The most frustrating thing is that none of this is necessary. There's no reason for a cost of living crisis, there's no reason to have food banks/other charities, or rent increases, or interest rate increases. There's no material reason the government can't just provide everyone with food, housing, clothes, household utilities, etc. We have the resources, but the majority of people are being actively deprived of these resources. Our leaders are just sadists. They know damn well how hard things are for the majority of the population, and they love it. The cruelty is the point. Whenever it comes to providing the majority of people with a dignified life the government, at the the behest of the corporations that own it, drags it's feet. When it comes to giving corporate owners even better standards of living, the government rushes to make it happen. Successful athletes, musicians, actors, authors etc also benefit, but it's an ancillary effect. The sole goal of the government is to shower ultra rich corporate owners in even more luxury.

I used live in Brighton, great place! As an artist I had the choice of living on benefits in the UK or moving to Spain because of the cost of living. I still don't earn enough to live in the UK but last year I bought a beautiful 3 bed house outright for the price of a family car and got my irish citizenship so I could dodge brexit. Best thing I ever did. I read the news about the UK with horror and thank my lucky stars I don't have to put up with such a shitshow of a tory government. If there was ever a country that needed jeremy Corbyn, its the UK right now..

Hi Chris, your comment really chimes with my own experience. I am about to turn 45 and was never able to get remotely near the 'property ladder' in the UK (lived in Brighton too). I moved to Portugal in 2020, just before the Brexit deadline, and (fingers crossed) am on the cusp of finding somewhere to buy here. As a landlord, the government now taxes on the turnover, Imagine a car dealership or a restaurant being taxed on the total transactional sale?! Interest rates are even higher on BTL’s along with stringent regulations and unnecessary energy sufficient grades means theres no money and high risk. Now that landlords are selling up…. Rental supply is lower pushing the prices even higher. Many people won’t ever be able to buy and now struggle to rent a house because the government knew that they could tax landlords in one hand yet pay the other private landlords a higher price due to the lack of housing stock. I had a property that should rent for only £750 offering me £1200 to immigrants because they have no housing for them. When the tenants damage the property, the council encourage them to stay in as long as possible until the eviction process begins which took my friend 4 months to complete. Ending up paying the immigrant tenants £1000 to leave and the council are now stuck trying to find them a home again whilst shafting the landlord that helped the council.

I believe they should implement PR (better than current!), however "plurality governance" can happen in PR and does. Such as in other countries where a coalition is forced, based around the highest vote (be it 20% even!) and calling the shots, by whatever means (perhaps through the presidential head of state). Plus the impact of something undemocratic happening: whether parties want to be in coalition as determining power in government! The impact of such things can be displayed in no less historical example than the Nazi party and the end of the Weimar Republic (one could even debate that this power seizure wouldn't have happened under FPTP but not sure myself) There are more systems on top of this that could help and one is DIRECT DEMOCRACY which gives rise to less individual slander. Any polling on policies we do seems to be entirely unreflective of the voting intention based on manifestos. Seems like some form of it could be necessary.

I’ll be honest. I lived in Brighton for many years and it’s not the best place to go and speak to people about the cost of living crisis. The place is a lovely bubble, but it’s a mega echo chamber.

Some of my family have property they rent out and because they are decent landlords they, in the main, attract responsible tenants. Tenants who pay their rent on time (or at all), and look after their property are to be cherished. If something then happens (like a cost of living crisis) that affects such a positive relationship, the landlord and tenant/s can then work it out together. If everyone is reasonable, they can then find some kind of compromise. However, my husband and I rented property in the past and, again, have had some great landlords, but most of them were horendous. Not doing basic maintenance on their property, inspecting without giving notice and finding excuses not to return the better part of our deposit. When you are poor and deperate to find somewhere to live, you are at the mercy of such people, unfortunately.

A simple thing that the government could do is to drop VAT on the few items (Fuel, energy and some food commodities) that are actually causing this inflation, as these items compound the issue across other sectors driving up inflation. They MPs should not have second jobs, being an MP should be a 40-hour-a-week job and reserved for those that actually care for the country vs lining their pockets. Finally, a wealth Tax is needed to reduce the massive growth the super-rich are achieving off the back of everyday workers.

I've lived in Brighton for 26 years. I have a complaint about this video. Not a single one of the people that you interviewed complained about the cost of THEIR rent. I know so many people that are being priced out of their homes because of inflation, so the landlord puts up the rent "accordingly". This could mean one of two things, either their mortgage has gone up, OR they know they can get a higher price by kicking existing tenants out to replace them with higher paying ones. In job terms, this would be constructive dismissal which a lot of companies have paid out for in the past due to being found guilty. Is there such a law against private landlords? No. The simple answer is no. So they get away with it as at the end of a tenancy they don't need to give a reason why they won't renew it. I was homeless for a time because of exactly this. You interviewed some very "lucky" people on ONE street, Gardner Street, right? They still had something to complain about, but not as much as a good 90% of the people I know. Also, why did you hire actors? The guy at 4:12 with the blue gloves is either an awful actor or someone who isn't very good at lying. Body language is key here, when you tell someone something you generally look at them, he can't keep his eyes on the interviewer for more than a couple of seconds. And when he says something he's not comfortable with, he looks away completely to the right. Watch this again and you'll see it. Dead giveaway. Also a lot of people that you interviewed do not sound lie they're from Brighton at all, or at least have not lived here long. I'm all for journalism, but when you restrict yourself to interview people on ONE street with relatively high end independent shops, you're restricting the information you pass on. Remember, the government has never been sorry when the rest of the public didn't now about it. I challenge PoliticsJOE to come to Brighton again and I'll introduce you to some REAL people, who actually have something to say.

Cost living is hard but no ones starving in the uk. Its just our lifestyle cant be maintained. We are in contracts for phone, netflix wifi ect that we cant leave when money is tight. Nurses start on approx 30,000, that isnt low wages. Its the people on minimum wage that are hit the hardest. They dont get any benefit to support them. Older Women spoke about pubs and resturants. If your broke, dont go!

To the comments about France..Costs of Electricity, gas and food in France is, and has been, for many years, higher than in the UK. Also French subsidies come at a higher price, in that one pays higher tax than in the UK.

@Don Doodat Gas and Electricity are tied to France so the costs are the same. The local big supermarket in Monaco is Carrefour (which I believe is the biggest chain in Europe) and the food prices are the same as in France.

Excluding world events like Covid which we can do very little about. EXTREME BREXIT AND EXTREMIST FAR RIGHT UK GOVERNMENTS have contributed to a major crash of the British economy. As an example Brexit negatively affected the value of the Pound against the Dollar which affected the cost of buying oil gas on the open market. This fed through to the cost of everything in the UK. Then Brexit negatively affected the value of the Pound against the Euro. The EU is where we get a majority of our food imports from so this has contributed food price inflation in UK in a major way.
