Mr. Carter, Thank You for taking what could otherwise be a confusing project and make it easy. Thanks to you I installed my first-ever four-way switch today and it worked perfectly the first attempt! No small feat for me! Particularly what you explained starting at 3:41 (about the most common mistake people make when trying to wire a four-way switch) was the most helpful to me. It's easy to see why people would make that mistake and, thanks to you I did not! Your efforts in educating us was time well spent, my good Sir! Again I say "Thank You!"

This really helped! My house had the 4-way, I removed it a decade ago and put in X-10 remotes and wanted to switch it back to 4-way (so I could use florescents) but couldn't figure it out. The videos on how wire a 3 way switch and the one on how to wire a 4 way switch helped me fix a 4 way switch problem we had since moving into our house 4 1/2 yrs ago. We were only able to turn on the lights from the switch where they were last turned off at. You can imagine the frustration of going from switch to switch to get the lights to go on. Your tip that many failures are because the two wires from switch 1 need to be attached to the brass screws on the 4 way was the key. Thanks !!

Thanks for the video! I have been struggling with a 4-way setup in my play-room (converted garage) for several years. During a resent remodel I decided to trouble shoot the switches and found your video. At 3:40 you mention that the wires from box 1 need to both go to brass screws. That was exactly my problem; I had one to black, and one to brass. Your video solved my problem and now I have three working switches!

@AsktheBuilder I think what Feuerwehr03 means is that you could use a 4-way switch 'in place of' a 3-way switch at either end. You would only use 3 screws on the 4-way switch (2 like color screws for the travelers, and the third as the common). In this configuration, it would function the same as a 3-way switch (SPDT),. You would STILL need a 4-way switch between the two end switches though. In any case, this is one of the clearest tutorials on 4-way circuits I've seen on KZbin. Great job!

Thank you very much. We have been living in a poorly wired house for years. And once the switches started to break (from age) I embarked on the task of fixing past mistakes. I followed the previous wiring installation (seems logical) and yet could get the circuit to work. I watched two of your videos, three-way and four-way switch installation, and voila! I have a working 4 way circuit that controls the lights in my lanai from three different rooms. You video was clear and concise and within minutes is was able to identify the wiring errors, fix them, and get the whole mess working as it was designed. Thank you, thank you, thank you.

That's crazy ... so when you say 120 volt can kill you is that if you yourself is grounded as well thus completing the circuit and making the person not able to let go ? Yeah I cut a number 10 wire that was still hot and totally put a hole in my line man's and it made a huge arc luckily I looked away and it was far away from me . That totally taught me a lesson and put me on the edge when working with stuff I do not know is dead or not. Tic testers are a very useful tool .

Tim, this is very cool...I did it with your 3-way video and now the 4 way video, thank you! I do have an issue with one of my combinations. I did this in my hallway, and it works beautiful. 2 - 3 ways and 1 - 4 way. Then I did it in a bedroom, and the switches work as long as I have the 1st 3-way switch in a up position. I verified that the 4-way switch in-between has the same conductors from 12/3g from 1st 3-way switch and they are mounted to the brass screws on the 4-way switch. The 3-way Switch # 2- & 4-way switch in the middle work great but if I turn off 1st 3-way switch, the rest do not work. I don't know if it matters or not but I am running 3-way switch # 2 up to a ceiling fan for the light use. I have the fan motor on a dedicated single pole switch. Thanks for the great info!

We have a newer home with led lighting that supports dimmer switches but the builder would not install them. We took the task on ourselves and as part of the project we had to replace the standard switches with larger flat ones to match the new dimmer switch. Well one of the switches is a 4 way with two other hallway 3 way switches. I could not figure out what was going on since it seemed no matter what one switch would not work or would lock the other two out. I was about to throw in the towel and call an electrician when I came across this video. My issue was that I had crossed wires between the black and brass screws. Once I fixed this mistake everything worked as expected. Greatly appreciated this concise but easy to follow video!

As an electrical inspector for our town, we use the NEC 2008 codes. Basically the metal box has to have a lead from it into the machine ground at some point. If it's connected with EMT all the way to the breaker box and then it's bonded into the grounding/neutral lug, that's fine. If there's a screw with a copper wire to the machine ground connector on the switch, that's fine too.

@jasonbiddulph Thanks for your comment. This video was taped for instruction in the USA. I'm flummoxed though. I went to your channel and couldn't locate a video there showing us all the things you mentioned in your comment. Why is that? Why don't you have a video there about this topic showing us what you know and your methods?

Tim this looks like an ideal installation you know as well as I do switches are rarely laid out this way. You'll usually need to run 4 conductor NM cable and provide a j-box for splicing.

i enjoy all your videos i just thought the wires have to be stapled 12 inches above the box to pass inspection? not a big deal thanks for all the help you've given out

Thanks. I could have been clearer. You can wire these switches several ways. My job in this video was to show one. My suggestion to you was to take your knowledge and turn it into the other ways to wire it. I still maintain you should do this, especially since you say you have the certification. Make hundreds of electrical videos to share what you know.

I owe you.....thanks a bunch...…. You made me look like an electrical genius!! A 4-way in my house was making poor contact - worn out and wife complaining. I replaced switch and noticed it wasn't working quite right. It was originally wired like you said NOT to do it (honestly, I had never noticed before, but we don't live upstairs where the switch is), so I simply followed your instructions. Shazaam! Works like it should now!!!

You're welcome. You can send a giant bag of peanut M&Ms to the AsktheBuilder.com world headquarters in my name. You're industrious as evidenced by your success, so with ten minutes work you'll figure out where to send them. I, for one, thank you in advance of their arrival!

Yes. In this video boxes 1 and 3 were not touched. All I did is cut the cable it two between them. Watch this video one more time - maybe twice.
