My daughter and son happen to have ancestors on their father's side who were from China and Japan. We tested around Father's Day over a year ago. It was exciting to see an update to the Ethnic regions that happened shortly after we tested and showed a change in the information available for my daughter and son's ethnicity estimates and regions for the Chinese regions that were passed down to my daughter and son from their paternal ancestors.

the 'Refrence Panel' is different between companies, 23 & me /Ancestry... the company's do NOT share database's, this is monetarily driven and a disservice to the customers. This is also a great source of confusion, I have talked with many people who have used different DNA tests and were confused when they got different results...

Sad that I missed this live, but great to hear the thoughts from someone at Ancestry. I have a question that maybe someone watching this, or you, might know and I've not seen it asked anywhere. The communities that I see are pretty much spot on, but I see extra ones on the DNA Matches By Parent page to those on the Ethnicity Estimate breakdown. I'd love to know why this is and I'd also love to know the people that I match with that this is built from (or is it just from the actual DNA file matching against a known population from that area). I'd expect them to be the same but there seem to be a lot more on the DNA Matches page. I know I could go through all the matches one by one and note down the communities each match have (although some people hide these for various valid reasons I'm sure), but this is extremely time consuming and impractical. It would be really helpful in some research I'm doing on my 2x great grandfather who was from the West of Ireland, somewhere no one else (as far as I'm aware) in my ancestry is from. The problem is that even though I have this community in my By Parents page it isn't in my Ethnicity Estimate breakdown and only those seem to appear on the Ethnicity tab of my match page as a shared community. I did think it might be because I've not inherited that from the parent with this community, but I have matches from this community (I know as a match has shared me their list) and the results are based on my DNA. If anyone has any thoughts I'd love to know. Apologies for the long explanation but this is really bugging me, and a useful feature would be to be able to filter the match list on communities.

When will they update the side view on matches. I had many in the beginning that were unassigned and now they are assigning the new ones almost immediately. Are they going to go back through and update the previous ones?

I have English lines that show more irish than i would expect. While there are a number of known reasons why that might show up, i wonder if one possible reason could be that there was a heavy presence of britonic celtic dna among my English ancestors, and that they might have similar dna to the Irish.

Also sorry I had to missed the live presentation - I had hoped to raise the problem I have with AncestryDNA. They have reversed the ethnicity of my paternal and maternal lines in the last update - it was correct earlier but no longer. Both my sister and a maternal uncle show the correct maternal ethnicity which mine should match but doesn't now. This isn't a reversal of the surnames - when the surnames of my paternal & maternal lines are correct - the ethnicity is wrong. I have found no one at Ancestry that even understands the problem.

It is the user that defines paternal and maternal, not Ancestry. Perhaps something did get swapped in the update but it is easy to fix. Just go to the Inheritance dashboard where you can see the split from your parents. In the detailed comparison section, you can click on "Edit Parents" and just swap them.

@@YourDNAGuide As I explained - if I swap the parents then I have all the WRONG paternal and maternal lines. This is exactly what happens when I talk to someone at Ancestry. they tell me to swap the parents. I know who my paternal and maternal lineages are and I know what the ethnicity should be. There is no way I can make them agree - either the lineages are all wrong, or the ethnicity is wrong. If I didn't have my sister's and maternal uncle's results, I might be totally unaware. I wonder how many others have screwed results, and don't know it.

They all come up as common ancestor, but they are all his sons or daughters, Nothing farther back than that. My other grandparents and great grandparents etc go back generations with common ancestors. But not him. WHy

When you don't see Thrulines past a certain generation it is often because the people who have tested haven't posted their family trees back to that ancestor, or that descendants of that ancestor have not yet DNA tested.
