Im English and i absolutely love America. Spent time there and I've love every minute of it. The place and the people. I broke down on a dark road one night in Florida and 2 cars stopped to ask if i need help. Americans are some of the friendliest in the world.

People forget the US is an empire with 50 state governments and a massive federal government. There are massive variances within the US and not all is the same. Europeans don’t seem to understand that (usually).

Probably because of how close you are to your family being recent immigrants. The last immigrant to this country in my family was pre-WWI. Most of my ancestry was from Colonization around 300 years ago. Although I have some curiosity about Europe (mostly old Europe), I feel zero affinity for it. Whatever linked us to it is long gone.

As an American, I feel that The Netherlands does not get enough attention, whereas Germany, England, Italy, France, and Spain get all of the attention. I am lucky to have been to Europe three times (Eastern Europe where my dad is from). Each time I landed in Amsterdam and it was such a beautiful sight to see land after flying over the Atlantic Ocean for six hours. The Schiphol Airport in Amsterdam was really nice, I really wanted to explore the country. Hopefully one day I will.

I don’t want to nitpick at this but I’m also from Eastern Europe and it struck me when Richard was asked about integration of migrants and he said it depends where they come from and if they are from the US or Western Europe then no problem so he specifically left Eastern Europe out in the context where he was referring to a certain cultural affinity. I found that strange.

As a 10 year old I was told that my family was moving to Harlem! This was in the 60’s. I went to the library to do my research. ☺️ To my surprise the only book available was about Haarlem! So being a kid I naturally thought that there would be a lot of similarities. Windmills, dikes, etc.. What a surprise once we did move…… it nothing like the book but still a whole new world of cultural diversities that amazed me! 😂

Due to Rohingya is ally with Allies versus Axis powers during WWII. America should took or bring all of Rohingya to America. This is America responsibility not their nearest countries. Traveling with Kristin as America you should not ignore this problem. Why you not travel to Rakhine state?

I’m British and I have been to Amsterdam a lot and love the place. Everyone speaks English, the city is overflowing with culture, the parks are beautiful, the architecture is beautiful, as are the canals. Probably best to visit in the spring or summer, but winter can be beautiful too. Words of warning:- Don’t walk in the cycle lanes, the Dutch love their bikes. Definitely NEVER open your car door into a cycle lane or turn across a cycle lane without giving way to cyclists.. The scariest thing I have come across there is the pickled herring, I have never tried it but just the look of it makes me shudder. The coffeeshops (cafes where you can buy and smoke weed and eat edibles) are fantastic, but never take photos there unless you have permission from the staff. It’s good manners to buy a drink when you are there too. Coffeeshops do not sell alcohol, but you won’t need any! Don’t smoke weed in the streets as it is technically illegal. The first time I went there I smoked a joint outside Amsterdam Centraal station before I was about to leave and I was surrounded by cops within seconds. Amsterdam has a massive airport and excellent travel connections. There is even a train to London! If you have not tried a stroopwaffel you have not lived.

Kristin, when I occasionally catch your videos I always enjoy them, you dive just a little deeper into attributes of a country, not merely brush on the sites of a country surficially. I just returned from 8 days in The Netherlands, I was there during Thanksgiving week with my children, showing the country to them. I am US born (with Dutch immigrant parents) but I grew up and was educated in The Netherlands from age 6 to age 22. I've spent my adult life in The US and this trip was my first time return (in 40 years). What struck me about Holland is that, as I saw it, in 40 years fundamentally very little has changed. There's been a lot of progress but the core culture is the same. I was surprised in Amsterdam by the fact that English seems to be the language, I heard it everywhere around me, spoken by Dutch people as well. I got the feeling that Dutch people not merely know the English language but that it's what they predominantly speak when they are around and about. I speak fluently Dutch, I just at times miss a word which Dutch people take as an immediate sign to continue in English. Stopping at shops to get a cup of coffee, I found multiple times that the store clerk, an Australian, British or otherwise foreign person in Holland to try to attend University or just back pack traveling and working their way through, did not speak Dutch. So they are people working in Holland in retail and don't speak Dutch. That was eye opening for me. Being conservative the progressive socialist nature of politics in several western European countries frightens me but that is politics. In living their daily lives Dutch people are more guided or driven by their culture or civilization than they are by politics plus The Netherlands is one of those western European countries where socialism, for reasons, does work well. My take away is that The Netherlands is an extremely well functioning country and society and for the most part always has been. Living life in Holland is extraordinary good. My opinion about The US is that for reasons of (1) its sheer size (2) its, sort of, position of dominance in the world (3) its dynamic nature and (4) its culture towards business is the country of greatest opportunity in the world, BUT The US has lost its own ways. Politics in The US is so corrupt that it's rendered dysfunctional, culturally and socially we are broken. US families (whatever the perception of family is) is unable to produce a next generation that are better people than the prior generation. US education produces incompetency both in career term and social terms. For one side of the ideology politics IS people's religion, creating insane division, to the point that people can't even hold conversations with one another, people just anger each other. Work and a search for prosperity completely overshadows any core humane values that people may still have. And Americans are in complete denial. In denial over the state of their healthcare provision systems, the education, crime levels, diminishing of a middle class, drug problems, housing, morals and a host of other issues.

Oh we're not in denial -the U.S. is not a perfect country by any means and there are so many things that need to be changed. I'm afraid there are no easy answers or solutions.

As a Brazilian I would never imagine years ago that I'd see somes cities in US as dangerous as some cities in Brazil. I've seen stores in US with lockers in their shelves and products which is something not seen in any dangerous favela in Brazil. Mass robbery is rare in Brazil but it happens very often in the US. Not even in Africa mass robbery or locked shelves are seen. Drug abuse in the US has been beyond imagination too and the videos from Philadelphia have spread worldwide.

