HOWL'S CASTLE :p a Ghibli movie. Learned so much today!
