Askeladd is a beautifully written character.
@discipleofthecapedbaldy962 Жыл бұрын
He truly is. The writing for him wouldn't be out of place in any of the highest levels of literature (and is far better than a lot of literature nowadays).

I feel like the story Askeladd told was ment to show Thorfinn how different they are, not similar. Cause he told, through his past, that If you really really want to kill someone, you will do It, regardless of honor or any other thing. Thorfinn is not meant for this, his soul is beautiful, and he doesn't have that kind of hate for Askeladd as the latter had for his father, otherwise he would have killed him already
@Spirta93 Жыл бұрын
The Artorius mentioned in this story is supposed to be a semi-mythical Roman officer from the province of Britania, who after the Romans left the British island, took charge of some of the leftover romano-celts in modern day England and Wales and on whom the legends of King Arthur are based. So Artorius is just king Arthur and Askeladd is supposed to be an heir of Arthur and that is why he wears a late roman empire style armor and the classic Roman gladius style sword and why the romano-celts in Wales were also displayed in roman armor with roman galley ships. And when king Arthur died in battle, he was taken far to the west across the seas to the mythical land of Avalon to heal and come back when he is needed again. So they are drawing parallels between Avalon and Vinland a.k.a. Canada. Also Askeladd himself unlike many of the characters in this show is also a fictional character from a nordic/germanic folk tales. Characters like Torfrin, Leif, Cnut, king Swayn Forkbeard are real historical figures, but their stories are changed up a bit for the sake of telling a compelling story in the anime. Thorkell and his brother Sigvaldi who leads the Jomsvikings are also semi-mythical, with no real evidence that they actually lived.
@kpetalis Жыл бұрын
Actually Thorkell is a historical figure, but his career, especially its early part, is steeped in associations with the legendary Jomsvikings who we are not certain which parts of their stories are real and which are legends and myths. He is also credited as having received the young Cnut(Canute) the Great into his care and taken Cnut on raids We know that Thorkell took part in the Battle of Hjörungavágr in 986 and in the Battle of Swold in 1000 but after that all is steeped in myths and anecdotes so we aren't certain of their historical validity. It is not entirely clear how Thorkell became part of Cnut's army prior to the Battle of Assandun in 1016, especially considering the former's role in opposing Cnut and his father's invasion of England in 1013 and escorting Æthelred the Unready into exile, but it is assumed that Cnut considered him a valuable asset and powerful ally. Given the Jomsvikings' role in political events in Scandinavia, the possibility exists that Thorkell played a masterminding role in assisting with Sweyn Forkbeard's 1013 invasion and Cnut's re-invasion a few years later. After the death of Edmund Ironside on 30 November 1016, Cnut became king of England and he divided the country into four earldoms - making Thorkell the Jarl of East Anglia. So as you can see we know certain parts of his history, but others are shrouded in mystery and myth. And it is that mystery that has given the mangaka the chance to create his story around those missing pieces without harming the real historical truth as we will see in the upcoming seasons. The only historical manga's I've seen that have managed to weave an entire fictional story over real historical events and persons so well that the real history is not tarnished are Vinland Saga and the best of them all, The Rose of Versailles. That last one is real masterpiece. Contrast those examples with what we get here in the west with Netflix's Cleoparta, Napoleon, the latest seasons of The Crown or Queen Charlotte: A Bridgerton Story. Those have as much historical truth in them and have shown as much care for the historical figures presented in them as a garbage man has for the garbage he throws into the burner, meaning none at all.

Its funny when you realize Askellad killed his dad in his sleep, at the beginning when Thorffin was just joining them, he was seconds away from trying to kill askellad while "sleeping" but ended up not doing it bc of his pride.
@DavidHernandez-dg3jd5 ай бұрын
I wonder if Askeladd was gonna let himself get killed right there, at this point of the story we know he had no purpose because he thought he was never going to find a leader that makes him want to follow him, probably Thors was his last hope in years but he had to kill him because he understood Thors would never want to lead them

The thing is, there are plenty of violence in Season 2. The violence of being enslaved and your freedom being taken away. The violence of having your family being broken up by raid and your child being taken away. The violence of losing limbs and the pain of being brutally injured in war. The violence of a master towards the slave. The violence of seeing your loved one's life being taken away from you. The violence of seeing your property and land being taken away from you. And so on. The difference is, Season 2 doesn't glorify the violence; in fact, it forces the audience to confront the ugly and harrowing consequences of it. I'm guessing Season 2 haters are not willing to introspect about the negative effects of violence; they just want the glorification of violence, like most shonen do.

