Where are the RockChucker bandsets? And what would you recommend for shooting rocks?

When I want to shoot rocks, I make a natural fork, use #107 rubberbands, and home-made leather pouches. I copy Rufus Hussey's slingshots and tie off methods. For everything else, I use the Axiom Ocularis.

PocketPredator still offers a decent rock pouch, and if you buy a bandset from them you can request which type of pouch they offer with it and they'll install it for you.

I’ve been using my Ocularis w/7/16 bands to hurl acorns out of my yard and into the field next door. Putting the point into the hole of the pouch and making sure that the acorn is parallel to the pouch is key. It’s just fun.

I guess the mindset depends on the rocks that the shooter chooses... I've shot all kinds of commercial ammo and rocks are still free. My mindset is freedom and there is nothing more natural then choosing the perfect rock to either make that 20 hop skip across the river or to take a game bird for dinner... Choosing a rock from just anywhere isn't where a rock shooter is coming from, its choosing the perfect rock that will hit his target perfectly. Narrow fork slingshots that aren't designed for rocks will get fork hits. Take the Scout LT for instance, it isn't a slingshot frame that I would ever shoot a rock through even though I do own 2 of them. A 3/8" steel ball is perfect for the LT. The perfect rock shooter has a much wider fork gap, think F16, Marksman Wrist Rocket, full size Velociraptor, a nice homemade Mule, a Natty, etc... What was David's mindset when he took down Goliath? He chose the perfect rock for the job :)

Hi Reed it's Kottonmouth from the slingshot forum. I like to use my Pocket Predator Ranger for rocks, although I very seldomly shoot rocks at all. But it is nice when you find that perfect rock.

I tried once clay balls of 22mm with high velocity bands (simpleshot black 0.8) Abosolute failure : completly erratic flight, can't hit anything at 10meters ! So, for heavy irregular ammos, go slow. By the way, i really like linatex, it push 12mm steel and 44 lead very hard,with confort.

The Linatex is fine, just don’t stretch it over 400% or it will fail early

I’ve always wondered about this question of mine and hope you will give your opinion. Back in the day we used to cut our own forks for our slingshots. Using tire tubing, like I said back in the day 😆 we use to wrap the bands around the top of the fork and tie it off on the shooters side, I’m sure you’ve seen this. What’s your opinion on this way of tying on the bands? Thanks Got mention it again, lov’n your new black bands

Thanks! The old school methods work, but tire tube isn't what it used to be. There's almost NO retraction in tire tubes any more!

...Wait. You discontinued rockstar band set? Those two rockstars were my favorite part of the whole package I ordered. One of them still hasn't even been cut down to my length because I haven't needed it yet. It's been MONTHS and I haven't had to retire even ONE of the several band sets I ordered. Almost used all 2000 clay shots between one practice band set and the bb bands. They're still going.

As a substitute you could use latex exercise bands. They typically come in a set of light medium and heavy pull. Many listings on Amazon will say natural latex and give the thickness. That's often .5 to .7 mm which is about right for slingshot bands shooting 6 to 11 mm steel balls. Don't expect the same durability you would get from simple shot rubber. The difficulty you will encounter is cutting them cleanly. I very much recommend a self healing mat and roll cutter. The other option is latex tube. It's classified with a four digit number. Example. 2040 is a 2 mm interior diameter and 4 mm exterior diameter. 1745 and 1842 are common choices for mid size steel ball. 8 to 12 mm. I like to use leather tabs to attach tubes to an over the top frame. They reduce wear on the tubes and prevent the tubes from shifting side to side and throwing off your shot.
