Seeing a lot of commenters feeling discouraged, just know that the two main schools these students went to (UC Berkeley and USC) are probably a big part of why they are in such incredible internships. If you aren't going to a school of this caliber, you just have to face the facts that you'll have to work harder to get to this same place. I think the reality of it is that most people will not be able to get this level of internship BUT once you're a few years into your career the gap between you and these people will narrow considerably and you can start competing with them more easily.

If anyone is feeling discouraged, here is a reality check: California is generally an expensive place to live so to balance the living costs, the pay is generally higher. Also, UC Berkley tuition must be ground-breakingly expensive! Moral: row your own boat and steer the direction you wanna go. That’s what these students are doing and they see the benefits of it!!

UC Berkeley tuition + all associated fees sum up to about $16k/year (excludes living costs like rent and food) for in-state residents. About 2/3 students get some sort of financial aid, from a few hundred in scholarship to full ride (not uncommon). Plus, there is EBT program available for students to get all groceries paid for by the state.

1:32 this guy and I are pretty similar. I'm a senior Mechanical Engineering student and I just self-taught myself Python at the very beginning of the year. I landed an internship at a startup and they wanted me to either work in controls or data science. Turns out, the data science team had a lot more work and they decided to keep me for the fall semester as well for more data work! Some Majors reasons 1. Some states are more expensive to live in, so salary tends to be a bit higher, not staggering but a little bit more 2. Most Interns work the summer only, with just a few excpetions, so the pay rate is adjusted for about three to 4 months ish, instead of a full year 3. Computer science is in high demand and alot of the work they do is in high demand, so paying alot of benefits and perks comes with that demand 4. It is a field that is growing and growing in diffrent ways, you have to keep ya self updated on everything, its a field that is changing quickly, you cant just practice and perfect one thing. You have to be a multi tasker, capable of doing multiple complex and rigiourus tasks at once

I don’t really know a lot about Python right now, but I’m trying. The other classes for the next years are a JavaScript and cyber security class and I’m planning on taking those classes along with a video game design class in my senior year of high school next year. 😅. Well, if you get into big tech, it'd be $100/hr ish to start and top out at $200/hr, beyond that it's just really unlikely, part genius and part right place right company right time. Salary doesn't really climb dramatically with experience like it does for most professions. Of course I have no clue on your financial situation, so I can't speak specifically on your risk profile and circumstances, but big tech is known to age discriminate. Someone in his 30s would be looked at unkindly by many companies. This is just an obstacle though, not something insurmountable, but it is a significant risk. Best of luck!
