i feel like routesetting is the thing every climber thinks they could do, yet every time they watch someone do it, realise just how hard it is
@seaoc65787 ай бұрын
As someone who's been route setting at a small gym for about four years now, that's so, so, so true. I really didn't think it'd be that hard, but there's so much to consider and I've learned I love it nearly as much and sometimes more than climbing itself. It's so fulfilling seeing someone struggle through and then top out on a project that you set for them that they enjoyed. That's the part I've always loved most, as well as the puzzle aspect of creating it.
@chaozzah7 ай бұрын
@@seaoc6578 I don't really feel like it's hard per se, but as you can clearly see in this video, experience matters a lot for efficiency and speed. They eventually made a fun boulder (though not in grade range, fun is more important than grade) by just thinking of "what would be a fun next move" from the body position. But, they had to do it every single time. And they misjudged how good/bad holds were on the wall, adding even more time. He would've put it up in under an hour I think, and proper, not rushed. I'm a "volunteer" setter at my gym as well, also four years, and just helped 2-3 new people get started. Our gym is top rope only, 8-15m walls, ancient holds (still massive, heavy!). I put in a route in the longest, steepest overhang, and in the same time they put a simpler one on the 8m vert. I had one maybe foothold (too good) that I didn't end up changing, they had 3-4. Not because the moves weren't fun, but they were just too hard for the rest of the route. So they did great! It just took them a lot longer, just like here :)

This feels very much like a spectacle vs. technical style battle. The pink looks better but the yellow seems better set.
@jonaskarlsson59017 ай бұрын
erm what's the difference between "seems better set" and "looks better"?
@eadelindizon95147 ай бұрын
@@jonaskarlsson5901 i would imagine 'looks better' refers to the appearance, whereas 'seems better set' means while it's definitely not the most eye-catching when your eyes look across all the walls in the gym, more things were considered in the process of setting it, like technique, foothold placement, handhold positioning to force certain moves.. stuff like that.

I feel like the fact that only 1 person topped pink (with quite a bit of try hard) while many people topped yellow says something about them being on grade :P
@maddhamstr7 ай бұрын
As a routesetter i believe that most of the intermediate climbers have really strong fingers compared to the grade they usually climb. Poor technique and strong fingers - thats why its easier for them to climb a crimp ladder
@Fallenangel_854 ай бұрын
@@maddhamstr You say that, but that pink thing forces you to catch a reachy sloper one handed, with barely any foot support or non. The yellow had actual feet and was doable with minimal strength + good technique. The pink one is more a V5/6 or worse for smaller climbers.
@mikeroberts8177 ай бұрын
Surely the yellow boulder wins by virtue of actually seeming to be around v4? Only one person tops the pink boulder and they appear to be a very strong climber and as tall as Josh...

I totally agree. The worst boulders are those that miss the grading mark a lot, just makes the people trying them feel like shit.

I remember it being fun to set boulders at my old gym. It was not a commercial gym so we did not have any paid routesetters, so the members had to build everything instead. You could really see the personality and style depending on the setter. Really pushing things to their own personal limit

I can already say in the first 10 seconds that I wold like the bigger holds better. It doesn't matter how well a crimpy boulder is set, there's just something visceral about huge hold.
@muffinfan26527 ай бұрын
I had the exact opposite thought lol. Big holds are so hard to hold onto for my hands. It is probably an issue of muscle strength. It would be interesting to know why that is exactly so I could train for it. Interestingly half of my friends prefer the crimps, the other half prefer the bigger holds. It's so intriguing how divided the climbing community is on this. I love it.

Yes - by sheer visual appeal, the results are no surprise BUT.......from a business perspective the equation is little more complex - it took two people far more than twice the time and exponentially more material resources to produce a product that wasn't even twice as popular. The pink problem may have won the short term contest but it's an unsustainable model for commercial success. My vote (as an industry professional) is for Josh's problem (no contest).
