Out of phase means that signals of equal means but opposite polarities are summed and will produce beat and band frequencies that would not be there if all pickup elements were aligned in phase. We are literally listening to sound modulating sound all due to the process of signal summation. Note that when pickup elements are in phase sound is modulating sound however because they are in phase the signals add (in phase) rather than subtract (out of phase). This is why a single coil sounds different than a multi-coil pickup. The single coil has no other element to phase sum or phase cancel the signal with.

Watching this episode of ask Norm was good for my health because anytime I see a room full of guitars like this it automatically lowers my blood pressure.

Just to note: "out of phase" refers to either reversing the positive/negative orientation of a pickup's magnet(s) relative to that of another pickup in the same guitar, or to reversing the positive/negative wiring of one pickup relative to another. The former (magnets) accounts for the Peter Green sound: the pickup was flipped "upside down," but the unique sound comes from the magnets being removed & then reinstalled backwards. Flipping the pickup by itself doesn't give you an out of phase sound.

Hi, guys, great videos! I've got a question for Norm, don't know if it's been asked before, though: Do you own any guitar that you definitely won't sell? If so, would you please share the story with us? Keep 'em coming!

What sort of alterations and modifications have you seen to vintage guitars that have broken your heart? For instance, someone putting a Floyd Rose on a '59 Les Paul.

first off as all been digging as all here - a great thing, keep doing it! ONE QUESTION: Could you describe the difference/change in the sound in pickups for the early P90s (late40s/early50s) up to the later P90s midd 50s/ealry 60s? Feel free to compare them to PAFs and PATs. ... I have played only a view old P90s and PAFs and have heard stories of early 50s P90s being sweeter and more 3D then later ones. I own a 52 LP and my are really sweet puppies am I lucky or is that rumours true?

What system do you use for pricing guitars? For example; you stumble upon a guitar you have never sold before. Also, how do you know when it is time to raise or lower the price of a guitar?

I've been debating whether or not to get a Case for my Epiphone Wildkat and the reason why I'm debating on this is because Cases tend to have loose latches and the guitar falls out and breaks and I've been considering getting a gig bag a heavy duty one of sorts. What should I get: a gig bag or the case that the guitar fits in perfectly with the Loose Latches?

Question: Does the pickguard effect the sound of an acoustic guitar? I think the sound comes from the vibrations of the top, so does the pickguard dampen that?

I have a question: Norm, have you ever passed on a burst because it just wasn't a good one? Do bad bursts even exist? If so, from a business/collectors perspective, would you buy it anyway just because a guitar like that commands such a high price that it makes sense to do so?

One more question; Say Norman buys a guitar at a trade show for $1000, how much (on average) does he have to add on to that price to cover overhead, maintenance, and profit?

Joe, I am also a musician of normal means I visited Norms in May of this year, and I can tell you that they have guitars in all price ranges. Mark gave me an irresistible price on a new Telecaster, and shipped it to my home Norm and Mark could not have been friendlier or more accommodating Great experience

Funny moment when the "out of phase" question comes up: Nick asks who wants to take it, and they're just lokking at each other. You can tell, that they actually don't know what it means, but try to come up with some lame answer.

I'm not very impressed by the answer on how to create a sound palette. The guest's response was to just list some rare and extremely expensive guitars he owns, while not providing an explanation for what elements each guitar brings. Also, it's funny how nobody seems to know what "out of phase" actually means. They only know what it sounds like.