10:59-11:03 I am really glad seeing how you gained admiration for Askeladd after all these episodes, despite despising him at the beginning of the series. This goes to show that how Askeladd left an unlasting impact in this series, so much so that much of the Thorfinn's character growth throughout the entire series, as well as the progression of story were possible regarding Askeladd's contribution. Also, this episode was the one from where the story of Vinland Saga went to its peak. This is arguably one of my favourite episodes of the entire Vinland Saga series, along with Episode 24 of Season 1 and Episode 14 of Season 2.

Here's a crazy fact. The story of Artorius is the precursor to what would later become the Legend of Arthur. I had no idea of this before I watched this show, and began reading about it.

Avalon is not Vinland, the Welsh would've had no way to know about a continent to the west, and in any case Avalon is an island, but the allusion is, I think, very much intentional.

This episode made me feel so damn sad for thorfinn. He kept clinging to his revenge so hard but Askeladd just destroys both his body and his conviction. I just LOVE how thorfinn looks at his reflection on his father's dagger and ponders the road he followed. He starts to question for the first time whether this was all for nothing, and starts to realize how he truly has nothing aside from wanting to kill askeladd. It also feels like thorfinn starts to realize that after all those years, he doesn't even hate Askeladd anymore.
@Camellia_1999 Жыл бұрын
He still hates Askeladd very much (even though his feelings for him aren't all hate), his hate only vanishes after Askeladd’s death, that much is pointed out clearly in s1e21, 23 and s2e8. Please don't underestimate Thorfinn’s love for his father and how he was deeply hurt by Askeladd along the way. (The fact that he wants to kill Floki after hearing he's his real father murderer also shows this.) Also if Askeladd wanted to destroy his body, he would have done it already. You can see in s1e14-17 how cruel he can be to people he doesn't care about. If he hadn't shown any mercy, Thorfinn would have lost at least a couple of teeth and even his sight and hearing in this duel. (Don't forget that Ari lost his incisor after Askeladd’s one punch.)

As I said before, it's really impossible to hate Askellad after seeing his backstory, and there's stills some 13y old who doesn't give a fuck about story and just wanna see fights, saying that ''you should hate him'', like, if you wanna just see some fights without context or story, go watch some Dragon Ball, man.

« You still can’t even kill me even though it’s been 10 years that means you are an idiot, you are a dog chaising after food », I think Yukimura is also saying that to the audience because some people were following all these episodes just for the moment where Thorfinn kills Askeladd. Killing Askleadd won’t bring back Thors, Thorfinn doesn’t want to kill Askeladd to save others people from him he is doing it selfishly, Thorfinn has become a mass murderer because of a rule but there is no honorable way to kill someone a murder is a murder, his being is confused his hatred and he is sad. Thorfinn is the most opposite from love and from what Thors wanted him to be..

CANNOT AGREE WITH YOU MORE. 😭😭😭 Thorfinn is the victim here and he’s just a traumatized child. He doesn’t even have room to develop a proper morality and he only became like this because Askeladd killed his father and manipulated him. It’s CRAZY to blame all this on Thorfinn.
@Camellia_1999 Жыл бұрын
Seeing people empathize with Bjorn and rooting for Askeladd while mocking and criticizing Thorfinn is just disturbing. Some people are just so cruel and evil.
@Corusame Жыл бұрын
Its not that they don't empathise with Thorfinn, I think its more they realise over time that people in this world rarely behave evil and cruel without a reason. It doesn't justify the horrendous acts that are performed by characters such as Askeladd or Bjorn but what it does show us is that even though under terrible circumstances a person can be turned into a monster that underneath there is most likely a damaged person. Compassion is what Vinland Saga is all about and if you've followed Thorfinn's journey throughout this and season 2 then you'll understand that.

It felt like after killing his "only friend", Askeladd was just done... especially with entertaining Thorfin's lust for vengeance. It makes me wonder if that conversation would have happened if things with Bjorn didn't go down like that.
@adrianwagner8202 Жыл бұрын
Thorfinn couldn't kill Askelladd in his sleep, because that would be "cowardly" in his book. Meanwhile, Askelladd just finished his father off while he was sleeping and somehow he looks like the reasonable one of the two. It just shows how the pride of a warrior is just a bunch of baloney.
