I like night turnout because here in Florida it's really hot during the day and Flys. At night it's cool and no flies plus I'm not going to ride at 2 am in the morning. The horse can enjoy a full uninterrupted 8+ hrs of Pasture time.

A big reason we don’t turn out overnight at my barn is due to the large population of big predators in our area. Big cats, coyotes, bears... although they tend to steer clear of the pastures near the barn because of our dogs, just the sound of them really spooks the horses. They end up exhausted because they’re too anxious to rest outdoors in the open and, after a couple nights, just want to chill and nap in the barn.

A coyote wouldn’t do anything to a horse, bears really have no interest either, cougars (mountain lions) would really be the only predator I’d consider to be an actual threat.

It’s not that there’s a physical threat to the horses, but a psychological one. The scent and sounds of a predator frightens them and they spook, doing themselves harm.

Emily Cool well I’m lucky that I’m in a place without large predators, but it gets really hot in the day so they usually turn the horses out during the night or when it’s cool

All the horses at my barn (including my own) live outside 24/7 unless they are being ridden, need a blanket changed, etc. What are the pros and cons to this?

Who's going to be able to do 3am-10pm for less sugars?! 😴🥱 I presume turning them out as late as possible at night would be a compromise?