When I was younger we all thought that the US was the future, not so much so nowadays.

Australian here: I've had 5 trips to Vietnam and I've also been to Cambodia and Myanmar. Vietnam is absolutely fantastic. From one trip to the next over around 15 years there have been so many positive changes to observe. It may be 'communist' in the sense of being a one political party state, but in every other way it is firmly capitalistic right down to the lowest street vendor. I love the people I've met there and surprisingly, nobody seems to bear any animosity towards the US over what they call 'The American War', however the French are not liked at all after 100 years of brutal colonialism. Do visit east Asia, you'll love it.

Kristin, I loved your video (as I do your other ones)! It was interesting to learn about how individuals in The Netherlands perceived U.S. culture, etc. I love that Dutch society has a "safety net". I am currently visiting Barcelona, Spain and notice the "collective", "safety-net" feeling here. I love it. I am curious, Kristin, and I know this is a personal question... Would you return to the U.S. for 100% of the year or do you like the "hybrid-split" that you have? It seems like you have an exciting life! Sanjay

The safety-net feeling is all across Europe I think, especially concerning healthcare costs. I’m Dutch and my husband had a severe accident in Spain a few years ago that involved an ambulance, hospital stay of a week, an operation and several x-rays and medicines. One phone call to our very basic insurence company settled it all. Never seen a bill for anything. Not that I was surprised, but if I imagine something like that happen to him in the US I’m very glad to be living in Europe. Freedom is also not to have to worry about medical costs, which is especially great when you find yourself in such an unfortunate situation.

They are like "why???" even my husband, who is Italian. lol. so funny. but to be fair Italy does have the highest unemployment rate and lowest salary in all of EU, so its fair they looked at me strangely

I've been to Europe 4 times, starting at age 10, and have lived there for over three years of my life. Western Europe is exceptional to the U.S. in terms of healthcare, public safety, a great social safety net, food prices, a wide range of cultures, historic architecture/beautiful cities, and the majority of the people having an open heart. I am trying to retire in Europe.

Great vid friend. We went to Switzerland in 2019 and I was mailing off post cards to our grandma. I got into a conversation with a local about the US (again this was 2019) and they had nothing good to say about the US. They only wanted to visiting Walt Disney world and that’s it 🤦🏼‍♂️🤷‍♂️

When I was a child I always dreamed of one day living in the US, I thought that the US was the best place in the world and I couldn't wait to live there, but as a grew up and learned more about the "details" that dream became less and less, then I moved to the Netherlands when I was 18 and spent some time here and learned more things about the US and learned things about the Netherlands and the EU, the dream to live in the US died. From the obvious things like, politics, religion, race relations, healthcare and education to the non obvious things like, what people are paid, what is expected of them from an employer (don't take sick days, don't take vacation days.), the way cities are built, policing, lack of options if not using a car, ISP monopolies, ISP terms, price for internet/tv/phone, how political leaders are chosen, school boards, HOAs and many other things I could mention if I thought about more. Even if I was to become rich, which is one of the few things that the US is better at doing than other countries and I would have the money to avoid most of the issues I brought up, even then I wouldn't want to live in the US. American people in general are perfectly fine, I actually have a bunch of great American friends. The system on the other hand is far from perfect and has some pretty basic faults.

The US is super safe except in a few small bad neighborhoods, meaning ones with black youths and drugs. The US pays more than all of Europe in income. It is an individualistic society. This makes to just leave Europe is the dust In technology and innovation. You also have to learn that Europe would be in constant war as many places in the world without the US. The US makes trade possible even for its detractors like Russia, Chins, Iran etc. They also could not trade without protection from the US. Russia could not pump oil without the US. It also has huge burdens that Europe does not have. Like millions and millions of illegal aliens. In Europe they freak out with a few thousand illegals coming in. And the obvious Europe is white which means far less crime and higher IQs. I love Europe but I also know it couldn’t exist without the US.

Cool. Could you talk your American friends into leaving the US? Especially if they are city folk. Tell them how awesome the Netherlands is. We have a lot of pinheads in America that are intentionally destroying it. I think they would be a perfect fit for Europe. And with them gone, we can rebuild our country.

I stopped in Amsterdam in 2001 it was expensive then. I arrived by the morning train and couldn’t find a hostel as all hostels were sold out and all hotels were over $100.00 then. So I took the night train out.

Love the look on your face when you said "Yeah, we really don't have much of a support system there..." And yet, many Americans feel we give too many social services for free and maybe for people they feel don't deserve it. In my observation, Europeans may be taxed more but they have stronger social services available, and in Asia people rely on their local community for support and less on their government.

I have dreams to move and study in the UK. So I'm much like you. I'm a geographer at heart; I've always wanted to explore and study other cultures, adapt to them. But I think the main thing to travel back to the US for would be the landmarks. There are so many beautiful national parks to see in the country. But other than that, the infrastructure in this country is in slow decay, whereas I think I would spend a life around London.

Wow, that first lady could speak English very well for her age. People didn't always speak English well in The Netherlands. Most Dutch of her age speak it rather badly with a terrible accent. But from the 1970s on till today, English at school was taught in much better ways more and more. For instance, my English teacher commented back then to us that his generation never practiced English conversation in class. They just read a lot of English books.

I love what Richard said about Asia versus Europe. 100% true! I lived 6 years in Malaysia and 6 years in Germany, I can tell it's not the money, it's what people want. Asians want to change, try new things and improve, unlike Germans that actually hate the change.
