If it wasn't clear, in ep 20 Bjorn was stated to have the infection from the wound in ep 18 reach his intestines so he was going to die from sepsis very soon, so he and Askeladd agreed to duel so Bjorn could go to Valhala for dying as a warrior in battle.

Could be pointed out that as he lay dying, he grabbed onto Askeladd’s coat instead of his sword. Possibly meaning he valued Askeladd’s words and friendship more than the afterlife itself.

I see Bjorn’s death as a statement for Askeladd, because Bjorn is a Dane and a barbarian Viking so what Askeladd hates but he is also part the same so he hates himself, and by acknowledging Bjorn as a friend Askeladd felt that he can finally be in peace with himself after all these decades. Also when Ragnar died there was a focus on him reaching his sword to go to Valhalla because he can’t go to christian paradise after he accepted to kill all the villagers only for Canute. Bjorn could still move after Askeladd strike so he needed to reach his sword and fight until his last breath to go to Valhalla but he reached his friend because he preferred to die in peace knowing Askeladd true feelings rather than going to Valhalla.

I saw a comment one time explaining Askeladd as someone who fights fire with fire, but hates fire… and himself for using it. That, to me, is what makes Askeladd one of the most interesting characters ever.

"I'll Play with you" Askeladd's line to Thorfinn. He has never seen this duel with Thorfin as something he had to take seriously. He has been playing with and manipulating Thorfin from the beginning. Thorfin has been a disappointment to Askeladd as he has never stepped out of his "revenge". Askeladd saw something in Thors, but he has yet to see it in Thorfinn. BUT he has seen the potential in Canute and seen his reach for it.

Bjorn points out something very important about Askelad as he dies. Askelad identifies with Wales and the Celts and the Roman derived administration that's sort of trudging forth in places like Wales. But he is 1/2 Danish, his father was a Dane, and he was raised among Danes. As much as he hates the people around him, he also hates himself. Askelad deeply loathes half of who he cannot deny he truly is.

I think Askeladd always hated the danes under his command and saw them as a means to an end but it was Bjorn's unnerring loyalty and belief in him that won over Askeladd's friendship. I think he felt regret for how it ended for Bjorn. Knowing that he betrayed his only friend.

We can love and hate a character at the same time. Askeladd is not a good man. He led a group of thugs to pillage, rape, and mass murder countless innocents. He is a racist man who sees little value in lives of non-Welsh people. But he is also a deeply layered character, who understood his own evil, and saw virtue in Thors as an admirable quality of a king that he could never have himself. And even loved Thorfinn as his own psuedo-son. Legit one of the best written antagonist in all of fictional medium out there.

I think Askeladd meant what he said to Bjorn. Otherwise he wouldn't have reacted by apologizing for not giving him an inistant death when he failed to hit a vital organ, since he clearly didn't want his friend who was already dying of an infected wound to have an even more needlessly painful death.

I think askeladd meant it when he called Bjorn his only friend. He knew not trust the rest of his men with Canute, but he trusted Bjorn and Thorfinn to protect him. It’s crazy to think about how far characters come in this series. Bjorn was the last character I’d expect to be emotional about watching die, and I never thought I’d root for askeladd. But here I am…

I'll fight anyone who says Askeladd was lying here. Like, bruh, he visits Bjorn when he's sick, he granted him the favor of dying in battle, you can even sense the panic when he missed the vital spot (someone like Askeladd wouldn't miss/hesitate if he wasn't shaken), then afterwards he covers Bjorn with his own cloak, then acts very seemingly off as noted by Thorfinn, also seemingly off at us since he suddenly opens up about his past etc (I'd call it a "mask off" moment for he seems to completely drop that usual unbothered facade of his), then carries Bjorn's body away. Some people say "he doesn't care and only did this to grant Bjorn some comfort". That's a contradiction ffs! He cared enough to try and make Bjorn's last moments as comfortable as possible. There's nothing to gain from "acting friendly" at this point. So even if he hadn't actually considered Bjorn a friend before, he most definitely didn't hate him. Who knows, Askeladd himself might have just then realized that Bjorn actually was a friend to him.

People who enjoyed Thorfinn in S1 more than S2 have to understand that Thorfinn is a child whose only survival mechanism was his lust for revenge and honour for Thor's death. Thorfinn is a hollow person at this point of time. One that has so much trauma being shoved away, and he'll have to deal with them later on.

I think its clear he liked Bjorn he simply didnt want to admit it. He didnt need to VISIT him when he was injured, he missed his vital spot meaning he was nervous and then he PANICKED because he saw him suffer... when Askeladd has ever show concern like this? He proceed to be upset as fuck while dueling Thorfinn... against he never loose his cool but after killing Bjorn he stopped playing around. Plus he covered Bjorn up with his coat (totally unnecessary if he hated him) and decided to take the body to bury him himself instead of leaving him there or letting someone else do it. I mean...he can lie to himself all he wants but his actions shows he cared about Bjorn
