I loved Modo as it was my first 3D animation program. It was perpetual although I would purchase updates at 701, 801, 901… but the day they went to a subscription model was the day I first downloaded Blender. I pay a lot more to support Blender than any other software but I know that if something bad happens, Blender will still be there. Imagine being plumber and when you are in a tough situation (which happens to everyone at some point) all of your tools suddenly disappear.

Look at the price, no way! No wonder this is happening. That subscription model sucks! I switched recently to 3DCoat, the price is very reasonable and they offer lots of plans, even "rent to own". What companies such as Adobe, Autodesk, and Foundry have in common? They suck their clients, acquire things, and kill those things. Happened with Softimage, Mischief, and now Modo. Those people who run the businesses really suck at this. Shameful.
@rakeshmalik538524 күн бұрын
The most reasonable theory I've heard for Clarisse's demise is Solaris. And Katana -- which I'm finding is another VFX industry mainstay; there are quite a few VFX houses in Vancouver that use Katana for lighting + rendering. There are however some that are adopting Solaris, and an ILM rep told me that ILM is migrating to Houdini. Isotropix was working an enterprise level node-based scene building + rendering system just before it vanished. I learned shortly thereafter from a VFX artist that one of the bigger Isotropix clients had recently made the switch from Clarisse to Solaris, both because Solaris did the same thing but within the unlimited power of the Houdini environment, but also with the flexibility of Hydra. Throw Redshift on top of Hydra and you have the speed of Clarisse but inside Solaris (or Katana), but you can also switch out to Arnold for things that Redshift doesn't do well, which isn't possible Clarisse. Ergo, RIP Clarisse. Hence the theory that Solaris and Katana killed Clarisse.

Actually, I was using Mari for a long time, but I switched recently to 3DCoat. It's really awesome! Mari optimization just stopped to evolve, always laggy. They focus too much on managerial aspects and forget usability. Till today, I don't get why they created a node system in Mari. And I love composite with nodes, but with a 3D painting software, it seems totally inadequate. I never considered SBP, Adobe crappy subscription model, no way. That's why 3DCoat was a great choice for me: a permanent license with affordable prices.

I'm also wondering if the new LightWave will be able to carve out a new niche under its new company, because Modo is competing with Maya and Houdini... but at the same time, even Cinema4D has barely managed to make a dent in the VFX industry, and that didn't have to go through the NewTek -> Luxology kerfuffle. with Modo dead there is no good sleek, easy to learn, elegant, powerful poly modelling software out there. And no, Blender is not it.
@HiredGunGames24 күн бұрын
I agree. Allowing this software to be open source would greatly increase its value. 3rd party devs would make plugins and kits to grow the softwares existence and manageable license terms could ensure a steady profit margin from the software… it’s better than being completely dead… blender was dead for a few years until their massive reinventing and allowing more people to develope tools the community needed. As it stands now, no one is willing to pay thousands of dollars to create tools they need. They’d rather pay nothing for the software and then a small fee to sell plugins for the software. Greed can only get you so far in today’s economy. It’s unfortunate that modo came to this conclusion as their software really was the best for hard surface but in todays market with ai people need more than that. They needed better curve modeling tools and control over curves and guides. They needed a faster updated renderer. Animation tools. Hell if foundry ever found themselves wondering what to do next, look at where people are struggling the most… it’s be great to finally have a tool for creating full game ready hair. Focus on curve tools and guide tools and such.
