I just graduated from law school and attended Washington U in St. Louis for my undergrad. It is so interesting seeing all of these people a few years behind me talk about stats, scores, and extracurriculars. Yale and other elite schools can really and truly set you up for life. But just remember, if your scores aren’t this amazing or you don’t get into your dream school, you still have a wonderful life ahead of you. I’ve taken classes at community college, public universities and private universities, and your education really is what you make of it. College is only a few years out of the rest of your life, and I wish in high school I had known that and spent more time making memories and less time worried about my GPA. Just my two cents, and amazing that all of these students are so accomplished at such young ages!

I like watching these videos cuz they do be inspiring me to continue my college education. In highscool I was a 2.0 gpa student. Barely putting the effort to muster a C. My only way getting into college was soccer but eventually I quit due to mental health. I was really depressed and didn’t have any motivation for anything. Had no friends no job and overall I was in a bad state in hs. I just turned 20 now back in community college trying to get a degree eventually gonna transfer. But yeah would’ve wished i had better guidance and wished I could go back and change that so I wouldn’t have made it harder on myself. I didn’t even go to prom no football game nothing and overall had no social life. Starting to change now How I am now and it’s honestly making me a better person and happier. Seeing you guys so happy at Yale is motivation and brings me joy. You guys are very smart and I also admire your hard work you put in and the sacrifice.

Some guidance - unless universities in your area require you to go to a community college and then transfer your credits, I honestly suggest just going straight to a university 4-year degree program. I have a bachelor’s, master’s, and credits towards a PhD and my biggest mistake and waste of time in my academic career was ever attending a community college. They are money hogs. I’ll never forget when s community college took half of my financial aid and automatically applied it to their college bookstore as credit. Ridiculous.

As fun as these videos are, I do want to give a certain amount of warning to HS students. Just because you have the grades, scores, letters of rec, essays, and extracurriculars doesn’t mean you’ll be accepted into these schools. I was denied to all of my colleges despite having a 3.8/4.23, a 1490, and being on a nationally recognised robotics and rocketry team. I even did robotics research in HS at a university, applied to the university, and then was denied from that university. So much of it is just an arbitrary lottery, it’s hard to truly know.
@mg1699

Damn... university entrance in the US is crazy. In Australia we all finish year 12 with an ATAR score (Australian Tertiary Admission Rank) and uni offers go out based on your ATAR, that's it, that's the process. You don't need to do extra curriculars, write essays, have recomendations etc. Degrees in things like Music Theatre or Visual Art will have an Audition or portfolio to show you have the relevant skill. But degrees in education, science, law etc etc etc it's all just your ATAR score, even at the top unis. So glad we don't have to go through this added craziness.

Yep, it gets more and more competitive. You think you are top dog in high school, wait till you get into top college. You think are top college student, wait until med school. Think you are top student in med school, wait until residency. Think you are top resident, wait until fellowship, etc... The exams are never-ending. It don't mean nothing even if you get top 1% percentile in your USMLEs (basically near flawless exam). Been there done that. Its all about how you live your life and how you treat others, thats whats most important.

I was in Key Club as membership chair, A class monitor, Student mentor, Debate club, chess club, Spanish club, business club and let's just say I helped in other clubs as well as cheerleading and I was in all sciences and advanced classes.

I had a 3.2 average in high school, mainly due to boredom. My ACT score was 35. Never bothered to apply to Yale, but wish they would understand that GPA doesn't tell the whole story. If your test scores are high, that's more telling. I'm also shocked how very few extracurriculers they had.

I totally get what you mean; but my mentor is a retired college admissions officer and I asked him this same thing once before, he told me that its more telling what your entire high school career is rather than just one test. If you don’t try for 4 years but do for one test that’s not what most colleges want in students, they want people who can reliably stay structured long term not just abruptly. Its more telling on your work ethic rather than just testing intelligence.

I live in Canada and I thought this video was really interesting. However, I think the SAT scores are pretty pointless, for us (depends on the province i think), to get into a really good university you needed above a certain average + at least 70% or over in English. I should have applied to American universities just to see which ones I could get in xD.

Mine was 840, but I didn’t study. I am an slow student when it comes to testing, I always be the last. The SAT is the opposite of me. I just get to do like 20 questions and randomly mark the others because of time. Just if I could remember every lesson I took through out math considering I am an (A) math student. Khan Academy just doesn’t work for me. Is like they give you: (583-865)/9cos-(788-993) and as an explanation vídeo: 1+1=2 And then I be like: damn I remember I did all this and broke it with As, but I can’t remember how to do it. For reading section, I have always had an slow understanding when reading, and yea you just have to read to get better, but I am a mess when it comes to reading Hmmm. what if I secuestrate my math teacher
